Poetry and Poetics: 1930 to the Present
    Spring 2003
    Hugh Haughton (hbh1@york.ac.uk) Overview
The aim of the course is to trace late modern and contemporary poetry from its origins in later modernism. It will look at a series of representative poets, poems and debates about the development of modern poetry, starting with late Yeats and Wallace Stevens, but continuing until the present day. Sceptical about any single notion of 'tradition' or 'canon' of modern poetry, the course will explore major poems and influential statements of poetics by a wide range of English-language poets, drawn from Britain, Ireland and the United States. These may include W.H. Auden, John Ashbery, Elizabeth Bishop, Basil Bunting, Thom Gunn, Seamus Heaney, Geoffrey Hill, Ted Hughes, Robert Lowell, Louis MacNeice, Mebh McGuckian, Paul Muldoon, Frank O'Hara, Sylvia Plath, and Derek Walcott. The aim is to look closely at poetic language itself in a wide range of later twentieth-century poets and to raise some questions about different and opposing notions of form and tradition in constructions of 'Modern Poetry' in the English language. The course will look at key volumes by important poets each decade - and try to open up and debate contesting versions of poetic 'modernity' and different models of the poem in relationship to literary culture more broadly conceived. Seminar Topics The following represents a provisional programme. Each week we will consider a major figure, landmark works and debates over their subsequent significance in poetic history. Though we address large-scale questions about poetics and cultural history, the focus of discussion will be on individual poems and their language. The emphasis falls less upon contemporary poetry than on the genealogies of contemporary poetry - and competing notions of what constitutes the twentieth-century canon.

(letter to Judy Egerton, 5 May 1959)
On this page, you can find a number of poems by Philip Larkin. I have started by inserting those poems which I already had on file. I hope to add more poems later on. However, you can read all poems in the Collected Poems (Ed. Anthony Thwaite), of course. I strongly recommend it. I have also added a section with some excerpts from letters by Larkin (1941-1950). It had been my intention to anthologize, as it were, the most memorable quotes from the Selected Letters of Philip Larkin: 1940-1985 (Ed. Anthony Thwaite), but there is simply too much material to be included. If I ever do continue, I will update the online version as well.
