Introduction
Vinge has a main character named Cat, a boy with psionic powers and the features of a dying race. Cat is street scum, but there is something inside him that makes him fight that destiny. It is something other people would kill or enslave him for. Vinge moves easily between the dark moments at the depths of human depravity and the times when they overcome all of that to be something greater. The one tone she rarely visits is light-heartedness. These novels are not brain candy; they are intensely psychological, uncovering the most basic human emotions, including fear, love, longing, and racism. Vinge's plots do an excellent job of focusing the themes and the psychological conflicts of the characters.
Cat
Psion begins the story of Cat, a street kid with the eyes of a dying race that make him feared and hated. Someone is trying to capture him, to take him above the dying slums to the world where everyone has a name and a number. But Cat wants none of this, even if his power could make his dreams come true. Because Cat knows that power leads to fear, fear leads to hate, and hate leads to destruction. Yet to be powerless is just as much a nightmare, as he discovers the depraved levels to which human beings will go to make a profit. After his telepathy was burnt out from killing a man, Cat went through life blind. He is offered special drugs to bring his powers back if he will use them to protect a rich Earth family. He is to become a

O livro contem 2 historias:
A rainha de gelo (The Snow Queen )

Vinge was my favorite writer. It started with her Hugo Award-winning 1981 tome, The Snow Queen , a lovely, lengthy tale about a poor farm girl on a distant planet who grows up to be queen. Catspaw followed, and I fell in love with the fictive hero, a telepath who felt so much that he couldn't fit in with normal society. Something in Vinge's workher lush, evocative scenes, maybe, or her fully fleshed-out charactersspoke to the young introvert I was quickly becoming, so much so that the instant I finished these novels I turned around and read them again. I can't quite pinpoint when Vinge and I parted ways. Her 1991 sequel to

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!

Joan D. Vinge : Psion
(Orbit p/back, 1983, 346pp)
I have to admit to having had this book around for an embarassingly long time before finally reading it recently. When I picked it up off the bookpile, a till receipt fell out showing that I had actually purchased this book new on publication in 1983. Ouch, that bookpile is reaching dangerously large proportions! Having delayed reading this long, I wish I could say it was worth the wait. Vinge had caught my eye at the time with a number of good stories, including the excellent award-winning novel, The Snow Queen . Unfortunately, Psion is a rather run of the mill SF plot, with a transparent plot, cardboard cut-out characters and not much in the way of interesting detailing to redeem the storyline. The story revolves around Cat, a street kid picked up by the police and routinely checked for psi capabilities before being packed off to a workcamp. Fortunately, the tests show he has some latent psi abilities, and he is posted instead to a local Institute, which sets about developing his powers. How this happens, how Cat becomes involved in a conspiracy to hijack the market in telhassium, the key to the stardrive needed for interstellar travel, and how he ends up in a labour camp mining the crystal, makes for a fairly lacklustre story, predictable and with few interesting twists. As a coming of age story, it basically lacks the strong central character needed to make the reader empathise with the character's plight. Alright as a quick read, but infinitely unmemorable.

    Joan D. Vinge:The Summer Queen
[spoilers for The Snow Queen and World's End herein] This is an incredible trilogy. Yes, despite what I'm told on the cover, The Snow Queen and The Summer Queen does not make a complete unit, without the volume World's End in between. A few scenes from it are excerpted in The Summer Queen , and it's synopsized, but I still consider it an essential part. If I tried to synopsize The Summer Queen , I'd end up with a long boring message. So I'll just summarize the setup, which will take long enough: Tiamat is a planet orbiting a multiple-star system that includes a black hole; it thus has "Summer" and "Winter" each lasting close to a century. The once-mighty Terran Empire fell many years ago, and several of its secrets, including the manipulation of "smartmatter", have been lost. Its stardrive technology had also been lost, but travel via black holes was possible, so eight worlds linked by such travel formed a loose alliance called The Hegemony. Tiamat was not part of the Hegemony, and access was only possible during Winter because of the position of the stars in the system. In Tiamat's oceans live creatures called mers, who are semi-humanoid and exchange beautiful songs. Their blood, however, is the reason the Hegemony is interested in Tiamat, since from it can be made "the water of life", which provides immortality if one takes it regularly.
