Nicholas Lezard's choice
Definitely required reading
Nicholas Lezard enjoys the long-awaited second volume of Philip Larkin's prose writings, Further Requirements

Buy Further Requirements at Amazon.co.uk As Thwaite reminds us in his introduction, the last collection of Larkin's prose, Required Writing, was published in the poet's lifetime. Since then - as Thwaite does not remind us - Larkin's reputation has suffered a considerable savaging. This has very little to do with his work and everything to do with the self-aggrandising postures of university teachers anxious to distinguish themselves for the ceaseless purity of their morals. The fact that he wore cycle-clips was bad enough for them; when they discovered he liked mucky mags and Thatcher, it became open season on him.

The Penguin Book of Japanese Verse
Translated by Geoffrey Bownas and Anthony Thwaite
    London: Penguin, 1964; Pages: lxxvi,243
This eclectic collection of Japanese poetry covers most styles, starting from the third century and ending with the mid-twentieth. It provides a decent overview of waka , and includes such diverse entries as folk songs, lullabies, along with the classic tanka , and the later haiku renga , and . Given this diversity (which was a stated goal of the compilers), it is no surprise that the material is uneven. Although Bownas and Thwaite include recognizably superior poems, they opted for the inclusion of many lesser ones, presumably out of desire to provide a faithful picture of Japanese verse. While this attitude is admirable, I question its usefulness, especially when the book is clearly intended for nonspecialists like me. I care less about getting a "true" picture than about reading fine poetry, much of which is not present in this volume. I also found the 20th century poets the translator chose particularly uninspired, if not quite annoying. The book, however, is not without merits. The long introduction is an excellent starting point for exploration of Japanese poetry even if the authors delve into gory (and extraneous) technicalities about the language. Without prior knowledge of Japanese, I found their discussion of meter, rhyme, etc. quite distracting. On the other hand, the introduction provides a very clear description of crucial concepts, such as

    Organizational History
Nimbus , a British "little magazine" of the 1950s, represents part of a rich history of literary magazines that reflect not only the literary, but also the social and political history of England. Nimbus continued as well a tradition of modernism cultivated since World War I, especially by writers of the Bloomsbury group and the Auden generation. Nimbus was among such important little magazines as Encounter London Magazine , and Poetry (London) edited by such distinguished writers as T. S. Eliot, John Lehmann, and Stephen Spender, that helped set a tone of excellence in the publication of little magazines and were instrumental in changing the mood and direction of modern British literature.
