LETTER FROM BERKELEY
By Calvin Trillin
Published originally in The New Yorker, March 13, 1965 March 3, 1965 ONE A student stopped at the Slate table and, indicating a sign that asked for contributions to the bail fund for the Ad Hoc Committee demonstrators, asked the Slate representative, "Did you hear about the DuBois Club pulling out of the Ad Hoc Committee?" "That's not what happened at all," the Slate representative replied. "The Ad Hoc Committee broke up. They're having a press conference at one o'clock, and Mike Myerson's going to explain it." "Do you expect me to believe any thing in the press?" the student asked. "It's their press conference," said the Slate man. "Mike Myerson is the president of the Ad Hoc Committee." "That doesn't make any difference," said the student, and wandered off. "No, no, no! " the young man exclaimed. "The thing to do now is to picket the grocery stores. Then we sit in at the factories." "Does this money go for political activity ? " a prospective customer asked while I was standing at Rosenfeld's table.

Calvin Trillin, who has something witty and insightful to say about any topic, has distinguished himself in fields of writing that are remarkably diverse. For thirty years, he has reported on the American scene for The New Yorker . His memoir of the fifties, Remembering Denny , was a New York Times bestseller. But he is perhaps best known for his humorin his syndicated newspaper column, in the "Shouts and Murmurs" section of The New Yorker , in his antic adventures as a "happy cater," in the weekly appearances with Johnny Carson and David Letterman.
This original recordinghis firstfeatures Trillin at his most uproarious, reading from his own articles and books. Wonderfully funny and full of surprises, this is a thoroughly satisfying, eminently entertaining, and beautifully crafted collection.

Calvin Tillin unlocks family secrets
By HEATHER MALLICK Toronto Sun
FAMILY MAN
Calvin Trillin
(Farrar Straus Giroux)
What's the secret of happy family life? American humorist Calvin Trillin is a gentleman, so even if his two daughters had sold their kidneys for drug money when they were 17 and ended up in Saudi jails, we wouldn't be reading about it in this clever, touching memoir of marrying and raising kids. Trillin won't be doing a Trevor Grundy either. He never even heard his parents raise their voices to each other.
But whether Trillin has told the whole truth here, or just the nice bits, his story of how he and his kind, intelligent wife Alice raised their two daughters, Abigail and Sarah, is wonderfully soothing. People ask them for advice on bringing up kids. However you do it is fine, Trillin seems to think, but if he can come up with one piece of wisdom on what counts in rearing children, it's this: "Your children are either the centre of your life or they're not, and the rest is commentary."
I gather that you have to adore your kids and boast about them, whether other people like it or not. (Trillin's father used to say to total strangers, "I'll show you a picture of my grandchildren if you promise that you won't go home and throw rocks at your own grandchildren.")

    Acclaimed journalist and author
Calvin Trillin has been acclaimed in fields of writing that are remarkably diverse. As someone who has published solidly reported pieces in The New Yorker for more than thirty years, he has been called "perhaps the finest reporter in America." His antic commentary on the American scene and his books chronicling his adventures as a "happy eater" have earned him renown as "a classic American humorist." His best-selling Remembering Denny , published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux in 1993, was hailed as "an elegiac, disturbing and altogether brilliant memoir."
In 1963 he became a staff writer for The New Yorker . From 1967 to 1982, he produced a highly praised series of articles for The New Yorker called U.S. Journal 3,000-word pieces every three weeks from somewhere in the United States, on subjects that ranged from the murder of a farmer's wife in Iowa to the author's effort to write the definitive history of a Louisiana restaurant called Didee's "or to eat an awful lot of baked duck and dirty rice trying." Some of the murder stories from that series were published in 1984 as Killings, a book that was described by William Geist in the New York Times Book Review as "that rarity, reportage as art."

    Did Bullies Torment Richard Perle?
Calvin Trillin's joke springs to life.
    By Timothy Noah
Updated Thursday, November 21, 2002, at 3:10 PM PT
    Calvin Trillin
writes political doggerel every week for The Nation . On Sept. 16, he published a poem titled " Richard Perle: Whose Fault Is He? " The satirical conceit was that schoolyard bullies who pushed Perle around as a child "have got a lot to answer for,/ 'Cause Richard Perle now wants to start a war." (Perle, who was assistant secretary of defense for international security during the Reagan administration, now chairs the Defense Policy Board , which advises the Pentagon, and is America's leading Iraq hawk.) Imagining the childhood slights suffered by famous political figures is nothing new for Trillin. Years ago he wrote a hilarious Nation column purporting to excerpt Arthur Schlesinger Jr.'s childhood diary: Today I asked those cool Kennedy boys again if I could play in their touch football game on the quad and they said again that I was a wonk and a weenie and a wimp and a grind and walked like a duck. I told them that someday I would be a famous historian and if they ever let me play with them then I would write whatever they wanted. …

