D.27 ARTHUR WILLIAM SYMONS PAPERS, 1905-1917 1 box Arthur William Symons (1865-1945), poet, translator, critic and editor, was born at Milford Haven, Cornwall, the son of a Wesleyan Methodist minister. He was educated in various schools in Devonshire until the age of sixteen. His first critical work, An Introduction to the Works of Browning, was published in 1886, and his first book of poems, Days and Nights , was issued in 1889. From this point until his health broke down in 1908, Symons produced a work of poetry, criticism or translation almost every year, as well as contributions to the Athenaeum , the Saturday Review, and the Fortnightly Review . He was in touch with contemporary literary and artistic developments in both England and France during the 1890's and knew W.B. Yeats, Aubrey Beardsley, Paul Verlaine, and Stephane Mallarme. After his breakdown in 1908, Symons suffered a period of mental illness which lasted for two years, and from which he gradually recovered. He continued to write, and his output between 1919-1930 almost matched his first period in quantity. Symons was married in 1901 to Rhoda Bowser, who died in 1936. The collection consists of the typed manuscript with handwritten corrections of the play Tristan and Iseult , published 1917, and the typed manuscript of the book of poetry A Book of Twenty Songs , published 1905.

Decadence: Precious Florals
in the Poetry of Arthur Symons and Theodore Wratislaw
by
Barbara Edwards-Aldrich Just as Henry Thoreau marched to the beat of a different drummer, decadents , whose tastes run counter to prevailing style, prefer uncommon flowers. For example, Des Esseintes, the decadent recluse of Huysmans 's Against Nature , scorns flowers with mass appeal such as roses in favor of exotic flowers that look artificial and require hothouse conditions such as caladiums and anthuriums. Arthur Symons and Theodore Wratislaw, writers of decadent poetry, emulate Des Esseinte's penchant for exotic flowers. This rejection of the ordinary in favor of the uncommon demonstrates a facet of preciousness, "obsession with appearances" and "preoccupation with style" coupled with "an acute aversion to bad taste" (Whissen 17). An examination of "Violet: Prelude" by Symons, and "Orchids" and " Hothouse Flowers " by Wratislaw demonstrates preciousness in the poems. Like Symons, Wratislaw mostly loves the orchid; furthermore, in the sensuous "Orchids" Wratislaw claims the orchid as his uncommon muse. For Wratislaw, like Symons, orchids "Please eyes that long for stranger sweets than prank/Wild meadow blooms and what the garden shows." Wratislaw surrenders his senses to orchids: he watches their curiously wrought petals and synesthically bathes in their "clamorous orchestra of hues" and the "palette of [their] perfumes." Through surrendering his senses to the orchids, the poet seeks mesmerizing sleep and 'weird dreams." Wratislaw hopes that during his orchid-induced dreams "bizarre sweet rhymes shall creep/Forth from [his] brain and slowly form and make/sweet poems. . . ." Thus, the poet compares the orchids to a muse. Wratislaw declares that the orchid-given poems shall be "A shrine of loves that laugh and swoon and ache,/A temple of colored sorrows and perfumed sins!" (Wratislaw 247).

THE BROKEN TRYST by: Arthur Symons
    HAT day a fire was in my blood;
    I could have sung: joy wrapt me round;
    The men I met seemed all so good,
    I scarcely knew I trod the ground.
    How easy seemed all toil! I laughed
    To think that once I hated it.
    The sunlight thrilled like wine, I quaffed
    Delight, divine and infinite.
    The very day was not too long;
    I felt so patient; I could wait,
    Being certain. So, the hours in song
    Chimed out the minutes of my fate.
    For she was coming, she, at last,
    I knew: I knew that bolts and bars
    Could stay her not; my heart throbbed fast,
    I was not more certain of the stars.
    The twilight came, grew deeper; now
    The hour struck, minutes passed, and still
    The passionate fervour of her vow
    Ran in my heart's ear audible.
    I had no doubt at all: I knew
    That she would come, and I was then
    Most certain, while the minutes flew:
    Ah, how I scorned all other men!
    Next moment! Ah! it waswas not!
    I heard the stillness of the street.
    Night came. The stars had not forgot.
    The moonlight fell about my feet.
    So I rebuked my heart, and said:
    "Be still, for she is coming, see

The following is a Gaslight etext.... A message to you about From The symbolist movement in literature
By Arthur Symons
VILLIERS DE L'ISLE-ADAM
A chacun son infini
Descendant of the original Rodolphe le Bel, Seigneur de Villiers (1067), through Jean de Villiers and Maria de l'Isle and their son Pierre the first Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, a Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, born in 1384, had been Marshal of France under Jean-sans-Peur, Duke of Burgundy; he took Paris during the civil war, and after being imprisoned in the Bastille, reconquered Pontoise from the English, and helped to reconquer Paris. Another Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, born in 1464, Grand Master of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, defended Rhodes against 200,000 Turks for a whole year, in one of the most famous sieges in history; it was he who obtained from Charles V. the concession of the isle of Malta for his Order, henceforth the Order of the Knights of Malta. For Villiers, to whom time, after all, was but a metaphysical abstraction, the age of the Crusaders had not passed. From a descendant of the Grand Master of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, the nineteenth century demanded precisely the virtues which the sixteenth century had demanded of that ancestor. And these virtues were all summed up in one word, which, in its double significance, single to him, covered the whole attitude of life: the word "nobility." No word returns oftener to the lips in speaking of what is most characteristic in his work, and to Villiers moral and spiritual nobility seemed but the inevitable consequence of that other kind of nobility by which he seemed to himself still a Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. It was his birthright.
