http://www.grecoreport.com/thucydides.htm
Thucydides' lessons are timeless, and an in-depth knowledge of his History of the Peloponnesian War should be a part of every thinking person's education. What follows is a verbatim account of a lecture on the lessons of history that "the world's greatest historian" can teach us, and their relevance for our time. This presentation was made by Dr. Srdja Trifkovic, distinguished scholar, researcher and journalist, as part of The Regnery Lectures, at the Third Annual Summer School, sponsored by The Rockford Institute of Rockford, Illinois, from 1 to 5 August 2000. The title of this series was: The Greek Roots of Christendom. Title of Lecture: From the Republic of Athens to the Athenian Empire: Athenian Hegemony and its Lessons for America. Historical parallels between eras and events are valid and important, because the factor of human nature remains relatively constant. It would be preposterous to assume that our jet engines or intimate search engines make us significantly different from our European ancestors. To claim that our material progress over the past century or two makes us in any way wiser or better than the Greeks of twenty-five centuries ago would be simply hilarious. Let us therefore look at the story of the Athenian rise and fall as a reminder to our present-day rulers that certain modes of political thinking and behavior will produce similar results today, just as they did in 404 B.C., or in 1815, or in 1945. The Persian invasion of mainland Greece in 480 B.C. transformed the Greek world forever. It played a crucial role in the refinement and definition of the Hellenic identity. Admittedly, of the hundreds of Greek city-states, only a few dozen opposed the Persian King-of-Kings, and only a small minority of Greeks participated in the war. But the victorious Athenians asserted freedom from external restraint as the key ingredient of Greek consciousness. In the years that followed the Persian defeat, Athenian power grew unabated. Its rise was due, in no small part, to the geo-political genius of Themistocles, whose grasp of the need for a strong, permanent navy was eminently modern in its strategic assumptions, and in its concept of the projection of power. The withdrawal of the Spartans from the continuing war against the Persians additionally helped Athens' claim, still limited and modest at that time, to be recognized as

OXFORD, England - We read of divers men that bear the name of Thucydides. There is Thucydides a Pharsalian, mentioned in the eighth book of this history; who was public host of the Athenians in Pharsalus, and chancing to be at Athens at the time that the government of the Four Hundred began to go down, by his interposition and persuasion kept asunder the factions then arming themselves, that they fought not in the city to the ruin of the commonwealth.
Cimoniana , belonging to the family of Miltiades, in which none but such as were of that family might be buried. And amongst those was the monument of Thucydides; with this inscription, THUCYDIDES OROLI HALIMUSIUS.

Logos: A Journal of Undergraduate Classical Scholarship Volume 1: 2001-2002 Dionysius of Halicarnassus and Thucydides Book I:
A Critique of the Archaeology and the Pentecontaetia
Rhett Martin, University of Central Arkansas Dionysius of Halicarnassus was one of Thucydides' most formidable critics in antiquity. In a letter to his friend, Quintus Aelius Tubero, known to modern scholars as De Thucydide , he examines two rhetorical features of Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War' oikonomia (the arrangement of material), and ho lektikos tropos (style). In this paper I will focus on Dionysius' remarks about the oikonomia of Book I. Dionysius' criticisms of Book I consist in what he sees as the needless detail of the Archaeology and the awkward placement of the Pentecontaetia . An adequate understanding of these two sections is important for understanding the composition of the entire work, and a reply must be made to Dionysius' criticisms if one does not want to follow him—and many others who have agreed subsequently agreed with him—in mistaking Thucydides' subtlety and precision for carelessness and a wanton predilection for obscurity. Indeed, once one perceives the principles underlying the composition of Book I, the "meandering" arrangement of Thucydides' narrative becomes (for the most part) eminently intelligible.