  • "Tepper Isn't Going Out" by Calvin Trillin A mild-mannered New Yorker becomes a connoisseur of parking spots and winds up the center of a media circus and the target a Giuliani-esque mayor. By Suzy Hansen "Tepper Isn't Going Out" is a typical New York story. Murray Tepper, an average small-business owner, gentle husband and loving father, spends his nights casing Manhattan neighborhoods for the perfect parking spot. It doesn't matter that he owns a space in a parking garage or that his wife and friends consider his behavior worrisome or that other angry drivers, truly desperate for a space near the theater, are reaming him out and honking wildly. Tepper dismisses them with a wave or a nod and returns to his newspaper simply because it's a damn good spot, and he found it, and, well, the sign says he can stay. That's the premise of Calvin Trillin's warmhearted and completely hilarious new book. Tepper is a likable guy, if only because he's reassuringly uncomplicated. "There were nights when he could almost imagine himself with a large tattoo on his arm that said 'Born to Park,'" Trillin writes. Of all the big dreams in the big city, competitive parking has to be one of the sweetest.

Calvin Trillin: British 'out of practice' on invasions
Humorist Calvin Trillin Editor's Note: CNN Access is a regular feature on CNN.com providing interviews with newsmakers from around the world. (CNN) After storming a beach near the British colony of Gibraltar as part of a military training exercise, about 20 British Royal Marines learned they had missed their mark. Informed by locals that they had accidentally landed on Spanish soil, the heavily armed British combat troops retreated to their landing craft without incident, but with more than a little embarrassment. The timing wasn't great either; Spain and Britain are in negotiations over the future of Gibraltar. CNN's Anderson Cooper discussed the Sunday "invasion" with essayist and humorist Calvin Trillin.

    75. Interviews - Calvin Trillin
The author of 19 books ranging from serious journalism to comic novels trillin has been a staff writer for the NEW YORKER for 35 years.

    var previous_on = new Image(129,11); previous_on.src = "images/n-ff-previous_roll.gif"; var previous_off = new Image(129,11); previous_off.src = "images/n-ff-previous.gif"; var next_on = new Image(129,11); next_on.src = "images/n-ff-next_roll.gif"; var next_off = new Image(129,11); next_off.src = "images/n-ff-next.gif";
    On Complaining:
I wrote a piece in the NEW YORKER once about the renovation of our subway stop, the subway station on Sheridan Square, and I said it's given us a new problem, they renovated in a beautiful way and we can't find anything to complain about. My theory was that in the same way people used to say that Eskimos had 58 words for snow, New Yorkers have maybe 60 or 70 words for complaint and two phrases for approval "not so bad" and "it could be worse."
    On Attitude:
    On Mayors:

I think everybody's favorite politician was La Guardia, I mean I suspect that there's some historian somewhere who can tell me that actually everything I think about La Guardia is a misapprehension based on the idea that he read the funnies on the radio to people during the newspaper strike, but . . . I think that one of the things about him was, he was combative, and I think being combative is sort of part of the New York style, that I think people in New York appreciate. In general, I think people appreciate mayors who are sort of characters. I suspect in modern times people realize that there's no way to govern the cities anyway, so you might as well have somebody entertaining.

    Remembering Denny, by Calvin Trillin
'Remembering Denny' is part memoir, part investigative report, part elegy, and part meditation on what success means, or used to. The prism for all these is Denny Hansen, an all-American Rhodes scholar and classmate of Trillin's, whose graduation from Yale in the 1950s was featured in the old Life magazine. Denny did not live up to his promise, and committed suicide at 45. Trillin records his own efforts to piece together where the road led, and why. The book is not so much about Denny (indeed Trillin concedes the impossibility of knowing him), as about the fortunes of the ideal Denny seemed to embody. Trillin's book has all the hallmark virtues of New Yorker-style writing: lucid, organized, nothing too flashy but obviously quality. Seams neatly pressed, it's the prose equivalent of a fresh new Brooks Brother shirt. It's prose you can breath in, all right, and the perfect voice in which to explore from within the 1950s cult of Ivy league and (white) manhood. That was also the aspect that underlined my own distance from the subject: the description of the rituals of and snobberies of Yale fraternities, for instance, were to me as foreign as a disquisition upon the bathing rituals of 12th century Tibet.
