Vanderhaeghe, Guy. The Last Crossing
PR 9199.3 .V37L38 2002 VUPT

This eagerly anticipated new novel by Guy Vanderhaeghe, the award-winning author of The Englishman's Boy , is a sweeping tale of interwoven lives and stories set in the second half of the nineteenth century, in the American and Canadian West and in Victorian England. Charles and Addington Gaunt must find their brother Simon, who has gone missing in the wilds of the American West. Charles, a disillusioned artist, and Addington, a disgraced military captain, enlist the services of a guide to lead them on their journey across a ddifficult and unknown landscape. This is the enigmatic Jerry Potts, half Blackfoot, half Scottish, who suffers his own painful past. The part grows to include Caleb Ayto, a sycophantic American journalist, and Lucy Stoveall, a wise and beautiful woman who travels in the hope of avenging her sister's vicious murder. Later, the group is joined by Custis Straw, a Civil War veteran searching for salvation, and Custis's friend and protector Aloysius Dooley, a saloon-keeper. This unlikely posse becomes entangled in an unfolding drama that forces each person to come to terms with his own demons. The Last Crossing The Last Crossing is Guy Vanderhaeghe's most powerful novel to date. It is a novel of harshness and redemption, an epic masterpiece, rich with unforgettable characters and vividly described events, that solidifies his place as one of Canada's premier storytellers.

The Englishman's Boy
by Guy Vanderhaeghe
" The Englishman's Boy is Guy Vanderhaeghe's stunning new work of fiction, which brilliantly weaves two parallel narratives into a spellbinding novel. Harry Vincent is a struggling young scenarist, newly arrived in 1920s Hollywood from Saskatchewan, and he has landed a job at a movie studio thanks to the unrequited love of his life, the tough, intellectual, and witty scriptwriter Rachel Gold. Harry's big opportunity comes when studio owner Damon Ira Chance enlists him to find the elusive old-time Western actor, Shorty McAdoo. Chance, a man obsessed with the genius of D.W. Griffith, and a megalomaniac with grand artistic visions, wants to make the the big film about the American West. He believes McAdoo's past can provide the authentic content he is after. When Harry finally locates the down-on-his-luck McAdoo, he gradually uncovers a story which will become the basis for Chance's film. His ensuing collaboration with the solitary, enigmatic Chance leads to disturbing revelations about the darker side of the studio owner's ambition. In counterpoint to the hard-edged realm of Hollywood - with its visionaries, dreamers, and celebrities - is the haunting story of a young drifter know simply as the 'the Englishman's boy.' In May of 1873, when his employment with a British gentleman ends, he joins a group of wolf hunters en route north into Canada on the trail of horse thieves. It is a journey through an unforgiving land which climaxes in a brutal encounter with the Assiniboine Indians in the Cypress Hills of what is now known as Saskatchewan. Vanderhaeghe's rendering of the stark, dramatic beauty of the landscape becomes a perfect backdrop for vivid scenes of action, adventure, and violence.

Guy Vanderhaeghe's My Present Age
In My Present Age , Saskatchewan native Guy Vanderhaeghe introduces us to Ed, a guy I can't decide if I like or hate. Vanderhaeghe's Ed, in a first person narrative, tells his tale of woe using detailed remembrances from his past to help his audience understand his present. The effect is a darkly comic tale of a man struggling to survive the modern world while searching for his estranged wife. Meet Ed a slovenly, fat, unemployed thirty-something male living life on the edge of madness. Ed spends all 240 pages of this novel searching for his wife Victoria, who does not want to be found (especially by Ed). He finds her in the end, but is no closer to having her back than when I began the first page. Ed, a former school teacher, has recently quit his job selling china for Eatons. Good thing he quit too, as he was just about to be fired, for when he wasn't hiding in the back room to avoid serving his customers, he was serving them rudely in a phony English accent ("Madam, I shall repeat what I told you scant days ago. We do not have a gravy boat in the particular pattern you require. That pattern, I should hazard to say, was discontinued approximately the time General Gordon was slain at Khartoum. Surely you recall that tragedy? It was in all the papers, I believe. (p57) This is one of the reasons I like Ed. Now unemployed, Ed sits at home in his one-bedroom apartment pining for Victoria while living off of his life insurance.
