February 4, 2002 Vol. 31 No. 20 Professor on Maverick trail By Greg Harris
Media Relations By her own definition, novelist and English professor Aritha van Herk is as Albertan as they come. "Albertans are mavericks, people who step out of bounds, refuse to do as we are told, take risks, and then laugh when we fall down and hit the ground," she writes in her new book, Mavericks: An Incorrigible History of Alberta Published by Penguin late last year, Mavericks represents a foray outside her own specializations in contemporary literature and creative writing. But there’s no falling and hitting the ground here. "A lively, highly readable account of what makes Albertans tick," sums up Maclean’s magazine; "Van Herk uses her talents as a novelist to lighten what could be leaden," says Quill and Quire; "This book, told in a storyteller’s voice, is a virtual compendium of ‘quotable quotes’ and should be savoured slowly for best appreciation," notes the Edmonton Journal. Mavericks is one in a series of popular histories Penguin commissioned in response to a growing interest in Canada’s past. Editors asked writers such as Calgary’s van Herk, B.C.’s George Bowering and Quebec’s Laurier LaPierre to produce accounts of their home province for the average reader.

by Aritha van Herk
Red Deer College Press, 196 pp. Within the envelope of temporary warmth of a Chinook during a February in Calgary, a woman hastens to meet her own killer after having pursued others of his kind worldwide and found them wanting. Their meeting place? The stately Palliser Hotel, which serves not only as the main venue for the new novel by Aritha van Herk, but also as its topographic center. Dorcas, a courier by trade, has been trying to have herself killed for some time. A woman of the world whose memories are always accompanied by would-be assassins, she has returned to the closest thing to a center of the heart for her. Restlessness catalogues her last (?) night on Earth as a test of her killer's mettle and manners. Throughout the evening Dorcas reflects on her life, those who have made application to take it away, and her mysterious "Dear One." Her reason for ending her life is a literal take on the words "manic" and "depression" - the restlessness of the title. van Herk's prose shows a deft hand at work as the novel steps smoothly through the night and her protagonist's memory. Dorcas's internal monologue reveals a literary weariness with the world which occasionally seems inauthentic. This may be the source of her angst - if it is, kudos to van Herk on an amazing characterization.

by Adrian Kelly History, Van Herk style
Alberta's literary lawbreaker brings Alberta to life If, when you think "history," you think thick high school textbooks, their contents a chronicle of dates and facts, or if you think that "Canadian history" is an oxymoron and that "Albertan history" might make a slim volume, well, hang on to your hats. Here comes Aritha van Herk in her white Porsche – speeding but polite to Mounties who pull her over – to show you that the story of this province is a ripping good read. We are fortunate that Alberta's best known literary outlaw, the Judith of genre, was asked by Penguin, Canada to write the Alberta instalment in its Canadian history series. Van Herk, daunted by the task, took it on nonetheless – and then some. Her love affair with "one of the most amazing characters in the story of Canada," along with the Dutch-Albertan work ethic that sees her writing students shaking humbled heads, resulted in 1,800 manuscript pages. The 10-page biography for Mavericks: An Incorrigible History of Alberta includes a list of "Useful, Informative, or Downright Essential Books about Alberta" – over 150 of them, just to get you up to snuff. The self-declared "impostor in the field of history" certainly did her homework. Mavericks, cut to 465 accessible pages, merits comparison to the Albertan culture-builders that van Herk writes about with deference and the kind of admiration, often adoration, that radiates from the page. As much a passionate ode to Alberta's idiosyncrasies as it is a history, the book celebrates (and sometimes lovingly tongue-lashes) the inimitable characters who coloured and textured the contested, contrary space called Alberta, from Bible Bill Aberhart (who, after being elected, asked a journalist "what do I do now?") to the Famous Five, and from cowpokes and chuckwagon cooks to Klein and the Stock (both of whom, by the way, receive remarkably objective treatment.)

A Fine Daughter
Catherine Simmons Niven ISBN 0-88995-192-6
Imagine the town of Little Cypress, upright, meticulous and dutiful, where the citizens follow the routine of getting up and going to bed without deviation. Imagine Little Cypress in the 50s, washday religiously observed, gossip exchanged, children carefully supervised and immorality outlawed. Now imagine a cloud of butterflies blown off course by a high wind, falling like an orange cloak over the same town of Little Cypress. Imagine a cloud of butterflies infiltrating the hearts and minds of the inhabitants of this repressed town. Imagine a swarm of butterflies be-clouding the senses of the town's good citizens. Suddenly, in the lives of the townspeople, there is a passion, a strange, sweet scent, a secret wind of change. Fran, the clerk in the general store, who is an outsider because she refused to give up her illegitimate daughter for adoption, knows the secret. Her daughter, Cors, is about to discover the secret. And willingly or not, the entire town will endure a transformation beyond all transformations. A Fine Daughter is about what it was like to have an illegitimate child in the 1950s. It is a novel about the way small towns terrorize happiness. It is a novel about giving birth to happimess and how butterflies enable a bountiful passion that changes Little Cypress forever.

IV. THE MODERN ERA : 1950 TO THE PRESENT
Contemporary Photographs THE PERIOD AFTER the middle of the 20th century is characterized by much greater contact between north and south. Inuit communities were leaving the nomadic life behind, moving into settlements, and taking part in many aspects of modern Canadian life. Although hunting and fishing remain a significant part of life in the North, the old ways are swiftly changing. One of the most significant changes has been the explosion of creativity and artistic expression in the form of carvings, prints and other art. From a tiny Inuit population of about 35 000 has come an amazing wealth of art. The Inuit have also begun to tell their stories and record their memories in print, both for themselves (with more and more of these being published in Inuktitut, particularly for use in the schools) and for an interested audience outside the Arctic. The First Nations in the Yukon and the Dene in the Northwest Territories after a long history in which their stories were transmitted orally, are now seeing their legends and stories published in a more permanent form and made available outside their own communities. Canadian writers from the South have continued to be influenced by the idea of the northern frontier, by the harsh, mystic qualities of the North, and have responded in fiction with novels such as Gabrielle Roy's
