In THE STONE CARVERS, author Jane Urquhart weaves a masterfully constructed tale of love and war, passion and loss, spanning generations and sweeping the reader from the wilds of 19th century Canada to the post World War I battlefields of Vimy, France, where a colossal monument is being raised to honor those Canadians who fought and died in one of the most decisive battles in the war. It is at this monument that a brother and sister, recently reunited after a nearly a lifetime of estrangement, will work side by side, hoping to put their troubled pasts behind them.
Klara Becker is a 38-year-old spinster, living alone on her family's small farm in the German-settled town of Shoneval in southwestern Ontario, Canada. Over the years, Klara has come to accept and even savor the life of spinsterhood, filling up her days with tailoring, caring for her small herd of beloved snow-white cattle, and researching and recording the colorful history of Shoneval. But Klara has two things most spinsters do not - independence and a past. Independence because she has no family to speak of - no sick aunts to care for, no nieces or nephews to look after - and very deep within her heart, she holds faint memories of romance. Memories of a young man she loved and lost to the war - their brief affair lasting only a season but leaving a permanent impression on Klara that will guide her future in ways she could never imagine.

THE UNDERPAINTER
by Jane Urquhart INTRODUCTION "Each afternoon now, when I have finished my work, memory beckons me into the street, insists that I walk with her in the snow." With these words, Austin Fraser, a seventy-five-year-old American minimalist painter, beckons us into his world We Were the Mulvaneys a world populated by the ghosts of his past, a world that has come to be as cold and fractured as the icy terrain upon which he has treaded so carefully his entire life. In the name of art, Austin Fraser has perfected We Were the Mulvaneys if not the craft of painting We Were the Mulvaneys then the craft of guarding the inner chambers of his heart from those who love him. In her stunning new novel The Underpainter , Jane Urquhart contemplates the weight of a life not truly lived and the consequences of sacrificing one's humanity for the sake of art. A series of canvases called The Erasures earns Austin Fraser fame in the art world. After painting a highly detailed narrative scene, he systematically "erases" the images with progressively lighter shades of color. Richly textured, multilayered, brimming with precisely drawn characters and unforgettable images that rise We Were the Mulvaneys and then disappear We Were the Mulvaneys from its pages

Some Other Garden
Jane Urquhart Like Michael Ondaatje, Margaret Atwood, and Anne Michaels, Jane Urquhart began her literary career as a highly acclaimed poet. Now two of UrquhartÍs books of poetry - The Little Flowers of Madame de Montespan and I Am Walking in the Garden of His Imaginary Palace: Eleven Poems for Le Notre -are available together in this beautiful one-volume collectorÍs edition, entitled Some Other Garden. These poems centre on another time and place as they vividly evoke life in the court of the sun King, Louis XIV, as seen through the dispassionate eyes of one of the kingÍs most influential mistresses, Madame de Montespan. Set amidst the ornate gardens and backrooms of the palace of Versailles, these poems map the play of desire, vanity, dominance, and mortality that transpires within a kingÍs garden. From the machine at Marley and the machinations of court at Versailles, to the worms that play their final game of love beneath the statues in the garden, Urquhart renders the intrigues of court and romantic entanglement with startling imagery and astonishing craftsmanship.

Austin Fraser says that, for the sake of his painting, he "trespasses everywhere and I thieved constantly." The most obvious example of this is his relationship with Sarah, his model and mistress. Do you think that Sarah understands that Austin is "mining" their relationship in order to perfect his paintings of her? If so, why do you suppose she continues to pose for him? Who else does Austin "thieve" from? Is there any character in the novel that does not allow Austin to exploit their relationship? It has often been said that the essence of art lies in the way an artist lives, rather than in the way an artist paints. Is this true of Austin after the death of Augusta and George? What about at the end of The Underpainter? top of the page
"An engaging and moving exploration of love: mother-love, romantic love, love of country....Away is a melancholy Irish ballad sung on foreign soil, its words and music all the sweeter for being heard so far away from home."

