"Henri always says that brilliance is moving towards colour, not towards white," says Austin Fraser to the eccentric Abbott Thayer. Yet, in his own life and in his painting he seeks colours which camouflage and conceal him just as surely as Thayer's blue jay becomes invisible in shadowed snow. Always, Fraser has refused to look beneath surface appearances, to feel emotions, to be curious about people or to open himself, in any way, to the world. Like the 'erasures' he creates in his art, his life is scraped back and hidden beneath multiple surface layers. As in his art, life becomes disturbing only when some covered fragments seep through. Yet it is not these seeped, blurred fragments of Fraser's life which disturb the reader as he tell his story, but the absences, the subtle emotions and connections which he ignores but which grow in the reader's mind so that we begin to question Fraser's humanity, to imagine the feelings of those whose lives he affects, and to judge him. In the end, we can only agree with his own self-assessment of what his life has been: "You have used everything around you. And for what? An arrangement of colours on a flat surface". This book, however, is far more than a flat arrangement of colours. From the opening lines of the book, I found myself seduced by Urquhart's writing in a way I couldn't quite managed to explain. Her clear vision is reflected in language which is plain and quite ordinary, yet her art is subtle, delicate, multi-faceted and very moving. It is an art of shifting light and shade, as Fraser's tries to be, but her engagement with humanity is deep and she uses the language of painting in a sensual and erotic way which her narrator could never achieve.

Jane Urquhart Diary Donated to the
University of Waterloo Library
UW President James Downey and author Jane Urquhart (seated) are seen here comparing the original copy of her diary with the presentation facsimile prepared as a part of the preservation process. In commenting on the gift, Susan Saunders Bellingham, Head, Special Collections (standing) said that the diary will be of great interest to both students in literature and women's studies and will also be "a fine complement to the papers of Urquhart's husband, artist Tony Urquhart which are already housed in the Doris Lewis Rare Book Room." Pictured above are two pages from the recently-donated diary of Jane Urquhart. Presentative of the contents of the complete diary, these pages from 1975 feature photos, programs, labels, a telegram, and diary entries.
for larger views.] A series of "title-pages" by Hugh MacKenzie, a marriage license, exotic and colourful wine labels, tiny photographs of French graveyards, restaurant menus, and postcards are among the many fascinating items included in the pages of writer Jane Urquhart's diary. Covering the period from 1974 to 1979a time that Ms. Urquhart describes as preceding her writing careerthe 258-page diary has been donated to the Doris Lewis Rare Book Room at the University of Waterloo Library by Ms. Urquhart, winner of the 1997 Governor General's Award for her novel The Underpainter. Jane Urquhart describes this diarywhich also served as a sketchbook, journal, and trip diaryas her "best one" in that it shows her collaborative work with her husband, artist Tony Urquhart. The many sketches and drawings by Tony Urquhart that are included make this diary not unlike his series of "idea books" which form one of the most important portions of his personal papers and archives, also housed in the Doris Lewis Rare Book Room. The complementary nature of her diary with her husband's series of idea books prompted Ms. Urquhart to feel that this particular volume was well-suited to be added to the existing research collections in the Library. Ms. Urquhart further commented that it was important to her to have a portion of her original materials in the University of Waterloo Library because "Without the UW Library I couldn't have written the books I have . . . . I really feel at home there."

Jane Urquhart: A Portrait of Success
By Jess Merber, Varsity Staff
“Oh hello, this is Jane Urquhart.”
I was expecting her call, but it still caused my hands to shake. After all, this was the author of The Whirlpool in 1986, Changing Heaven in 1990, Away in 1993 and this year’s The Underpainter—not to mention the 1997 Governor-General’s award winner for fiction. And she’s on the telephone. And I’m nervous. Urquhart, however, is not. She sounds relaxed and interested in our conversation; I begin to feel like a guest made at home by a host. I should have suspected as much from Urquhart from her reading at Hart House in support of PEN Canada a few days prior to the call. Along with Margaret Gibson and Nino Ricci, Urquhart read from her recent work, charming the audience with her words and her manner. She warned the audience that the evening of the reading "just might be the time my eyes give out forever" and she was to be excused if she left the podium to retrieve her new eyeglasses. She prefaced her discussion with, "It's another strange one, no question about it." Urquhart was referring to her signature lyrical style and her tendency to write about centuries past, whether it be Niagara Falls in the 19th century, the ghost of Emily Bronte or the incredible story of Irish immigrants in 19th century Ontario. The Underpainter is somewhat of a change for Urquhart, in several respects.

Each of her novels has brought Jane Urquhart increased attention and acclaim. Saturday Night described her novel Changing Heaven as a "beautifully written book" that "throbs with the storm and wind of passion" and Janice Kulyk Keefer has called Urquhart "One of the most compelling and accomplished voices in contemporary Canadian fiction." Of her enormously successful 1993 novel, Away , Timothy Findley wrote: "It is a great romantic tale - rich in imagery and with language worthy of Emily Brontë and Thomas Hardy. Like these writers, she is unafraid of words and spends them fearlessly. The uses to which she puts her command of language are beautiful and breathtaking." Away earned Urquhart both national and international acclaim from critics and readers. On the Globe and Mail bestseller list for 132 weeks, a record for any Canadian book

    Biographical Sketch
Novelist and poet, Jane Urquhart, was born in Geraldton, Ontario in 1949. She received from the University of Guelph a B.A. in English in 1971 and a B.A. in Art History in 1976. Her earliest publications were of poetry, IÂ’m Walking in the Garden of His Imaginary Palace (1982), her first published work, was a collaborative effort with her husband artist Tony Urquhart. Her first novel, The Whirlpool (1986), links the stories of three 19th century Canadians through use of the symbol of the whirlpool. The Whirlpool Away (1993), encompasses aspects of both Irish and Canadian history as told through the lives of four generations of women. She has earned a reputation as a major Canadian novelist whose ability to incorporate Canadian history into present-day narratives is superlative. Her fourth novel, The Underpainter (1997) received the Governor GeneralÂ’s Literary Award for fiction. Other honours include the Marian Engel Award (1994) for an outstanding body of prose written by a Canadian woman. In 1996 she was named a Chevalier dans lÂ’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.
