His Grandfather was a railway worker in Johnstown, a small Carmarthen village, because of his work he was called : "Thomas the Guard".
His father won a scholarship in 1895 which enabled him to study at Aberystwyth University, where he studied English, History and Education.
He later became senior English master at the Swansea Grammar School, which Dylan attended.
His father D.J.Thomas was an awesome figure, sarcastic, quick-tempered, he was feared by most of the other teachers and treated the schoolboys as guttersnipes or worse.
He could be quite physical with any of the boys who annoyed him, hitting them and even kicking them out of the classroom.
Whilst the schoolboys feared him, they loved to hear him read aloud to them in class, with his most melodious and beautiful voice.
Dylan followed him with his voice, which was rich and clear and free from any accent.

Dylan Thomas, "The Rimbaud of Cwmdonkin Drive"
Dylan Thomas, drinking his muse
Dylan Marlais Thomas was born in Swansea, Wales on October 27, 1914. The name Dylan comes from the Mabinogion , a collection of 11 mediaeval Welsh tales. The word means "sea". In the tale Math, the son of Mathonwy, challenges Aranrhod, his niece who claims to be a virgin, to step over his magic wand. "Aranrhod stepped over the wand, and with that step she dropped a sturdy boy with thick yellow hair; the boy gave a loud cry, and with that cry she made her way for the door..... "Well," said Math, "I will arrange for the baptism of this one......and I will call him Dylan." The boy was baptized, whereupon he immediately made for the sea, and when he came to the sea he took on its nature and swam as well as the best fish. He was called Dylan (sea) son of Ton (wave), for no wave ever broke beneath him." Marlais is the name of a stream which runs from the hills near the birthplace of Dylan Thomas' great uncle Gwilym Marles Thomas. Marles is a variation of the name Marlais. Dylan Thomas' sister Nancy also bore a variation of the name Marles.

by Dylan Thomas One Christmas was so much like another, in those years around the sea-town corner now and out of all sound except the distant speaking of the voices I sometimes hear a moment before sleep, that I can never remember whether it snowed for six days and six nights when I was twelve or whether it snowed for twelve days and twelve nights when I was six.
All the Christmases roll down toward the two-tongued sea, like a cold and headlong moon bundling down the sky that was our street; and they stop at the rim of the ice-edged fish-freezing waves, and I plunge my hands in the snow and bring out whatever I can find. In goes my hand into that wool-white bell-tongued ball of holidays resting at the rim of the carol-singing sea, and out come Mrs. Prothero and the firemen.
It was on the afternoon of the Christmas Eve, and I was in Mrs. Prothero's garden, waiting for cats, with her son Jim. It was snowing. It was always snowing at Christmas. December, in my memory, is white as Lapland, though there were no reindeers. But there were cats. Patient, cold and callous, our hands wrapped in socks, we waited to snowball the cats. Sleek and long as jaguars and horrible-whiskered, spitting and snarling, they would slink and sidle over the white back-garden walls, and the lynx-eyed hunters, Jim and I, fur-capped and moccasined trappers from Hudson Bay, off Mumbles Road, would hurl our deadly snowballs at the green of their eyes. The wise cats never appeared.
We were so still, Eskimo-footed arctic marksmen in the muffling silence of the eternal snows - eternal, ever since Wednesday - that we never heard Mrs. Prothero's first cry from her igloo at the bottom of the garden. Or, if we heard it at all, it was, to us, like the far-off challenge of our enemy and prey, the neighbor's polar cat. But soon the voice grew louder.

Biography
Dylan Marlais Thomas
Writer, poet UK Born 27 Oct 1914
Died 9 Nov 1953
Dylan Thomas was born in Swansea and educated at the Swansea Grammar School where his father was teaching. As an early indication of his literary talent he became editor of the School Magazine. After leaving school, Dylan worked briefly as a reporter on the "South Wales Daily Post" before leaving for London to embark on a literary career.
His first book of poetry, 'Eighteen Poems' was published in 1934. It was followed by 'Twenty-five Poems' in 1936, 'Deaths and Entrances', 1946, and 'Collected Poems', 1952. Dylan also wrote prose, mainly short stories, 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog', 1940. Additionally, he wrote a number of film scripts and broadcast frequently on the radio. His most famous work and his only theatre play 'Under Milk Wood' originally written as a play for voices, was first performed in New York on 14th May 1953.
He visited America for the first time in January 1950, at the age of thirty-five. His reading tours did much to popularise the poetry reading as a new medium for the art, and became famous in their notoriety. Thomas, the archetypal Romantic, was flamboyantly theatrical, a heavy drinker, constantly engaged in outrageous disputes with the audience and colleagues, and read his work aloud with tremendous depth of feeling.
Dylan died in New York at the tragically early age of 39 during a lecture tour after a particularly long drinking bout.

November

Portrait of the artist as a young dog
Zijn "Portrait of the artist as a Young Dog" (titel ontleend aan "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" van James Joyce) oogst bewondering (1940 Dent). In de oorlogsjaren verdient de drankzuchtige bard de kost met het schrijven van filmscripts in opdracht van het Ministerie van Propaganda en leeft hij in Londen met zijn vrouw Caitlin Macnamara, die danseres is.
