23. SIGRID UNDSET
SIGRID UNDSET (1882 1949) 1928 The Nobel Prize for Literature. I noticed thisin connection with my biography of Sigrid Undset, published in 1989.

SIGRID UNDSET (1882 - 1949)
1928 The Nobel Prize for Literature Both these novels about the Middle Ages, in particular "Kristin Lavransdatter", became international bestsellers at the time. According to Alfred Nobel´s will, the Literature Prize is to be awarded to the author who has written "the most outstanding work of an idealistic tendency", and so Undset´s books fell within this somewhat elastic category. But it was Sigrid Undset´s talent as a great story-teller rather than the idealistic tendency which fascinated her readers all over the world. Her books had been translated into the most important foreign languages even before she received the Nobel Prize. After 1928, they were published in virtually every major language. Now, after a lapse of 70 years, her books are still being read worldwide, by new generations of readers. Outside Norway, her reputation has been mostly confined to "Kristin Lavransdatter". Not so in Norway. I noticed this in connection with my biography of Sigrid Undset, published in 1989. I have received letters from women and men, old and young, from every part of Norway, showing that she is being read, by an increasing number of people - in this age of television. Who was Sigrid Undset? It might be worth mentioning that Sigrid Undset was born the same year as Virginia Woolf and James Joyce, three years before D.H. Lawrence and Karen Blixen. From the literary point of view, none of these were of importance to her personally, except D.H. Lawrence, whose work greatly interested her in the 1930s. But they all belong to the same generation; they are contemporaries, each one in his/her own corner of Europe. Their respective authorships did indeed develop along very different lines, but they do have one thing in common: they are the children of a Europe in crisis, and they are very conscious of it.

Portrait of the author Sigrid Undset painted in 1911 by her husband Anders Castus Svarstad. She is best known for her historical novel "Kristin Lavransdatter". For this Middle Age trilogy she received the 1928 Nobel Prize in literature. She gave the money from this prize to help families with disabled children. Among many other famous books are "Jenny", "The Master of Hestviken", "The Faithful Wife" and "Madame Dorthea". Many of her novels deal with problems about regret and guilt. She converted to Roman Catholicism although she was first generation of emancipated women. Undset early stood up against the Nazism because of its contempt for weakness and had to live in USA during the German occupation of Norway.

34. CIN - Christmas And Epiphany By Sigrid Undset
Article written by sigrid undset. Hosted by the Catholic Information Network.
http://www.cin.org/liter/undsxmas.html
SIGRID UNDSET Christmas and Epiphany Christmas was the greatest event in the life of Our Lady; it is the reason why she has been honored and will be honored by countless generations until the end of time. The well-known Norwegian novelist (1882-1949) touches upon some of the aspects of this profound theme in the following selection. From our Lord's Birthday until Epiphany the Church keeps Christmas. The five joyful mysteries of the rosary, the antiphons and the prayers in the offices for Christmas, are the central point of our worship. Near the altar where He Himself lives clothed in the white garb of the Host, and where His mark, the crucifix, is placed over the tabernacle, there is now a crib-a little picture of the stable where the Word who became Flesh first opened His infant eyes. And round the little figure of the Christ Child stands the likeness of the first things and the first people who met His glance when He by whom all things were made came to His own in the form of a servant. The crib is not meant only to be a picture of a room where a Jewish ! carpenter and a young woman sought shelter for the night-a night nineteen hundred odd years ago. For so little did the world take account of what came to pass that night so long ago, in the outhouse of the caravanserai at Bethlehem, that no one definitely knows the year in which it happened or at what time of the year; and indeed during the first centuries after Christ's birth opinion is so divided that there is scarcely a month that has not been suggested as the actual Christmas month.

36. Sigrid Undset - Autobiography
sigrid undset – Autobiography. My father's family came from Østerdalen. Since1919, I have lived in Lillehammer. Biographical note on sigrid undset.
http://www.nobel.se/literature/laureates/1928/undset-autobio.html
My father, Ingvald Martin Undset, obtained his doctorate in 1881 with a thesis on The Beginnings of the Iron Age in Northern Europe
My mother had no choice but to send me to a commercial school in Christiania. I did not like it there but it had one great advantage over my old school; no one there expected me to like anything!
Later on, I went to work in an office and learned among other lessons to do things I did not care for, and to do them well. I remained there for ten years - from the age of 17 until I was 27. Before I left this office, two of my books had already been published - Fru Marte Oulie in 1907, and Den lykkelige alder (The Happy Age) in 1908. After leaving the office job, I went to Germany and Italy on a scholarship.
I have published a number of books since, my last two novels being set in the Middle Ages. They are Kristin Lavransdatter , which appeared in three volumes (192O-1922): Kransen (The Garland) Husfrue (The Mistress of Husaby) Korset (The Cross) ; and The Master of Hestviken ] and its sequel
In 1912, I was married in Belgium to the Norwegian painter A. C. Svarstad. I was received into the Roman Catholic Church in 1924, and my marriage was then dissolved, since my husband had earlier been married to a woman who is still living. We have three children.

Undset, Sigrid
Sigrid Undset By courtesy of the Royal Norwegian Embassy, London (b. May 20, 1882, Kalundborg, Den.d. June 10, 1949, Lillehammer, Nor.), Norwegian novelist who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928. Her father was an archaeologist, and her home life was steeped in legend, folklore, and the history of Norway. Both this influence and her own life story are constantly present in her worksfrom Elleve aar Eleven Years ), in which she tells of her childhood, to the story of her flight from Nazi-occupied Norway, published originally in English as Return to the Future (1942; Norwegian Tillbake til fremtiden She worked in the office of an electrical engineering firm for 10 years before she married, bore children, and began to write. Her early novels deal with the position of women in the contemporary unromantic world of the lower middle class. These include Splinten av troldspeilet Images in a Mirror ) and Jenny (1911). She then turned to the distant past and created what is considered her masterpiece, the trilogy Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-22). Though the medieval climate of the novel is strikingly evoked, it is still a story of a woman's fate, portraying the proud, independent Kristin's growth, through her marriage to a charming but irresponsible man, into a strong but humble and self-sacrificing woman. Both in this and in the four-volume historical novel
