Jack Israel The Floor of Heaven At the Florida Late Night Radio (1998) and Different Hands Imagine being in someone's urban basement for the screening of a film — is it a home movie or an obscure, obsessive theatrical? Is it a documentary, biography, or comedy/drama? It's probably a blend of the three. (Cinema as subject and metaphor figures throughout; see "Those Gods Made Permanent" in Late Night Radio, and "North Woods" in At The Florida. ) And suppose your fellow viewers comment often and out loud on the action, splicing their own sexual and social perspectives into what's happening on screen. How would you describe the evening? Maybe as a kaleidoscope of information, image, and impression, not quite random though not coherent around a leading theme. And yet themes do emerge in the interplay of comment — city versus country, history versus the lived moment, capitalism versus the humane, the fate and fact of art. The overall effect is one of abundant inclusion rendered in a down-to-earth, no-bullshit tone. See, for instance, "Another Country," from

John Tranter
Three John Ashberys
This is a basic introduction
This piece is 2,500 words or about 8 printed pages long.
THERE ARE THREE John Ashberys. The first is the boy who grew into the man who became a scholar and artificer of words. I call him the Primary or Mundane Ashbery. After a youth spent on a fruit farm in upstate New York he attended college and then Harvard University. He gradually turned into another person, a poet; the poet who wrote all those poems, plugging on year after year, one sheet of paper after another rolling through the Remington, until some sixteen of his works stand there on the shelf to entrance and puzzle us.
So the poet is not that boy, but another person. What did Rimbaud say? person
This mundane manifestation is currently a tall, wide-shouldered man nearing seventy with a slight limp and a courteous, diffident and kindly manner that conceals - almost successfully - a brilliant mind and a wit that revels in gossip as much as in learning. The Mundane Ashbery has a love of old poetry in English and modern prose in French, and of modern art, ballet and music. He has spent his adult life in Paris and New York City. When he reads from his books, in that vague and charming drawl that asks you not to take this stuff too seriously, he looks at certain moments as the Secondary Ashbery might look, hesitant under the reading lamp, searching for the right word. John Ashbery, Sydney, 1992

N DECIDING to start an electronic literary magazine three years ago, Australian poet John Tranter bypassed the most obvious obstacle: money. Jacket , his quarterly e-zine of poetry, interviews, reviews, photographs, and articles, is full-color, has hundreds of pages and graphics, is available 24 hours a day, and commands a global readership on an annual budget of about 1,000 Australian dollars (approximately $570 U.S.). And it's free to its readers, providing they can access the Internet. It doesn't need an advertising budget, because like most Internet sites, Jacket thrives on word of mouth, and in the short time since its debut, the number of hits to its site has grown exponentially. Tranter is by turns publisher, editor, photographer, designer, and writer of Jacket (he jokes that he works with a staff of five: John Tranter, John Tranter, John Tranter, John Tranter, and John Tranter). He's an internationally recognized poet who grew up on a farm on the southeast coast of Australia, a place that he says provided the early training for his newfound prowess in HTML—what he calls the art of tinkering with machinery. He lives in Sydney with his wife, Lyn, with whom he travels the world and has raised two children, and for whom he works at her Sydney-based agency, Australian Literary Management. He has written 10 books of poetry, worked in radio, in typesetting, as a janitor, and as an editor, but his current interest is

Glow-boys
Four a.m. At the reactor an alarm begins
howling. The core’s full of shit: get out
the gloves, the phosphorescent rakes.
A burnt-out star hangs low on the horizon.
The Harrisburg glow-boys knuckle down
to work, poking around in the ashes.
They gaze out through glitter: behind the visor
putty imitates a human face, the lips
gritty, frayed, as they reach for speech
across the static field. Now a bell rings
and they wade thigh-deep into the muck, their eyes the colour of lightning. Five years of that and they’re too hot to touch; they wake screaming before dawn, the pillow soaked. What have they seen: their children’s future flare and crackle, a vast Christmas tree flashing up from the skyline? Rake it up, Ratshit! In a month vacation in the Rockies, drinking rye and blowing rattlesnakes away with a shotgun. Now, like any cleaners, they go to work

Pondering the Orientations of Kenneth, we are
wondering if Chinese restaurants are not unknown to this gentleman. He steps jauntily to the mirror, his reflected youthfulness dazzling the other diners and the waitresses too. Now he writes a poem, and garnishes it with a colon! a pop, a flash, and a small, perfectly-formed miasma has entirely replaced him. Grieving this deprivation, the skies are overcast. no, from the shopping malls of steamy Miami to the brothels of bourbon-dark Jacksonville a draught of Koch is known as a certain cure about God, and vice versa, dispersing and hiding

Three Poems
By John Tranter
STORM OVER SYDNEY Blustering over the Harbour, brilliant rain
slaps and blathers at the rusty Bridge.
I dodge for cover as the sky turns green.
Cars wobble and skid on William Street,
hot with mechanical rage. Lightning strikes twice: a blinding white
crack! and the echo whacks the concrete.
I fossick and dawdle in the supermarket aisles
safely underground, among the paper plates and the jars of honey. The thunder has trundled a thousand miles and boiled the Pacific black to bother us all, and it's dull and sick from its long journey. Now I'm trying to wheel a crook trolley from the shopping mall: the chrome's rusty, and a bent wheel clanks. It's the season of ruby cellophane and holly; the gutters are chock-full of summer hail fresh-frozen and smashed into chunks. At the café I doze in a corner, read the messages and the mail, and unwrap the book I've bought. It's old, old:
