Mail box for papers, messages, etc.: FAC 257 "I will tell you something about stories....They aren't just entertainment. Don't be fooled." - Leslie Marmon Silko This class will take an interdisciplinary focus on the relationship between folklore, literature and film. We will look at folklore (including narrative, poetry and theater) as literature, and at the uses and transformations of various kinds of folklore in literature. We will look at folktales, oral poetry and other folk literature; writers in the Western literary "canon" such as Shakespeare and James Baldwin; fantasy and horror writers such as Ursula K. LeGuin and H.P. Lovecraft; "Native" writers such as Amos Tutuola and James Welch; children's literature; and ethnographic writers such as Loren Eiseley and Zora Neale Hurston. We will also look at the use of folklore in such films as "Star Wars", "Black Orpheus" and "Ran". Readings are primarily folklore and/or literary texts which will be discussed in class. We will use a variety of theoretical approaches. I reserve the right to make changes in the class schedule as needed, but I will not add writing assignments or exams. I may give a pop quiz if I think students are not keeping up with assignments. I will not change exam dates, and in the event that I change due dates on readings or papers, I will make them due later, not earlier.

And all of a sudden I saw that the hole didn't go all the way through, and I said to myself what luck! But then that same night, as I was sleeping in the hole in the trunk, guess who turned up? A kind of prowler, some sort of strange ghostly wanderer. He makes to get into the same hole, but then he catches sight of me! So what does he do? He blocks up the hole real tight, so I can't get out, then whap! he puts the trunk on his head and off he goes, carrying everythingthe tree, the trunk, the hole, and me inside." UNDER AFRICAN SKIES: MODERN AFRICAN STORIES By Charles R. Larson
(C) 1997 Charles R. Larson
ISBN: 0-374-17659-0 Books Etc. Review CHAPTER ONE: Amos Tutuola
(Born 1920) Nigeria)
Amos Tutuola's writing career began in 1948, when he mailed The Wild Hunter in the Bush of Ghosts to the Focal Press in London. In an earlier letter, Tutuola had described the ghost narrative, claiming that the text would be accompanied by photographs of Nigerian spirits. According to Bernth Lindfors, when the Focal Press received the work, "the 77-page handwritten manuscript had been wrapped in brown paper, rolled up like a magazine, bound with twine, and sent via surface mail. When the sixteen negatives accompanying it were developed, all but one turned out to be snapshots of hand-drawn sketches of spirits and other phenomena featured in the story. Tutuola had hired a schoolboy to draw these illustrations and had photographed them. He had also included a photograph of a human being sitting by the lagoon in Lagos because he felt that she adequately represented `the old woman who sat near the river' in the story." In Tutuola's enchanting narrative, there are illegitimate and cannibalistic ghosts, a sixteen-headed ghost, and a Salvation Army ghost, plus an educated ghost who teaches the narrator to read and write. More disturbing, the Yoruba afterworld (the domain of the spirits described in the story) has become fully bureaucratic, so complicated in its red tape that it's surprising that anyone ever passes on.
