A Guide to the Works of Joan D. Vinge
The "Sibyl Net" is a fictional computer network operating over space and time, which uses human beings, known as "sibyls", for terminals. Those chosen individuals, who have been infected with the "sibyl virus", can step into "transfer" in order to gain access to a widely distributed database, that was once built by scientists of an ancient interstellar empire (with its main machinery stationed on the planet Tiamat The true inventor of this "Sibyl Net", however, is Joan D. Vinge , an immensely popular and creative Science Fiction writer living in the 20th century on the now legendary planet Earth. One of her numerous readers, Dennis Maciuszek, is now presenting the results of his ambitious research project whose goals were to establish a connection to a small part of this marvellous "Sibyl Net" by using a simple personal computer as terminal. Dennis welcomes you to his testing site as one of the first users on Earth ever to try out this new technology. This page is the interface which enables you to speak to a real "sibyl" and thus find out about anything you always wanted to know (well, at least about the novels and stories written by Mrs Vinge , the aforementioned author). He also owns a

The Snow Queen

by Joan D. Vinge
Reading Group Questions and Topics for Discussion
  • The Snow Queen, in part, is an exploration of what love is and what people will do for the sake of love. For love of Sparks, Moon crosses galaxies and fights death in order to return to him. For love of Moon, BZ Gundhalinu risks his career and allows himself to be renounced by the members of his social caste. Herne follows Arienrhod to a suicide death. What do you think love is? How far would you let someone else go for love of you? How far would you go and how much would you give up for love?
  • This novel is set extremely far into the future, after humanity has spread to colonies on other planets. We have even found and developed relationships with alien life. Do you think these humans of the future have changed or grown much in terms of the way they deal with each other and the way their communities operate compared to what you know of humans now? Do you think this is a reasonable expectation for humanity's future? In what ways do you think human-kind will change?
  • While many have remarked on the beauty of the love story, many other readers have commented that they found the Moon and Sparks love story to be too incestuous. Though we find out that their genetic makeup is unrelated, Moon and Sparks still grew up believing they were first cousins and with a decidedly sibling-like relationship. Do you think it is natural for them to have fallen in love?

    World's End
    Joan D. Vinge
Tom Doherty 1984 A book review by Danny Yee Roadside Picnic is the novel on which Tarkovsky's film Stalker was based. Aliens have visited the Earth, leaving behind the Zones, places of immense danger where incomprehensible technological wonders can be found. A frontier culture has developed around these areas, where "stalkers" risk their lives in illegal expeditions to extract items. The result is a powerful but understated portrayal of mankind facing the unknown. World's End , a sequel to the Hugo award winning The Snow Queen , has an very similar setting. World's End is a localised area where ordinary physics is warped and reality is somewhat unstable, and where down-at-heel adventurers try to make their fortune prospecting. In this case the plot is rather different, with the focus on the individual quest of the protagonist to find himself and an ongoing plot rather than the broader view of the Strugatskys. Whether Vinge copied from the Strugatskys' novel is not clear, but Roadside Picnic is, in my opinion, by far the better novel.
