Verlaine, Paul , French poet. He gained some notice with the Parnassian poetry of (1866) and Rimbaud . The two poets traveled in Belgium and England; their relationship ended in tragedy when Verlaine shot and wounded Rimbaud and was imprisoned in Belgium for two years. In prison he was brought back to the Catholic faith of his childhood and wrote some noble religious poetry that appeared in Sagesse (1881). From that time also dates his Romances sans paroles (1874), which shows Verlaine as one of the first of the symbolists (1884) and (1889) were perhaps the best of his later volumes of poetry. Of his prose works the only one of importance is

Biographie Né le 30 mars 1844, Paul Verlaine était d'origine ardennaise mais vécut à Paris. Élève au lycée Bonaparte, il embrassa par la suite une carrière d'employé de bureau à la mairie de Paris. Il commença à fréquenter les milieux littéraires, menant une vie répréhensible aux yeux des siens, entre les cafés, où il abusait de l'absinthe, et les amours faciles et décevantes. Ses premiers recueils de poèmes, Poèmes saturniens 1866) et les Fêtes galantes (1869), sont marqués par l'influence de la poésie parnassienne, même si l'on voit déjà s'y dessiner des traits indéniablement personnels — sensualité, mélancolie, etc. — et tout à fait propres à la poétique verlainienne telle qu'il la décrira ultérieurement dans l'Art poétique (écrit en 1874, publié dans Jadis et Naguère en 1884).     American composer ( see songs ) and poet ( see songs ) working primarily in English This entry contributed by around 10/15/98 Richard Pearson Thomas is recognized as a gifted composer of concert and theater music. An evening of his songs entitled Observation Deck was presented at Lincoln Center in January featuring Theresa McCarthy, Lauren Ward and Michael Winther. This season saw premieres of a number of commissioned works including Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, Abridged and Condensed created for baritone John Muriello at the University of Iowa, and Vergin Tutt'Amor, commissioned by soprano Kati Guerra for performance with the Saint Louis Chamber Orchestra. Soprano Patricia Prunty recorded a number of Mr. Thomas' art songs and cabaret songs following her recital at Trinity Chapel in New York and soprano Jennifer Bodenweber presented her commissioned Letter from Camp on that same concert series. 'Currents' at the University of Richmond, Virginia presented Gertie's Head with soprano, Jeanette Thompson.