Books VI and VII: The Sicilian Expedition
In V.25-6 Thucydides explains that the peace of Nicias was only an interval in what was really one war. Athens and Sparta drifted back into war (although it was almost seven years before Athenians and Spartans directly fought one another; V.25, VII.18). In book VI Thucydides describes the next major Athenian action, an attack on Syracuse, a democratic city in Sicily, not allied with Sparta. Ostensibly the Athenians went there to aid certain allies, and to cut off possible help for Sparta from the cities of the western Mediterranean. Thucydides suggests that their real aim was to extend their empire (contrary to Pericles' advice not to try to add to the empire during the war, II.65). Read VI.8-18 Compare Nicias and Alcibiades on the rationality of taking risks in extending the empire. Which is right? Just before the departure of the Sicilian expedition Alcibiades was accused of impiety (certain statues had been desecrated), and was later recalled from Sicily to face the charge. Instead he went to Sparta and offered his services. Read VI.89-92

The Peloponnesian War
Thucydides
(Excerpt) translated by Benjamin Jowett
Chapter 7
Pericles Thucydides offers a commentary on Athenian Ideals through Pericles and his Famous Funeral Oration. And we have not forgotten to provide for our weary spirits many relaxations from toil: we have regular games and sacrifices throughout the year: at home the style of our life is refined; and the delight which we daily feel in all these things helps to banish melancholy. Because of the greatness of our city the fruits of the whole earth flow in upon us; so that we enjoy the goods of other countries as freely as our own. Then, again, our military training is in many respects superior to that of our adversaries. Our city is thrown open to the world, and we never expel a foreigner or prevent him from seeing or learning anything of which the secret if revealed to an enemy might profit him. We rely not upon management or trickery, but upon our own hearts and hands And in the matter of education, whereas they from early youth are always undergoing laborious exercises which are to make them brave, we live at ease, and yet are equally ready to face the perils which they face . . . . I have dwelt upon the greatness of Athens because I want to show you that we are contending for a higher prize than those who enjoy none of these privileges, and to establish by manifest proof the merit of these men whom I am now commemorating. Their loftiest praise has been already spoken. For in magnifying the city I have magnified them, and men like them whose virtues made her glorious. And of how few Hellenes can it be said as of them, that their deeds when weighed in the balance have been found equal to their fame! It seems to me that a death such as theirs has been given the true measure of a man's worth, it may be the first revelation of his virtues, but is at any rate their final seal.

Thucydides and the Discovery of Historical Causation
by John Lewis , PhD University of Cambridge, Assistant Professor of History in the Ashland University Department of History and Political Science The ancient Greek historian Herodotus wrote in the mid fifth-century BC about the centuries-long enmity between the Greeks and the Persians, which climaxed in the Persian Wars. He had to rely primarily on oral accounts of events that occurred centuries earlier, and consequently it was difficult for him to be accurate about those events. He deserves to be called the "father of history" for his achievement in committing oral history to writing. What is his method? When stories conflict, he often gives us both sides, refusing to select which is right. For example at Book 1 section 5 he says : "These are the stories of the Persians and the Phoenicians. For my own part, I will not say that this or that story is true." He goes on to take a stand about a particular fact, but his focus remains primarily on what people said and thought about history. In many ways he remains a storyteller. He also interprets events in terms of his own time. His discussion of the establishment of the Persian monarchy (3.80 f.) is recounted in terms of a fifth-century Athenian political debate. Taken literally, the story would mean that the Persians discovered democracy and oligarchy in the 560's BC, rejected them in favor of monarchy, and selected their monarch by a contest of neighing horses.

Thucydides:
2nd cousin 79 times removed Historian, chronicler of the Peloponnesian war 450 - 395 BC. Thucydides was the greatest of ancient Greek historians and the father of scientific history. He is the author of the "History of the Peloponnesian War", which recounts the struggle between Athens and Sparta in the 5th century BC. All that we can know about Thucydides must be gleaned from the few things that he says about himself in his narrative. Thucydides' father, Olorus, was of Thracian descent and his family was among the Athenian nobility. The family owned gold mining property in Thrace, which helped to support Thucydides' historical endeavors after he was banished from Athens. Thucydides took great care to record an accurate history of the Peloponnesian War, without any regard to its entertainment value. Thucydides either saw the battle scenes himself or obtained firsthand accounts. From here the descent continues to present day through various
Macedonian, Syrian (Hellenistic) and Iberian kingdoms. See family tree.
