And what could I say? They were wonderful . Her breasts were round and white and everything you'd expect from a beautiful woman. I couldn't believe she asked me, as if I could have thought otherwise. I'd never been with someone like her before. I was terrified. But she seemed shy and even unsure about herself. I didn't understand that at all. What did she see in me ? She had of course looked at herself. Everyone I knew had looked at her. I heard all the comments about her, wishful comments. But with me she was just playful and tentative. I kissed her, looked out the window of my mother's Buick Regal. She pressed against me and unzipped her skirt. She She told me, after we were relaxing in the back seat, that she had had sex only once before. Only once. She told me that an older man, a semi-boyfriend, had forced her to do it with him, pushed her down, taken off her clothes. She said she didn't mind too much. She said she sort of wanted to. She wanted the experience with an older man. She wanted to be ready for when she got married. Now she wasn't sure she would ever get married. Now she was the older one, but she didn't really act that way. She was shy, I tell you. I didn't know why, but I got angry. Maybe the East Coast did that to you. I told her not to let a man do that to her again. Ever. It wasn't as if I had been trying to score PC points to "nail" her, as they said so crudely in Amherst. We were already completely naked, both of us quite happy. I told her it was terrible what he had done to her, I told her as vehemently as I could. She was way too shy for her own good. She became embarrassed, and I backed off. I told her it really wasn't her fault. But I also told her that anybody who did that to her was a fucking macho bastard. Was I going out of my mind? Mr. Goody Goody. Where did

Get me that other wire over there," Joe demanded and pulled Chuy up to his feet and pushed him down the ditch tunnel toward the station wagon and the slimy green water full of tadpoles and such. "We're gonna tie the re-tard to the Buick, we're gonna tie his legs." Joe slapped Chuy on top of his head, but it wasn't a hard slap. "So he can't run away. What good's a prisoner if he runs away?" I said, grabbing the tumbleweed stems behind me and closing up the entrance. The morning had been way too hot already. There weren't any mosquitoes buzzing yet. The ditch was full of big black shiny flies, the kind that land on dogshit and eat it. Two of 'em buzzed my head, and I jumped back. Hell, I didn't want any shit flies on me. "Araaaayia! Araaaayia! Araaayiump!" "Shut up, damn it. Shut the fuck up," Joe said. "Araaaayia! Araaayiump!" "Turi, shut him up! Somebody'll hear him," Joe said. He was getting angry. He had that bored look in his eyes, the one before he lunged at whoever was in his face. Steady eyes above a slight smile, his shoulders and arms straight like a tight coil.

25. A Day Without Ideas --by Sergio Troncoso (sergiotroncoso.com)

E-mail A Day Without Ideas By Sergio Troncoso Drawings by Jorge Enciso I imagine that one morning I will wake up and have no ideas. One morning I will wake up and only see my wife slowly getting out of bed, just a few seconds before me. I will only see a tired woman rushing to make my son's lunch. Maybe I will also see her take a shower before she answers the calls of my other son, the baby. The little one sometimes sings in his crib, and one morning, maybe, I will only hear the sounds that woke me up. I will not hear him. I will not laugh at his attempt at melody. I will not see the brave woman who gets up to take care of him. I will not see anything at all but a tired world, a materialistic world, a quiet world, a non-world. My eyes will function, but I will not see much. On this day without ideas, I will probably not even call my wife just to hear her voice, even though I know she is busy at work. What would be the point of it? I know she took her Tamoxifen. I know she feels okay. Her hair has grown back, and is downy soft after the chemotherapy. Often when I call, there is really nothing important to say. We talk for a while. We talk about nice things. We tell each other we miss the other one. But it's rarely more than that. On this day I imagine, this day without ideas, I may not call at all unless I have something really important to say. I may even consider this call a waste of time. So on this day, when it finally ends, after the children have taken their baths and they are falling asleep in their colorful room full of dinosaurs and lions and trains and puzzles and books, dozens and dozens of books, too many books, I will not sneak back in to hear them breathing. On this day, they are simply breathing. That is one of the things children do best. They breathe. Especially at night while they sleep. So on this day, as it turns into a dark night, my children will breathe, and I will not be sitting in the darkness hearing this wonderful sound like some nocturnal Buddha. It will simply be breathing, and I will not find it boring or exciting at all. It will simply be there, and I will not care. I will simply be there. On this day without ideas.

