John Tranter (2002) John Tranter Mini-Interview by Coral Hull CH: What book of your own is your favorite and why? JT:
Heart Print, published recently (October 2001) by Salt Publishing in Cambridge England. It's my latest book, and my latest book, whatever that happens to be, is always my favorite. Once a book is published, you can't improve it any more, and the longer you think about it, the more things you see that could have been done better. So you look forward to your next book, which will be perfect; and when that one's published, after a while you look forward to the one after that. Heart Print contains about fifty pages of new work and about the same amount of older poems that haven't yet been published in Britain. For the first thirty years of my writing life I published in Australia and found it impossible to interest a British publisher in taking my work, so there's quite a backlog of poems that have seen print in south of the equator but not elsewhere. I'm not quite sure how the older work sits alongside the new writing. It will be interesting to see the reviews. Sometimes you can learn things from reviews; sometimes not. It depends on how intelligent the reviewer is. And let's face it - if you have the brain of an Einstein, why would you spend your life reviewing slim volumes of verse for peanuts?

John Tranter The Left Hand of Capitalism
Jacket is a 100- to 200-page full-color illustrated quarterly literary magazine distributed to every town, city and country in the world via the Internet and given away for free. Its publisher, Australian poet John Tranter, muses on the contradictions of the brave new electronic world. The cute little feller is called Jacket Jacket might consist of a few minutes worth of browsing, say looking through an interview and a few book reviews in Issue # 4, or a whole evening spent reading through a number of issues. Many of my readers come back often for a regular literary hit; a few land there by accident (scanning the Internet for something cute in dinner jackets, perhaps) and leave immediately, never to return. Jacket In fact I've been involved in editing and publishing poetry books and magazines for over thirty years, on and off. That was in the Age of Print: now, most of what I do ends up on the Internet. The Way We Were: Most of the poetry magazines that were around when I began writing in the early 1960s were printed using metal type and stereo plates on large and costly rotary printing machines weighing a couple of tonnes. In effect we were still in the age of Johannes Gutenberg, who invented moveable metal type over five hundred years ago. The processes were the same: all we had added was a degree of mechanisation.

JOHN TRANTER
John Kinsella: Could you talk about your early years.
John Tranter: I was born in 1943 in Cooma, a little town in the south-eastern mountains of Australia. My father taught in a one-teacher school in the nearby village of Bredbo. It's high country around there, long rolling grassy hills, and pretty much unpopulated. I remember my mother saying that a hot wind blew all summer long, full of dust; in the winter a bitter cold wind, and sometimes snow. We moved to the coastal town of Moruya when I was about four; the climate there was more Californian.
I fell out of the car on the drive to Moruya, late at night. It's almost my earliest memory. On a bend in the dirt road the passenger-side door came open by accident - the car was an old Chevrolet sedan. I'd been asleep in my mother's arms. I fell onto the road and bounced through the blackberries into a ditch. I can still remember staggering to my feet, covered with blood from the gash in my head, and seeing the tail-light disappearing around a bend. It took them a moment or two to realise what had happened, and stop the car. For those few endless seconds it felt very lonely there in the dark.

To me, joy-rides were art, childhood weathered away and wasted, the boy in the threadbare snotty jacket hating us for noticing him thus. . . .
