Three Valentines to the Wide World
I
The child disturbs our view. Tow-head bent, she
stands on one leg and folds up the other. She is listening
to the sound of her fingernail on a scab on her knee.
If I were her mother I would think right now of the chastening
that ridiculous arrangement of bones and bumps must go through, and that big ear too, till they learn what to do and hear. People don't perch like something seen in a zoo or in tropical sections of Florida. They'll have to buy her a cheap violin if she wants to make scraping noises. She is eight years old. What in the world could she wear that would cover her hinges and disproportions? Her face is pointed and blank, the brows as light as the hair. "Mother, is love God's hobby?" At eight you don't even look up from your scab when you ask it. A kid's squeak, is that a fit instrument for such a question?

Two Poems:
Birthstones
When I was young and we were poor
my mother showed me a ring some old love gave her,
and said, "I'll have your birthstone set in it." And said, "Don't ever lose it. The jeweler
offered to sell me half-glass, half-emerald,
but I'm giving you the real jewel." I wore it as if she had given me the world.
I had no notion what things cost.
I thought she'd love me if I could be good at last, but I never was. When I thought I knew her face
I told her I realized that stone was glass.
She blushed, and said the jeweler must have lied. I looked in books to find out how to feel.
Then, holding them cheap, I tried an exchange of rings.
My new one tested real. And on I went, and learned to recognize the faintest glimmer of pure green in a hand's clasp, or a pair of eyes, and out came carats of green from a guarded mine in grateful exchange, and back came green in turn. When I looked again I was grown, and my fingers were decked with rings, and still more green exchanges came, and we dropped them on the ground as our hands filled and boxes filled

From a new peony,
my last anthem,
a squirrel in glee
broke the budded stem.
I thought, where is joy
without fresh bloom,
to mask the tomb? Then a volunteer
stalk from sour
bird-drop this year
burst in frantic flower.

Expression of the self in amateur poetry is an attempt to validate the self and its perceptions, its inmost feelings and thoughts.
Mona Van Duyn
U.S. Poet Laureate Mona Van Duyn (1921- )
Mona van Duyn has received a considerable amount of favorable critical attention during her lifetime. Mona, who was born in a small town in Iowa, began writing poetry at a young age. She earned a master's degree in 1943 and married the same year. In 1947, not long after she and her husband began teaching at the University of Louisville, they co-founded a literary magazine called Perspective, a Quarterly of Literature . When they moved to Washington University in St. Louis in 1950, they continued the journal from their new location and Mona served as co-editor until 1970. Mona has published nine collections of poetry, beginning with 1959's Valentines to the Wide World . She has won numerous awards for her work, including the National Book Award for To See, To Take in 1970, and the Pulitzer Prize in 1990 for Near Changes . She became the first female U.S. Poet Laureate, serving in that capacity from 1992 to 1993. In a speech delivered to the Library of Congress in her role as Poet Laureate, Mona discussed people's interest in writing poetry: "Many of those who seek help in workshops in order get published have a dream, I think, not so much of devoting the most intense part of their lives to the hard, lonely, glorious, transcendent work-play of writing poetry, but of appearing before the world as a poet. It is a dream of individual freedom, an unexamined, perhaps even unconscious need. . . The point of this dream is the expression of freedom and uniqueness of a self." Critic William Logan writes that Mona has a "brisk, slightly wacky sense of language," and notes that her poems are "full of minor joys and partial surrenders." Mona was born on May 9, 1921.

Susan Irene Rotroff, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Classics in Arts and Sciences, has been named the first Jarvis Thurston and Mona Van Duyn Professor in the Humanities. A formal installation ceremony will take place at 4:30 p.m. May 19 in Holmes Lounge. "Susan is a wonderfully talented and interactive faculty member," said Edward S. Macias, Ph.D., executive vice chancellor and dean of Arts and Sciences. "She brings great depth and breadth to our excellent faculty work in classics and archaeology, and her teaching is much sought after by our students. I am very pleased that Arts and Sciences at Washington University can honor her in this way." George M. Pepe, associate professor and chair of the classics department, said: "Susan richly deserves this honor. Despite her many accomplishments and awards, she has always been unassuming, amiable and generous with both her time and her energy in the interest of the students and the department." The Jarvis Thurston and Mona Van Duyn Professorship honors teacher/scholar Jarvis Thurston, Ph.D., professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of English in Arts and Sciences, and his wife, Mona Van Duyn, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and former Poet Laureate of the United States. The professorship was created as a result of a 1997 gift from the Danforth Foundation to support professorships in the humanities. It is the first of four such professorships that will be named in honor of distinguished persons who have served on the University's humanities faculty.