27. Why Should Latinos Write Their Own Stories? --by Sergio Troncoso (sergiotroncoso
An essay, by sergio troncoso, about preserving and challenging cultural heritage.
http://hometown.aol.com/ysleta/latinos/index.htm
htmlAdWH('7002928', '120', '30'); htmlAdWH('7002097', '234', '60'); Main Create Edit Help ... E-mail Why Should Latinos Write Their Own Stories? By Sergio Troncoso Drawings by Jorge Enciso W hy should Latinos write their own stories? Why should I write stories about Ysleta and El Paso, Texas? The first and probably most important answer to this question is that we write stories about our community to preserve our heritage. But we should also write stories that challenge this beloved heritage. I think we should be proud of who we are, but we should also be self-critical and reflective about what we might want to be in the future. Most importantly, we write stories about our community to preserve our heritage. The very first story I wrote, for example, "The Abuelita," is really the most autobiographical story in The Last Tortilla and Other Stories So in many different ways, we can write stories to preserve the memory of our familias and to remember our old neighborhood. We will always belong in this family and in this place in a way that we will never belong with anyone or anywhere else. It is our duty to preserve this heritage and to affirm it and even to celebrate it by writing stories about where we belong. We have a great culture right here on the Mexican-American border. We have a great heritage in Ysleta and El Paso. There is no need to look somewhere else for approval or for higher standards. We have strong families here. Our people are tied to the land. We are for the most part direct and honest. It is true that there are some cabrones here and there. But we are not yet lost in the world. We still do have more civility than hostility toward a stranger. Most of us still believe in something holy. And let me tell you, that is not the case in many places outside of Ysleta and El Paso. In too many places. Sometimes it takes leaving El Paso for a while to appreciate what we do have here. So when you are seeing these hundreds of miles of empty desert between you and the rest of the world, you should not feel isolated or out of touch. You should feel lucky.

29. Beyond Aztlan: Chicanos In The Ivy League --by Sergio Troncoso (sergiotroncoso.c
An essay about Chicanos finding their way back home, by sergio troncoso.
http://hometown.aol.com/ysleta/chicanos/index.htm
Home Stories and Essays News Articles and Interviews Appearances ... E-mail By Sergio Troncoso Drawings by Jorge Enciso 'C We have changed. Chicanas and Chicanos in the Ivy League son los mas chingones. There's no question about that. But after our travels and travails, we may also be the ones with the most questions about who we are. Not all Chicanos go through the cultural adjustment trauma that I experienced. But some still do, and probably some always will. When I went to Harvard, I wasn't a sophisticated Chicano from LA. I certainly wasn't a sophisticated Mexican-American from Houston or San Antonio. I wasn't even a sophisticated Mexicano from El Paso. I was from Ysleta, a colonia on the rural outskirts of El Paso. At one time, my family had an outhouse in the backyard, and instead of electricity, we had kerosene lamps and stoves. When I arrived at Harvard Square, which I thought was a public park instead of the center of the university, I was hungry, but for ideas. I was wild with passion, but for reading. I was a dangerous, don't-even- think -about-messin'-with-me savage. That's why I majored in Political Science.

Paper (0-8165-1961-7) $18.95 Winner of the 1999 Premio Aztlan for the best book by an emerging Chicano writer Publishers Weekly Booklist Bloomsbury Review "The stories in The Last Tortilla "She asked me if I liked them. And what could I say? They were wonderful." From the very beginning of Sergio Troncoso's celebrated story "Angie Luna," we know we are in the hands of a gifted storyteller. Born of Mexican immigrants, raised in El Paso, and now living in New York City, Troncoso has a rare knack for celebrating life. Writing in a straightforward, light-handed style reminiscent of Grace Paley and Raymond Carver, he spins charming tales that reflect his experiences in two worlds. Troncoso's El Paso is a normal town where common people who happen to be Mexican eat, sleep, fall in love, and undergo epiphanies just like everyone else. His tales are coming-of-age stories from the Mexican-American border, stories of the working class, stories of those coping with the trials of growing old in a rapidly changing society. He also explores New York with vignettes of life in the big city, capturing its loneliness and danger. Beginning with Troncoso's widely acclaimed story "Angie Luna," the tale of a feverish love affair in which a young man rediscovers his Mexican heritage and learns how much love can hurt, these stories delve into the many dimensions of the human condition. We watch boys playing a game that begins innocently but takes a dangerous turn. We see an old Anglo woman befriending her Mexican gardener because both are lonely. We witness a man terrorized in his New York apartment, taking solace in memories of lost love.