Born in 1949 in Little Long Lac, Ontario, Jane Urquhart was a child with passionate artistic ambitions. She often staged impromptu performances in a corner of the schoolyard, and as a teenager became fascinated with the works of Beat writers such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. Urquhart, who writes vividly about young love, grief, and loss, experienced widowhood at the tender age of 24 when her husband, an art student, was tragically killed in an accident. Soon afterwards she met Tony Urquhart, the painter to whom she has been married for over twenty years and the father of her teenage daughter. She has earned two degrees, in English and Art History. top of the page
Is there a reason that you made Austin Fraser an American artist, rather than a Canadian artist? Do you think that art, literature and painting especially, is perceived differently in America than it is in Canada? You have a degree in art history and are married to a painter. The visual arts seem to have a rather large presence in your life. How has this infused your own work, especially The Underpainter?

The Underpainter

Underpainting is an art technique, and the narrator is an exponent thereof. The story is a first person description of a man's life and inadequacy, set around the Great Lakes in Canada and the US. The book is very diffuse and fractured, and the reader really needs to pay attention. Gavin didn't like the narrator or the main story (although the sub-plot, a woman's view of the first world was, was enjoyable) and rather suspected this was the author's intention. "A post-modern novel too far" and "A grim book" which Gavin wouldn't recommend. Doreen had read the book too, and found it a cold, uninviting read - the outcome not being worth the effort.

jane urquhart’s the stone carvers has made the long list of nominations for the booker prize. she talks to ivenus about her love for writing and for ireland
"The great thing about writing is that no one is looking at you… I don’t have to think about deadlines… if I don’t like it, I can just dump it."
Jane Urquhart is refreshingly laidback about the whole business of writing. Unlike many writers, who constantly stress the pressure and the loneliness of writing a novel, one really gets the sense that Urquhart is writing purely for the interest and the enjoyment.
This is a possible reason why her latest novel, The Stone Carvers, is such a smooth and comfortable narrative. Indeed, it’s so smooth and beautifully written that it has not only made the long list of Booker prize nominations, but it’s also joint second favourite to win the overall prize. A huge achievement for any writer.
Urquhart is a Canadian of Irish descent, who began writing poetry as a teenager. She has published four novels before this one – The Whirlpool, Changing Heaven, Away and The Underpainter – winning a number of literary prizes along the way, including France’s prestigious Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger (Prize for Best Foreign Book) award for The Whirlpool.

Jane Urquhart's diary on display at UW Library WATERLOO, Ont. A marriage license, exotic and colourful wine labels, tiny photographs of French graveyards, restaurant menus and postcards are among the fascinating items included in the pages of writer Jane Urquhart's diary. The diary, recently donated to the University of Waterloo library, is now on display in the Doris Lewis Rare Book Room. The 258-page diary covers the period from 1974 to 1979 a time that Urquhart describes as preceding her writing career. Urquhart is the winner of the 1997 Governor General's Award for her novel The Underpainter. Susan Saunders Bellingham, head of the library's special collections, said the author's diary is of great interest to both students in literature and women's studies. It is also "a fine complement to the papers of Urquhart's husband, artist Tony Urquhart, which are already housed in the Doris Lewis Rare Book Room." Jane Urquhart describes this diary which also served as a sketchbook, journal and trip diary as her "best one" in that it shows her collaborative work with her husband who is a UW fine arts professor. The many sketches and drawings by Tony Urquhart make this diary not unlike his series of "idea books" which form one of the most important portions of his personal papers and archives, also housed in the room.

A tribute to art's healing power
By NANCY SCHIEFER London Free Press THE STONE CARVERS Jane Urquhart In her highly regarded novel The Underpainter, published in 1997, Jane Urquhart wrote convincingly of the power of art to change not only individual lives, but sometimes the course of history. She does so again in her new novel, The Stone Carvers, re-working her underlying themes with added warmth and assurance. More book reviews Concerns or Feedback? - Email us!
