Jonathan 'Isaac Bickerstaff' Swift
Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin, Ireland on 30 November 1667, second child and only son of Jonathan Swift and Abigaile Erick Swift. His father was dead before Jonathan, Junior was born, so the child's education was arranged by other relatives. Jonathan graduated from Trinity Colege, Dublin, in 1686 and then went to England to try his luck. He found a job as secretary to Sir William Temple, and it was in Sir William's household that he met Esther (Stella) Johnson and became her tutor. Now Sir William was an extremely important statesman of the day. He helped arrange the marriage of future British monarchs William and Mary Anyway, Jonathan wrote a lot of stuff in between tutoring sessions, but unfortunately burned most of it. The writing that survives shows signs of the great satirist he was to become. But when Sir William died in 1699, Jonathan was left scrambling for a job and eventually ended up with several odd little Church positions back in Ireland . He became a very fashionable satiric writer as far as Dublin society was concerned And now for one of my all-time favorite anecdotes. In the early 1700's, a man named John Partridge, a cobler by trade, took up printing almanacs to make some extra money. He challenged his readers to try their hands at prophecy and see if they could beat Partridge's own prophetic abilities. Well, Partridge had made some attacks on the Church of England, and in 1708, Jonathan decided to stand up for his employer. Using the name Isaac Bickerstaff

Irish author and satirist Jonathan Swift was born November 30, 1667 in Dublin. His father died before Swift's birth, leaving his wife with a baby daughter and unborn son. As a result, Swift was raised by his three uncles. It is believed that Swift felt a sense of insecurity during his childhood because he had no father and his home life was unstable
Swift's uncles took care of Swift's education. At age 6, he was sent to Kilkenny School, considered the best school in Ireland at that time. At 15, Swift entered Trinity College in Dublin. He was not a particularly good student and tended to neglect his studies. Although he received his degree in 1686, it was speciali gratia, meaning "by special favor."
Swift continued his studies at Trinity as a candidate for an advanced degree. However, in 1689 he was forced to move to England because of political unrest. In England, he worked as a secretary to Sir William Temple at Moor Park, Surrey. Temple was a diplomat and writer, who was preparing his memoirs. Although their relationship was often strained, Swift worked for Temple for the next 10 years.
During his employment at Moor Park, Swift was given unlimited access to Temple's vast library, which helped him to grow intellectually. He also met and tutored Esther Johnson, the daughter of Temple's widowed housekeeper. In later writings, Swift referred to Johnson as Stella. His relationship with Stella continues to be one of controversy and speculation. Some say Swift and Stella were secretly married.

Dublin Swift Jonathan Swift Jonathan Swift Jonathan Swift was an Anglo-Irish churchman, political writer, poet and one of the greatest satirists in world literature. Swift was born in Dublin on the 30th of November 1667 and was the second child and only son of Jonathan and Abigaile Erick Swift. Swift's father died before he was born so other relatives arranged his education. In 1673 at the age of six, he began at Kilkenny Grammar School, which was, at the time, the best in Ireland. He then went on to study and graduate in Trinity College Dublin.
"Actually, he didn't, strictly speaking, graduate.
Sometimes they gave diplomas to people who hadn't actually
earned them, just to clear out the place. Jonathan was
one of four students in his 38 member-graduating class
to earn a degree in this manner."
In 1688 William of Orange invaded England, initiating the "Glorious Revolution" in England. With Dublin in political turmoil, Trinity College was closed and Swift ventured to England in search of work. He found a job as secretary to Sir William Temple, and it was in Sir William's household that he met Esther (Stella) Johnson and became her tutor. During his stay there Swift read extensively in Temple's library and began to write in between his tutorial lessons. Most unfortunately he burned most of what he wrote during this time it! The writing that survives shows signs of the great satirist he was to become. In 1692 Temple enabled Swift to receive an M.A. degree from Oxford, and Swift published his first poem. It was during this time that he was very much a Whig both in political theory and in his party attachments. However he was also a devoted churchman. In 1694 he left Temple's household and returned to Ireland to take holy orders. The following year he was ordained a priest in the Church of Ireland, the Irish branch of the Anglican Church.

Irish author and journalist, dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral (Dublin) from 1713, the foremost prose satirist in English language. Swift became insane in his last years, but until his death he was known as Dublin's foremost citizen. Among Swift's best known works is Gulliver's Travels (1726), where the stories of Gulliver's experiences among dwarfs and giants are best known. Swift gave to these journeys an air of authenticity and realism and many contemporary readers believed them to be true. "They look upon fraud as a greater crime than theft, and therefore seldom fail to punish it with death; for they alledge, that care and vigilante, with a very common understanding, may preserve a man's goods from thieves; but honesty hat no fence against superior cunning: and since it is necessary that there should be a perpetual intercourse of buying and selling, and dealing upon credit; where fraud is permitted or connived at, or hath no Law to punish it, the honest dealer is always undone and the knave gets the advantage." (from Gulliver's Travels: 'A Voyage to Lilliput') "As the common forms of good manners were intended for regulating the conduct of those who have weak understandings; so they have been corrupted by the persons for whose use they were contrived. For these people have fallen into a needless and endless way of multiplying ceremonies, which have been extremely troublesome to those who practice them, and insupportable to everyone else: insomuch that wise men are often more uneasy at the over civility of these refiners, than they could possibly be in the conversations of peasants or mechanics."
