Arthur Sze: "The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998"
By R.W. French In recent weeks I have been reading through the poems of Arthur Sze, resident of Pojoaque and Professor of Creative Writing at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. The poems are conveniently collected, at least through 1998, in "The Redshifting Web." This is a full and rewarding book; its 262 pages of poetry fill the mind and delight the sensuous imagination. It is also a book of compelling intellect; to summarize it in brief compass is no simple task. Fortunately, I am saved from having to make the effort, since the best introduction to "The Redshifting Web" has already - been written, by a man who-no mean feat-never read the book. That would be Henry James, who died in 1916. In "The Art of Fiction" James wrote this:
"If experience consists of impressions, it may be said that impressions ARE experience, just as (have we not seen it?) they are the very air we breathe. Therefore, if I should certainly say to a novice, 'Write from experience and experience only.' I should feel that this was rather a tantalising monition if I were not careful immediately to add, 'Try to be one of the people on whom nothing is lost!'"
Arthur Sze is no novice-far from it; he is an accomplished craftsman-but in the poems of "The Redshifting Web" he follows, in his way, James's dictum to write from experience-remembering, always, that experience includes impressions, and that impressions can be imaginative as well as sensuous. This is a poetry of extraordinary attentiveness; like Emily Dickinson, Sze finds depths of significance in the small and the ordinary. Nothing is missed, nothing is beyond notice. Consider, for example, an older poem, "North to Taos," published in "Two Ravens" (1976):

BEFORE SUNRISE
The myriad unfolds from a progression of strokes one, ice, corpse, hair, jade, tiger. Unlocking a gate along a barbed wire fence, I notice beer cans and branches in the acequia. There are no white pear blossoms by the gate, no red poppies blooming in the yard, no lepiota naucina clustered by the walk, butbean, goldthere's the intricacy of a moment whenwind, three-legged incense caldron I begin to walk through a field with cow pies toward the Pojoaque River, sense deer, yellow , rat. I step through water, go up the arroyo, find a single magpie feather. This is a time whenblood in my piss, ache in my nose and teeth I sense tortoise, flute where there is no sound, wake to human bones carved and strung into a loose apron.

Fall 1998 The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998 Arthur Sze Copper Canyon Press ($17) by Tony Barnstone n "Kafka and His Precursors," Jorge Luis Borges tries to get at the sources of Kafka's peculiar vision and traces widespread affinities with earlier texts, such as the fantasies of Lord Dunsany, the essays of T'ang Dynasty poet Han Yu, the parables of Kierkegaard, and the poetry of Robert Browning. In the end, however, Borges is forced to admit that the strongest connecting thread within this diversity of precursors is Kafka's idiosyncratic vision. Thus, in a very real fashion, "each writer creates his precursors" instead of the other way around. I admit that in launching into this essay on the poetry of Arthur Sze, Borges's sweet paradox was the precursor to my own meditations, but wonder if Borges might have been cribbing his ideas on influence from T. S. Eliot's essay "Tradition and the Individual Talent," as Eliot probably was cribbing from Emerson's "Self Reliance." Where does the hall of mirrors end? The Redshifting Web Arthur Sze's breakthrough book was Archipelago , not only in terms of public recognition, but more importantly in terms of the developmental arc of his poetry. The poems in

As an archaeologist unearths a mask with opercular teeth
and abalone eyes, someone throws a broken fan and extension cords
into a dumpster. A point of coincidence exists in the mind resembling the tension between a denotation and its stretch
of definition: aurora: a luminous phenomenon consisting
of streamers or arches of light appearing in the upper atmosphere of a planet's polar regions, caused by the emission of light
from atoms excited by electrons accelerated along the planet's
magnetic field lines. The mind's magnetic field lines. When the red shimmering in the huge dome of sky stops,
a violet flare is already arcing up and across, while a man
foraging a dumpster in Cleveland finds some celery and charred fat. Hunger, angst: the blue shimmer of emotion, water speeding
through a canyon; to see only to know: to wake finding
a lug nut, ticket stub, string, personal card, ink smear, $2.76. A Kwakiutl wooden dish with a double-headed wolf is missing from a museum collection. And as the director checks to see if it was deaccessioned

The blood in your arteries is contaminated with sugar.
You may hate the adrenal reduction of the mind to the mind of a dog, but sic, run may be forms of sugar.
You may whet for the smell of rain on a clear summer night. You may whet for the sugar in red maple leaves.
You may whet for the blue needle of a compass to point north, and when it points north insist you wanted it
to point north-northwest. No, yes. In a dream you catch a white turtle in a net and a voice says,
"Kill it, divine with it, and you shall have good luck," but discard dream structure for a deeper asymmetry.
You thirst in your mind for an insulin, death: death in the yellow saguaro flower opening at midnight,
death in a canyon wren's song at sunrise, death in red carp swimming in a clear pool of water,
death in an April moonrise. Now the figure-of-eight knot, overhand knot, thief knot, loop knot, bowline knot,
slide knot, slipknot, sheepshank is pulled tighter and tighter.
