John Millington Synge
Figure de la renaissance littéraire irlandaise.
Russell,
L'Irlande du dedans et du dehors
Téry,
L'Ile des bardes

John Synge 's father Edward Synge could trace his family back to the fifteenth century. The origin of the name "Synge" is described in the introduction to General relativity : papers in honour of J L Synge The name Synge is said to have originated with Henry VIII, who commanded a favourite choirboy to "Synge, Millington, synge". John Synge's mother, Ellen Price, was of Scottish origin, being descended from the Scottish Stuarts, in particular a Sir William Stuart who went to Ireland in the early seventeenth century. After being educated at St Andrews College in Dublin, Synge entered Trinity College, Dublin in 1915. There his achievements were quite remarkable, winning a Foundation Scholarship at the end of his first year. This scholarship was normally won by students in their third year of study. He was awarded his M.A. in 1919 in Mathematics and Experimental Physics. He received the Large Gold Medal for his outstanding work. After graduating, Synge was appointed to a lectureship in mathematics at Trinity College, but he only held the post for a short time, leaving for Canada in 1920. from 1920 to 1925 Synge was an assistant professor of mathematics at the University of Toronto. Then in 1925 he returned to Trinity College, Dublin where he was elected to a fellowship and also appointed to the chair of Natural Philosophy (the older name for Physics).

JOHN MILLINGTON SYNGE
The Shadow of the Glen, 1903

John Millington Synge

Plays In the Shadow of the Glen
John Millington Synge
was born in 1871 near Dublin, Ireland. IN THE SHADOW OF THE GLEN was the first produced play by the always-controversial Synge, whose PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD (now considered a classic of the modern theatre) sparked riots when first produced in 1907. Synge died in 1909 of Hodgkin's disease, just six years after the production of his first play.

59. John Millington Synge: A Biography
Few of Ireland's great writers led a life more private than synge's. Thisbiography established synge in the hearts of a new generation.
http://www.david-kiely.co.uk/books/synge2.htm
Few of Ireland's great writers led a life more private than Synge's. On the surface, he was a reticent individual, not naturally given to flamboyance or eccentricity. His withdrawn nature probably explains why, until now, Synge has been such a problem for biographers..
In this biography, David Kiely triumphs over the difficulties of his subject and presents the most complete and compelling portrait to date of this enigmatic genius. Synge was born into an evangelical Protestant world that was increasingly at odds with the mainstream of Irish society. He himself became an agnostic and a Darwinian at an early age, thus further alienating himself from his own background. None the less, he retained an interest in the occult and the mystical which was to stand him in good stead as a writer.
He was intensely musical. Indeed his original intention was to make a career as a professional musician and he studied in Germany to that end. In time he abandoned music for literature, but his greatest plays sing with a unique musical language quite unlike the work of any other dramatist.
His three plays, "In the Shadow of the Glen", "Riders to the Sea" and "The Playboy of the Western World" established modern Irish drama and gave it its central position in the Irish literary revival. But the author of these remarkable works was a dying man. For years he had battled with Hodgin's Disease and in 1909 he succumbed at the age of 38. This biography established Synge in the hearts of a new generation.
