Jean Toomer's Washington and the Politics of Class: From "Blue Veins" to Seventh-Street Rebels Familiarity, in most people, indicates not a sentiment of comradeship, an emotion of brotherhood, but simply a lack of respect and reverence tempered by the unkindly . . . desire to level down whatever is above them, to assert their own puny egos at whatever damage to those fragile tissues of elevation which constitute the worthwhile meshes of our civilization. Jean Toomer, 1921 It is generally established that the causes of race prejudice may primarily be found in the economic structure that compels one worker to compete against another and that furthermore renders it advantageous for the exploiting classes to inculcate, foster, and aggravate that competition. Jean Toomer, 1919 It is a critical commonplace that Jean Toomer's Cane is a largely autobiographical work displaying its author's discovery of his profound identification with African Americans and their culture. This concern is signalled in Toomer's own often-quoted statements: the 1922 Liberator letter in which he remarked that "my growing need for artistic expression has pulled me deeper and deeper into the Negro group" and that, during his visit to Georgia the previous fall, "a deep part of my nature, a part I had repressed, sprang suddenly to life and responded" to the "rich dusk beauty" of "Negro peasants" with "folk-songs [at their] lips"; the 1923 letter to Sherwood Anderson noting that "my seed was planted in the cane- and cotton-fields, . . . . was planted in

Talk about it only enough to do it. Dream about it only enough to feel it. Think about it only enough to understand it. Contemplate it only enough to be it. Once a man has tasted creative action, then thereafter, no matter how safely he schools himself in patience, he is restive, acutely dissatisfied with anything else. He becomes as a lover to whom abstinence is intolerable. We learn the rope of life by untying its knots. We start with gifts. Merit comes from what we make of them.

Add to shopping cart Jean Toomer's Cane was the first major text of the Harlem Renaissance and the first important modernist text by an African-American writer. It powerfully depicts the terror in the history of American race relations, a public world of lynchings, race riots, and Jim Crow, and a private world of internalized conflict over identity and race which mirrored struggles in the culture at large. Toomer's own life reflected that internal conflict, and he has been an ambiguous figure in literary history, an author who wrote a text that had a tremendous impact on African American authors but who eventually tried to distance himself from Cane and from his identification as a black writer. In Jean Toomer and the Terrors of American History, Charles Scruggs and Lee VanDemarr examine original sourcesToomer's rediscovered early writings on politics and race, his extensive correspondence with Waldo Frank, and unpublished portions of his autobiographiesto show how the cultural wars of the 1920s influenced the shaping of Toomer's book and his subsequent efforts to escape the racial definitions of American society. That those definitions remain crucial for American society even today is one reason Toomer's work continues to fascinate and to influence contemporary writers and readers.

    A Jean Toomer Reader
    Selected Unpublished Writings
Edited by FREDERIK L. RUSCH, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York

Jean Toomer achieved instant recognition as a critic and thinker in 1923 with the publication of his novel Cane , a harsh, eloquent vision of black American hardship and suffering. But because of his reclusive, introspective nature, Toomer's fame waned in later years, and today his other contributions to American thought and literature are all but forgotten. Now, this collection of unpublished writings restores a crucial dimension to our understanding of this important African American author. Thematically arranging letters, sketches, poems, autobiography, short stories, a play, and a children's story, Frederik Rusch offers insight into Toomer's mind and spirituality, his feelings on racial identity in America, and his attitudes toward and ideas about Cane . Rusch highlights Toomer's reflections on America, its people, landscape, and politics, reveals his significance for the problems and issues of today, and helps us understand Toomer not only as writer, but also as social critic, prophet, mystic, and idealist. Exploring Toomer's attempts to find self-realization and transcend social and cultural definitions of race, this book offers a unique view of the United States through the life of one of its most significant and fascinating intellectuals.

    N. Jean Toomer Nathaniel Jean Toomer was born on this date in 1894. He was an African American writer. From Washington, D.C., Toomer wanted a bonded argument that would resolve the conflicts of his bi-racial identity.
Born Nathan Pinchback Toomer, his father deserted his mother when he was a year old and his mother died in 1909; thus he was raised in the home of his grandparents.
As a writer, Greenwich Village progressive aesthetes nurtured Toomer in the 1910s and 1920s. His book, Cane was inspired by his two-month stint as a substitute principal at the black Sparta Agricultural and Industrial Institute in Georgia in 1921. Entranced by Georgia's rural geography and its black folk traditions, he saw in Southern life the harmony that escaped him, although he believed the culture to be disappearing through migration to the North and its encounter with modernity.
Cane is a series of vignettes whose narrative structure moves from the South to the North and back to the South, forming a troubled synthesis of the two regions. Members of the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement, as well as later African American women writers have cited its influence and acclaimed the author's sensitive treatment of black folk life, his formal elegance, and his progressive, uninhibited approach to sexuality and gender.
