William Tyndale By Dr. Herbert Samworth On the surface there would have been little reason to think that the birth of a child in Slimbridge, Gloustershire, England in 1494 would change English history. However, that child, William Tyndale, would later translate and print the Word of God in the English vernacular and the impact of that translation is still felt today. Although few recognized it at the time, the dawning of a new day began with the recovery of the Greek language and its application to Biblical studies. In 1499 Erasmus of Rotterdam, the great humanist, arrived at Oxford University. Although Erasmus enjoyed an international reputation as a scholar, it appears that when he landed in England he was still ignorant of the Greek language. At Oxford were Thomas Linacre and John Colet who urged him to undertake its learning. Colet himself was lecturing on the Epistles of Paul and his studies brought a vibrancy to the text that contrasted sharply with the sterility associated with the Scholastic method of teaching. After his time at Oxford, Erasmus departed for the European continent to pursue the study of Greek. That pursuit reached its climax in 1516 when the pages of the

William was sent to Oxford at an early age, perhaps as early as 1508. He was ordained priest. He was proficient in Latin and Greek and was able to read the Bible for himself. Later William had the opportunity to study Hebrew, which was an added aid to his accuracy in translating. William Tyndale longed to liberalize and reform the Church from priestly arrogance and corrupt teaching. Not only in England was this felt - in Italy the eloquence and teaching of the greatly loved reformer Savonarola was gaining support and in Germany Martin Luther. Tyndale and the other reformers of his day realized all too well how great was the danger and how real would be the penalty if he followed his resolved intention. William Tyndale became a chaplain to 'Master Walsh, a knight of Gloucestershire' and his household, and tutor to his children and for a time lived with the family at the Manor House at Little Sodbury. During his stay he had been busy with translations. Shortly before leaving for London he had preached to a large congregation on College Green in Bristol, where the common people heard him gladly, by this time the people were to question what they had previously been taught by the priests. William was summoned to appear before Lord Abbot at Gloucester, who accused him if disturbing the peace and preaching rank heresy. No charge was made against him. Shortly after the trial William left for London, where he hoped to gain support from the Bishop Tunstal for permission to produce a Bible in English.

"Review of William Tyndale: A Biography Early Modern Literary Studies Early Modern Literary Studies EMLS Daniell's biography is divided into five sections: "The Making of the Translator" (chapters 1-3), "Greek into English" (chapters 4-6), "Persecution and Polemics" (chapters 7-10), "Hebrew and the Old and New Testaments" (chapters 11-13), and "Martyr" (chapters 14-15). The first four chapters of the biography, which deal with Tyndale's life before 1524, are necessarily highly speculative, since what we know of Tyndale's early life can be found in a couple of pages in Foxe's Book of Martyrs , and in a page or two of Tyndale's own Preface to his translation of the Pentateuch. In these early chapters Daniell gives some background on life in late medieval Gloucestershire (chapter 1), where Tyndale was born, and on the state of theological studies in Oxford and Cambridge (chapter 2 and beginning of 3), where Tyndale studied and lived. The sickness of our culture was manifested in early December when Winston Churchill only narrowly beat Lady Diana the Princess of Wales into second place for the title, "The Greatest Englishman.' William Tyndale came nowhere in the top fifty and yet transcends even Churchill to this title. Erroll Hulse in the current Reformation Today (www.reformation-today.org) gives us this delightful and succinct summary of the great Englishman's life: The first Englishman to write a book to explain to his fellow countrymen how they should live in this world was William Tyndale. His book was called The Obedience of a Christian Man (Penguin, 230pp) and was first published in 1528. The Penguin edition is wonderfully introduced by David Daniell who has written a superlative definitive biography of Tyndale (Yale University, 428 pp., 1994). William Tyndale was born in Gloucestershire in 1494. For about ten years he studied at Magdalen Hall, Oxford, a college with a reputation for advanced studies in Latin and Greek. He was ordained into the Roman Catholic Church which then reigned supreme. Tyndale returned to Gloucestershire to serve as tutor to the children of Sir John and Lady Walsh. It was about this time that Tyndale was taunted by an ignorant priest stuck in tradition and opposed to Scripture. Tyndale responded, 'If God spare my life, ere many years I will cause that a boy that driveth the plough shall know more of the Scriptures than thou dost.' In this resolve his prayers were answered and he was given success.
