Today's Book Authors Subjects
Good Books:
Eccles, John C. The Physiology of Synapses. Springer Verlag, 1964.
The late Sir John Eccles practically invented the science of the synapse, and in rough outlines he also came close to perfecting it. But basic neurology was not his only profession. If you want to see the difference between a savant and a technician, compare Eccles' urbane arguments with Karl Popper ( The Self and Its Brain ) with the narrowmindedness of R. A. Nicoll's obituary for Eccles in Science (V. 277, no. 5323, 11 July 1997, p 194). Nicoll will never understand why people are so angry; Eccles would have, and so did Maimonides.
It could be that today the average undergraduate already knows the main points of the revolutionary discoveries of the 1950s, but this book is still a well organized summary of the neurology of the single neuron, and even more so of the synapse. It is also an example which a layman can understand of real science and real science-publishing.

Worksheet Two: PALS: Learning the basics CSS Library Online Lab Contact your instructor Sample worksheet FAQs, tips, etc MARC RECORDS: OVERVIEW Despite the image of sensible shoes and hair-in-a bun, librarians are often forward-thinking trend-setters. In the late '60s librarians devised a system by which the traditional library catalog (or database) could be searched by computer. In order for this to happen, the traditional paper card had to be represented in a form the computer could read. This is how the MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) record was developed. To better understand this, and to make you a better database searcher (whether in a library catalog or on the Internet) you need to understand how a database such as a card catalog is set up. Books are physical objects. Earlier, you read about call numbers and how the call number represents what the book is about and how it gives a book a unique, physical place to reside in a library. The catalog, made up of MARC records, is a representation of the physical book also. This representation consists of such things as the title, the author, the publisher, the date of publication, the number of pages, the subject of the book, etc. When this representation, or description, of the book used to be typed on cards each piece of information appeared on a specific line of the card. This "stylized" representation created ease of use - one always knew wear to look on the card to find the author's name, or the title. This same stylized representation was carried over to the computer, but instead of the information being typed on a specific line, it was entered into a specific "field."

54. Barbara Tuchman: De Kanonnen Van Augustus
http://web.inter.nl.net/hcc/Her.Jansen/tuchman.htm
Omslagtekst uitgave H.J.

Barbara Tuchman
Historian Barbara Tuchman (1912-1989)
Barbara Tuchman The Nation , a magazine owned by her father. Barbara traveled to Spain to cover the Spanish Civil War and supplied articles not only to The Nation , but to several other publications as well. In response to the Loyalists' victory in Spain, which she viewed as the end of the liberal world, Barbara published her first book, The Lost British Policy . Soon after, she married and devoted the next several years to raising her three daughters. Once her children were older, Barbara was free to indulge her love for historical research and published books in 1956 and 1958. But it was 1962's The Guns of August Stilwell and the American Experience in China, 1911-45 , a study of the United States' relationship with 20th-century China. In all, Barbara wrote 11 books, including a lively look at 14th century France, called A Distant Mirror . She understood that the only way to make historical nonfiction readable is to tell it as a story. She once told an audience, "the writer's object should be to hold the reader's attention. I want the reader to turn the page and keep on turning until the end. This is accomplished only when the narrative moves steadily ahead, not when it comes to a weary standstill, overloaded with every item uncovered in the research." Barbara was born on January 30, 1912, and died on February 6, 1989. Books by Barbara Tuchman Subscribe to Women's Stories!

Barbara Tuchman
I love history. Tuchman understands those of us who love love history, but aren't historians. She knows the lure of reading about past times and fully imagining life for those who lived then. It's not the facts or dates we want. We want to, for a time, be the person who rode out of Paris to go on a Crusade, and rode past serfs tilling the land, dressed in browns and blacks because they were forbidden to wear bright colors by law. We want to feel the pride of being French, thinking that we could defeat the German army because, we are FRENCH!. But alas, the Germans crush us anyway. What did we feel then?
Tuchman tells history as a story, and makes us feel the wonder of the connection we have with all the myriad, strange, and beautiful humans who have lived and died to bring us to where we are today.
