    Lunch with Guy Vanderhaeghe Born in Esterhazy in Eastern Saskatchewan, Vanderhaeghe has been interested in history, particularly Western Canadian history, since he was a young boy. His grandmother told him stories of her father who arrived before the Riel Rebellion. He read the local histories and the accounts of the Victorian gentlemen adventurers who roamed the Canadian West. Man Descending . His new book, The Last Crossing The Last Crossing The Last Crossing is a book of characters.     Makeda Silvera was born in Jamaica and has lived in Canada for over 30 years. She is the co-founder and managing editor of Sister Vision Press, which exclusively publishes the work of women of colour. She was an editor of the journal Fireweed and is the author of two collections of short stories, Her Head a Village (1994) and Remembering G (1990). She is the editor of The Other Woman: Women of Colour in Contemporary Canadian Literature (1994), Ma-Ka: Diaspora Juks (1997) and the groundbreaking Piece of My Heart: A Lesbian of Colour Anthology (1991).     Kim has produced movies, mini-series and series television. Her work has been seen on ABC, CBS, PBS, Showtime, Disney, BBC, CBC, CTV, Canwest Global, YTV, MTN, Superchannel, Showcase and numerous international broadcasters. Her awards include a Cable Ace, several Geminis and a collection of international prizes. Kim was vice president and producer at Credo Entertainment Corporation from 1993 until January 2000, when she left to form Original Pictures Inc. While with Credo she was the showrunner for 52 episodes of The Adventures of Shirley Holmes for YTV, Fox Family and the BBC, and 22 episodes of My Life As A Dog for Showtime and TMN. Event 28

          Gene-O-Rama at the Ottawa Public Library A must for genealogy buffs
          On March 28 and 29, 2003, the Ottawa Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society, in partnership with the Ottawa Public Library, is hosting the 21st annual Gene-O-Rama conference at Ben Franklin Place, 101 Centrepointe Drive. Registration forms are available for pick up at all Ottawa Public Library branches. The conference registration fee is $30 before March 7 and $35 after March 7.

          The 21st annual Gene-O-Rama conference is chaired by Edward Kipp and has a great line-up of speakers and genealogical exhibitors. The Honourable Lorna Milne, Senator, opens the conference with the Pat Horan Memorial Lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 28. Bruce Patterson, Saguenay Herald and Assistant Registrar, Canadian Heraldic Authority within the Governor General's Office, is the keynote speaker at the Saturday night, end of conference banquet. Banquet tickets are $32 and must be purchased prior to March 7.

    Contact the Guy Vanderhaeghe Library. Students and recent visitors to our school will notice a striking new sign above the library door. At a dedication ceremony Monday, May 3 1999, any students, staff and community members gathered in the library. Jazzatin, under the direction of Mr. K. Hrycay, opened the program with several well performed selections. Ms. E. Dormuth introduced Guy Vanderhaeghe and described his achievements. Mr. D. Mennie unveiled the new sign. Students Angela Mennie and Alicia Danylchuk listed and thanked the donors. As many of you know, Guy was born in Esterhazy and took his early education here before going to the University of Saskatchewan in Regina and Saskatoon. His first book, Man Descending (1982), won the Governor General's Award in Canada and the Faber Prize in the U. K. That book was followed by a novel, My Present Age, which was nominated for the Booker Price in 1984. Homesick, written in 1989, was co-winner of the City of Toronto Book Award. His fiction has appeared in translation around the world. Guy has also written plays. I had a Job I liked was first produced in 1991 and won the Canadian Authors' Award for Drama. His second play, Dancock's Dance, was produced in 1996.
