Information by Jarrod Pinkerton - BV class of 2002 Biography Hunter Stockton Thompson was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1937. He is best known for his original style of writing, or as he calls it, "gonzo journalism." It basically means taking the truth and then embellishing a bit here and there to make the story that much more exciting. He put this idea to practice in his most famous book, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas , which he wrote for Rolling Stone in 1971. He lived his life much like the main character, Raoul Duke. Excessive drug consumption and altercations with the law were very common. Currently he writes for ESPN forming weekly thoughts on games, scores, and the faults in his gambling. Summary Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas begins with two throwback's from the sixties, Raoul Duke and Oscar Ascota, entering Las Vegas to cover a motorbike race. The idea of coverage becomes lost in a drug induced frenzy and a constant search for the American Dream. The two stumble through obstacles like a drunken Inspector Clouseau. They make it through a risky situation with an underage girl, a sit-it at a district attorney's conference, piles of unpaid hotel bills, and a lack of commitmet to the original goal. The key to the American Dream was found inside a Vegas casino that Raoul referred to as the "main nerve." This main nerve leads them to an old disco called the "American Dream," that had burnt down in the late sixties. Review

What Happened to Hunter S. Thompson? Magazine Maven by Scott Dickensheets Previously in Magazine Maven ... Fear and Loathing in America in the December Vanity Fair Vanity Fair instead of Rolling Stone ? Sure, Thompson has thumped RS Rolling Stone, an excerpt there makes more sense than a cameo among the swells and bluebloods of Vanity Fair. That passage has the familiar gonzo swing, minus the wheel-spinning, listlessness and enigmatic capitalization substituting for satire that marks his current output. Test these 1969 sentences like fruit at the supermarket. Squeeze them. Poke at them. No soft spots. espn.com c o n t i n u e . . . What do you think about this article?

nonfiction Inside the mind of Hunter S. Thompson Gonzo journalist recaps his wild, improbable life By Diane Hartman
Special to The Denver Post
Sunday, January 12, 2003 - Hunter Thompson? Are you kidding? Mumbles, slurs his words, drug-stuffed. Surely addled. Surely washed up. However, while you may feel you've dipped into the devil's caldron at times, his prose is precise (angry, furious, all lathered up, but precise). Lots of it is more yelled than printed, but that makes it all the more entertaining. This is an autobiography, of sorts. He begins in 1946, Louisville, Ky., retelling his brush with the FBI at age 9. Little Hunter was a "prime suspect" in the turning over of a federal mailbox into the path of a speeding school bus. Of course, he was guilty - he and his buddies had planned their caper to get back at the "drunken swine of a substitute bus driver." When the men questioned him, his father gave him some good advice: "Shut up." Turns out they had no proof, he was not arrested and didn't have to spend five years in the penitentiary, as they had threatened. He began as an obstreperous, conniving (creative) boy on the other side of the law and that's where he stayed.

The Weekly Standard 's David Brooks surveys anti-war literature. He finds "academic and literary intellectuals who have so devoted themselves to questioning meanings, deconstructing texts, decoding signifiers, and unmasking perspectives, they can't even make an argument anymore." Robo-Gore
Opinion Journal's James Taranto takes apart Al Gore's Iraq speech: "It appears Saddam Hussein has unleashed a new weapon of mass distraction on America, a Gore-like android so realistic it is every bit as lifeless as the real thing." Slate 's William Saletan says the Iraq debate pits the "party of fear against the party of good will." Timothy Noah argues that Gore's position on Iraq hasn't changed. Hunter S. Is Hunter S. Thompson a Tool of the System
By Peter Huston
In Guilderland, New York, Hoyt's Cinema one through eighteen, an anti-trust suit waiting to happen, is located inside Crossgates Mall, a gargantuan structure built on top of the vanishing homelands of the endangered Blue Karner Butterfly. -an appropriate setting to watch a movie on excess and the death of the American dream. The underpaid clerk in a silly red vest asked for eight dollars. "Isn't the 3:40 showing at matinee prices?" I asked. "Oh no sir," he said, facial twitch acting up. "They've changed policies. Only the 1:30 showing is now at matinee prices." Hoyt's being an Australian owned chain and this man, far, far from the one to blame, there was no way to effectively object. After taking my money, and only after taking my money, he'd informed me I'd come to the wrong slice of the eighteen theaters advising me to proceed several hundred yards to the center of the sweeping mall where I would find the missing theater with my movie. "Will I have time? The movie's only in five minutes," I asked, holding a ticket that I apparently could not return. "Relax," he smiled. "Just remember there are eight to twelve minutes of trailers before each film."

Hunter S. Thompson Muses About a Run
Colorado, Wednesday, November 29, 1995 Gonzo journalist Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (D) may be "mellowing like a fine bourbon," but to his "political foes" in Roaring Fork Valley, Thompson is "still scary as the plague of cockroaches he fears may be invading" his area. Thompson "had been pretty much keeping to himself" following his narrow loss in a race for Aspen sheriff in '70, but was "roused to action" before election day '95 by a proposal to expand air traffic into Aspen's airport; the traffic would have flown over his house. "Few can match faxes" with Thompson. His "manifesto" against the depredations of increased Aspen development read: "The time has come for the whole human community of the Roaring Fork Valley to say that we will accept no more garbage coming out of Aspen." It ended with the line: "There is some shit we won't eat." Thompson and his "coalition" of Colorado citizens defeated the initiative. Following the victory, under Thompson's "vociferous leadership," someone "floated the idea" of a run for retiring Sen. Hank Brown's (R) seat. The field is "wide open" for the Democratic nomination and he "figures he would start with a 20 percent support base." Thompson said of his potential candidacy, "It might be worth it just to keep them honest." In the meantime, Thompson is writing a script for a CBS cop series for his friend, actor Don Johnson, writing about motorcycles for Cycle World and Men's Journal

by Hunter S. Thompson Simon Schuster The Rum Diary was begun in 1959 by then twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson. It was his first novel, and he told his friend, the author William Kennedy, that The Rum Diary would "in a twisted way . . . do for San Juan what Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises did for Paris." In Paul Kemp, the novel's hero, there are echoes of the young Thompson, who was himself honing his wildly musical writing style as one of the "ill-tempered wandering rabble" on staff at the San Juan Daily News at the time. "I shared a dark suspicion," Kemp says, "that the life we were leading was a lost cause, we were all actors, kidding ourselves along on a senseless odyssey. It was the tension between these two poles a restless idealism on one hand and a sense of impending doom on the other - that kept me going." RUMRING INDEX

Hunter Thompson (right) with Writers Institute videographer Hugo Perez (left) Hunter S. Thompson ranks among the first and foremost practitioners of the New Journalism style practiced by Tom Wolfe and Gay Talese, among others. He created explosive, first person, gonzo style of reporting that pushed the limits of American literary journalism into bold new directions. He is the author of such widely read books as Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 The Curse of Lono Songs of the Doomed Better Than Sex: Confessions of a Political Junkie (1994), and The Proud Highway His new book The Rum Diary: The Long Lost Novel Fear and Loathing books to become one of the most celebrated literary figures of his time. It is Thompson's first work of fiction, a lyrical masterpiece of passion, craziness and raw ambition, that was set aside when the great wave of the 1960's rolled over American letters. Forty years later, but with the timeless quality of all great fiction, the novel has been resurrected.
