A.v.H.: I think males have tried to control the frontier. Always. That's their territory, and that's where they go when they want to run away from women. So for them the west always was a frontier to run away to. And when you run out of west, I mean, on a certain stage you hit the west end of Canada and you can't go any further, except into the ocean. And then actually by the time you get to Japan and to China you are in the East again. And so they get really upset because they have no more west left so they sort of did a turn and started going up north. "Aritha van Herk was born in central Alberta and spent the first eighteen years of her life on a farm in the parkland. She attended the University of Alberta in Edmonton, and rose to international literary prominence in 1978 with the publication of Judith , which received the Seal First Novel Award. Both her creative and critical writing have been widely published, and her work has been translated into ten languages. Aritha van Herk is a professor of Canadian Literature and Creative Writing in the Department of English at the University of Calgary. She has lived in Edmonton, Vancouver, Australia and Spain, but finds that Calgary suits her best."

Current Moose Jaw Weather Festival 2002 Aritha van Herk Aritha van Herk is a novelist, short story writer, editor, literary critic and feminist. She was born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta in 1954 to Dutch immigrants, Meretje (van Dam) and William Herk and was raised on a farm. Van Herk was educated at the University of Alberta in Edmonton where she studied Canadian literature and creative writing. She received a B.A. in 1976 and an M.A. in 1978. In 1974 she married Robert Sharp, a geologist. She has taught at the University of Calgary since 1983. Judith (1978), her first novel about a secretary turned pig farmer, has been widely translated and earned her the Seal Canadian First Novel Award. The Tent Peg (1981), her second novel is one of the few fictional works about the Canadian north, written from a woman's perspective. No Fixed Address: An Amorous Journey (1986), a parody of the picaresque novel follows the travels of Arachne Manteia, an underwear saleswoman. It was nominated for the Governor General's Award for fiction. Her book Places Far From Ellesmere (1990), a geografictione crosses genres by merging fiction, autobiography, and literary criticism.

Defining the Prairies Contributors Alison Calder is Assistant Professor at the Department of English, University of Manitoba, where she teaches literature and creative writing. She has published several articles on regionalism and prairie writing, as well as essays about Guy Vanderhaeghe and Sky Lee.
