Coffee Achiever by Alex Scofield Imagine retreating to nature, embarking on a journey in living simply, confronting only life’s essentials. You’d be forced to bring only the barest of necessities, and debate what few belongings you simply couldn’t live without. Do You Need Coffee? If you think that Henry David Thoreau never pondered the significance of coffee during his famed stay at Walden Pond, think again. Historians agree that when Thoreau moved into his Walden home in 1845, there were not yet any Starbucks franchises in Concord, Massachusetts. Yet coffee makes a surprising number of appearances in Walden, and Thoreau has plenty to say on the subject. Many of his Concord neighbors were drinking it, and today’s coffee lover might be surprised how familiar a role coffee played in the lives of Concordians a century and a half ago. Henry David Thoreau
American essayist, poet, and practical philosopher, best-known for his autobiographical story of life in the woods, WALDEN (1854). Thoreau became one of the leading personalities in New England Transcendentalism. He wrote tirelessly but earned from his books and journalism little. Thoreau's CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE (1849) influenced Gandhi in his passive resistance campaigns, Martin Luther King, Jr., and at one time the politics of the British Labour Party.
Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, which was center of his life, although he spent several years in his childhood in the neighboring towns and later elsewhere. Thoreau studied at Concord Academy (1828-33), and at Harvard University, graduating in 1837. He was teacher in Canton, Massachusetts (1835-36), and at Center School (1837), resigning after two weeks. In 1835 he contracted tuberculosis and suffered from recurring bouts throughout his life.
From 1837-38 Thoreau worked in his father's pencil factory, and later in 1844 and 1849-50. He opened with his brother John a school in Concord and taught there in 1838-41 until his brother became fatally ill. From 1848 he was a regular lecturer at Concord Lyceym. He also worked as a land surveyor.

Without the work of this project, almost half of the surviving manuscripts of Henry D. Thoreau, including quotations like this one, might never appear in print. Much of his poetry, letters, Journal entries, early essays, translations, and nature writings would be condemned to obscurity. The Thoreau Edition was founded in 1966 as an attempt to recover the lost words of one of America's most influential writers and to answer the pressing need for a complete, definitive, annotated, and readily available edition of his writings, including his Journal and correspondence. Fourteen volumes of a projected thirty have been published by Princeton University Press to date. Elizabeth Hall Witherell is Editor-in-Chief. The project, located in the Founders Memorial Library at Northern Illinois University , is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities , an independent federal agency. Democratic Origins and Revolutionary Writers, 1776-1820: Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
Index Henry David Thoreau, of French and Scottish descent, was born in Concord and made it his permanent home. From a poor family, like Emerson , he worked his way through Harvard. Throughout his life, he reduced his needs to the simplest level and managed to live on very little money, thus maintaining his independence. In essence, he made living his career. A nonconformist, he attempted to live his life at all times according to his rigorous principles. This attempt was the subject of many of his writings. Thoreau's masterpiece, Walden , or Life in the Woods (1854), is the result of two years, two months, and two days (from 1845 to 1847) he spent living in a cabin he built at Walden Pond on property owned by Emerson. In Walden , Thoreau consciously shapes this time into one year, and the book is carefully constructed so the seasons are subtly evoked in order. The book also is organized so that the simplest earthly concerns come first (in the section called "Economy," he describes the expenses of building a cabin); by the ending, the book has progressed to meditations on the stars.
