Trollope, Anthony The Fixed Period
Genre Novel (403 pp.) Keywords Aging Colonialism Death and Dying Developing Countries ... Time Summary In the late 20th century, Britannula, an island near New Zealand, has achieved its independence from Great Britain. Settled by a group of young men some 30 years before the action of this novel, Britannula has developed into a prosperous land governed by a President and a single-house legislative body, the Assembly. They have adopted a great social experiment called the "Fixed Period," by which the society and its citizens will avoid the suffering, decrepitude, and expense of old age. At age 67 each person will be "deposited" into a lovely, carefree "college" (Necropolis) where he or she will spend one delightful year before being euthanized. The story takes place just as the time approaches for Gabriel Crasweller, a wealthy landowner and good friend of President Neverbend, to be deposited. Crasweller is the first citizen to have lived out his Fixed Period, and the President, whose brainchild the Fixed Period is, experiences a conflict between his love for Craswellerwho inexplicably does not want to dieand his determination to carry out the law. Mounting resistance to the Fixed Period among the older citizens (including his wife) also surprises Neverbend, although the Assembly, composed mostly of young people, reaffirms the law. Just as Crasweller is led off to Necropolis, a British gunship arrives in port to relieve Neverbend of his duties as President and re-establish direct control of Britannula.

... Previous Chapter The Warden by Anthony Trollope Chapter II. The Barchester Reformer
The Barchester Reformer Mr Harding has been now precentor of Barchester for ten years; and, alas, the murmurs respecting the proceeds of Hiram's estate are again becoming audible. It is not that any one begrudges to Mr Harding the income which he enjoys, and the comfortable place which so well becomes him; but such matters have begun to be talked of in various parts of England. Eager pushing politicians have asserted in the House of Commons, with very telling indignation, that the grasping priests of the Church of England are gorged with the wealth which the charity of former times has left for the solace of the aged, or the education of the young. The well-known case of the Hospital of St Cross has even come before the law courts of the country, and the struggles of Mr Whiston, at Rochester, have met with sympathy and support. Men are beginning to say that these things must be looked into. John Bold is a young surgeon, who passed many of his boyish years at Barchester. His father was a physician in the city of London, where he made a moderate fortune, which he invested in houses in that city. The Dragon of Wantly inn and posting- house belonged to him, also four shops in the High Street, and a moiety of the new row of genteel villas (so called in the advertisements), built outside the town just beyond Hiram's Hospital. To one of these Dr Bold retired to spend the evening of his life, and to die; and here his son John spent his holidays, and afterwards his Christmas vacation when he went from school to study surgery in the London hospitals. Just as John Bold was entitled to write himself surgeon and apothecary, old Dr Bold died, leaving his Barchester property to his son, and a certain sum in the three per cents. to his daughter Mary, who is some four or five years older than her brother.

    Anthony Trollope (1815-82)
British novelist, and by profession, postal worker. He was known for the depth of his characterizations and the insights his novels provide into Victorian society. His first novel, "The Macdermots of Ballycloran" (1847), was written while serving in Ireland with the Postal Service. There, he met and married Rose Heseltine, and English girl, in 1844.
Trollope's first success, although it wasn't recognized as such until later, was "The Warden" (1855), the idea for which struck him while on a stroll around Salisbury Cathedral one summer day. Out of this grew the "Chronicles of Barsetshire", a six volume sequence of novels centering around the fictitious cathedral town of Barchester, in the equally fictitious county of Barsetshire. The other novels in the series, with their recurring characters presented in familiar settings, are: "Barchester Towers" (1857), "Doctor Thorne" (1858), "Framley Parsonage" (1860), "The Small House at Allington" (1862-4) and "The Last Chronicle of Barset" (1866-7).
In 1867, Trollope resigned from the Post Office, and in 1868 ran unsuccessfully for political office. He relates his political experiences in "Ralph the Heir", (1870-1). By this time, his financial success was assured and he was firmly ensconced in London literary society.

Anthony Trollope combined his successful career as a popular novelist with that of a Post Office official. The latter job took him not only all over the British Isles but also to North and Central America; his services as a Post Office consultant were sought as far afield as Chicago and Costa Rica. He was also responsible for the introduction of the familiar British red pillar box.
His postal career began in Ireland, the scene of his first two novels, but he later worked all over Great Britain gaining a detailed acquaintance with the towns and countryside of the whole island. This is reflected in his works, the settings of which in a unique way cover a wide geographical area stretching from Scotland to the West of England.
He also hunted at least twice a week and this meant that, given his professional commitments, most of his writing had to be done in the very early morning before he left for the business of the day. He was also active for a time in politics and stood unsuccessfully for election as a Liberal in the town of Beverley in Yorkshire.
Most of his novels fall naturally into three groups:
The Irish novels dealing with social and political life in the Irish countryside that he knew well.
