PUBLISHED 8/5/98 Arthur Sze: The Redshifting Web by Britt Robson Arthur Sze The Redshifting Web Copper Canyon Press ARTHUR SZE KNOWS that the essence of surrealism is juxtapositionarranging images to create new shapes in the reader's imagination. At the center of The Redshifting Web , a collection of Sze's poems taken from the past 28 years, is a yearning to make musical logic and magic out of apparent non sequiturs. In "The Pulse," from 1987, Sze describes a hysterical woman writing letters to God in the psychiatric ward. In one stanza Sze mentions her botanical inquiry regarding the growth of chiasma roots and, a few lines later, a philosophical question about the "visual cortex" of the brain. And a few lines after this, the unnamed narrator offers a plainspoken description of his walk down an arroyo lined with old tires and broken glass.

    http://www.public.asu.edu/~jarndt/one.html
The term “Asian/Pacific American Art” can be defined in various ways. One definition is art created by an Asian American, hence the type of artwork is of lesser importance. Another definition is art containing Asian/Pacific techniques and influences. If this is the case then why is not it simply labeled Asian/Pacific Art? I believe there are times when an artwork is not appreciated for its true beauty due to careless labeling. It is refreshing to know that two well known Asian Americans, Fred Wei-han Houn and Arthur Sze view this term in their own unique way. Houn defines Asian American art as a collective body of folk and traditions of art. Houn states that each work depicts Asian American life therefore we cannot judge it by the intentions of the artist but by the impact it has on the real world. Houn strongly believes that the “Asian American cultural tradition emanates from the working class in the Asian communities and is in the Asian languages and dialects.” (33) He feels that literature from the working class evokes and conveys various feelings and expressions, hence depicting Asian American life realistically.

    Assignment #1
September 6, 2002 What is Asian Pacific American Art? Fred Houn and Arthur Sze illustrate the different sides in the battle to define what Asian Pacific American art is. On one side, you have artists who want to make art that serves the Asian Pacific American community and on the other side, you have artists who want to make art for art’s sake. Both writers make good points but also have holes in their definition of Asian Pacific American art, leaving it difficult to decide which side is the right side.
    Part 2
What I know about Asian Pacific American art and culture thus far is limited to my own Japanese American heritage. In fact, the main reason I took this class was to gain a broader understanding of what Asian Pacific American art and culture is. I have lived in Arizona for most of my life and while the Asian Pacific American community has grown quite a bit it still is fairly small compared to other ethnicities in the area. It is only through church and the Japanese American Citizen's League that I was able to keep in touch with the Japanese American community here, as well as have the opportunity to see Asian Pacific American artists, like the comedy troupe Cold Tofu. I am hoping that through this class I will be able to learn about more about Asian Pacific American art and culture as a whole. Works Cited Houn, Fred Wei-han. "Tradition and Change, Inheritance and Innovation, Not Imitation!" Revolutionary Asian American Art. 1986, 5-7.

    Signs and Portents:
Twelve Poets from the Santa Fe Public Library Workshops
and the Institute of American Indian Arts
Editor's Foreword The twelve poems presented here are from Signs and Portents , an anthology of poems from the Santa Fe Public Library workshops and the Institute of American Indian Arts . The anthology is the third and last collection funded by a Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Fund grant awarded to Arthur Sze. Arthur partnered with the library over a three-year period to organize and present poetry workshops, bring guest poets to Santa Fe, and publish anthologies. This year's poet, Quincy Troupe, conducted a poetry workshop, a reading, and worked with Arthur's creative writing majors at the Institute of American Indian Arts. Poems from Arthur's workshops, Quincy's workshop, and poems from Arthur's students were selected for the anthology which Arthur and I co-edited. I would like to thank Arthur Sze, Joanne Werger, Santa Fe Public Library, and the Lila Wallace Reader's Digest Fund for their support of the original anthology. I would also like to thank Miriam Bobkoff, Santa Fe Public Library, for making this issue of the Santa Fe Poetry Broadside possible.

    Transcontinental Vision
One Poet Goes Against The Grain Of Confessionalism's Egocentrism. By David Penn The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998, by Arthur Sze (Copper Canyon Press). Paper, $17. WHEN POETRY strikes us as insufficient, it's often because once we've navigated the dense, lurid and/or luminous terrain, after we've penetrated the zip-bang, hip intellectual irony (of everything but the zip-bang, hip intellectual irony itself), we discover the poem is little more than a path to meager profunditya sober "aw shucks" in the face of some "hard but true" aspect of emotional life. This is in part an aspect of a Western culture that prefers a world of zero tolerance and "affirmations" over a universe of personal insight. In part, this is the legacy of modern poetry's confessionalist counter-revolution of Lowell, Sexton and Plath almost a half-century ago. But this terrain is also the province of poets whose work never rises above the minor miracle of its own self-expression: the infatuation with the power of creative language to project, combined with an ego insatiably trying to articulate itself as something distinct, worthy of mercy and sympathy. The best of the poetry of Arthur Szenearly 30 years of which has been collected by Copper Canyon Press in The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998 goes against the grain of confessionalism's egocentrism. Against the tendency to limit expression to the small valve of the ego or the merely political self, Sze's poems strike with imagination and a thoroughly integrative aesthetic eye preoccupied, as the critic-poet Clayton Eshleman suggests, "with all the poet knows about himself and his world."

Distributed by Temple University Press for the Asian-American Writers' Workshop. This book features Eileen Tabios (editor of The Asian Pacific American Journal ) discussing the development of a particular poem(s) (featuring early drafts leading to the final draft of a poem) with some of the country's leading poets: Meena Alexander, Indran Amirthanayagam, Mei-Mei Berssenbrugge, Luis Cabalquinto, Marilyn Chin, Sesshu Foster, Jessica Hagedorn, Kimiko Hahn, Garrett Hongo, Li-Young Lee, Timothy Liu, David Mura, Arthur Sze (who also provides an introductory essay), and John Yau. Black Lightning is the first ever publication of poetry-in-progress articles showcasing Asian-American poets. Though the focus of the book is on Asian-American poets, Black Lightning is also believed to be the first collection ever of poetry-in-progress articles that actually feature the drafting stages of the subject poems. Thus, is an invaluable addition to creative writing and poetry literature in general.
