Abstrakt
Do tøiceti let budeme mít technické prostøedky, abychom vytvoøili nadlidskou inteligenci. Krátce poté skonèí lidská éra. Je možno tomuto vývoji zabránit? Conclusion: Highly Recommended A Deepness in the Sky is billed as a prequel to Vinge's 1992 award winning A Fire Upon the Deep. But anyone who reads it just wanting to explore more of the wonderful universe Vinge created in that earlier work will be very disappointed. Deepness is connected to Fire by only the most tenuous of threads, that being the reminisces of Pham Nuwen about his life with the Qeng Ho. Deepness is different from Fire in all the ways I thought Fire was great. Where Fire deals with plots and mysteries extending over billions of years, Deepness covers a much shorter span of time. Where Fire spans a vast sweep of thousands of light years, Deepness takes place almost exclusively in one solar system. And in what will surely infuriate some, where Fire took place against the lush backdrop of the Zones of Thought universe, Deepness does not. While technically in the same milieu as Fire, the entire story takes place in the Slow Zone and nothing of the true order of affairs is known to the characters. With much of the best of Fire stripped away, I should have been very unhappy with Deepness. Instead I liked it more, finding it superior to Fire in almost every way. The plot was better. The characters were far better. Heck, there were even a few people I liked in there. The evil is more comprehensible. The ending vastly more satisfactory. I suspect because it takes place in the Slowness, Vinge had mercy on us and actually allows us to see and understand the technology used in the story. Many of the obnoxious plot weaknesses of Fire are absent in Deepness, though a few do slip in.

Conclusion: Worth Reading This book, one of Vinge's first, is far shorter than A Fire Upon the Deep and A Deepness in the Sky - and that's a good thing. While not bad exactly, this book has little of the grandeur of those two more recent works. Perhaps this makes Vinge somewhat the opposite of what you often hear of people. You know, "I like his early stuff, but the new stuff is crap". It seems like the later the work by Vinge, the more I like it. Sometime around the present day, a researcher for the US DoD discovers a way to create impenetrable bubbles of space time to permanently separate small regions of space from the normal universe. These "bobbles" as they are called are immediately put to foul use by a group within the Lawrence Livermore labs. These rouges use the bobble generator to encapsulate all military and government facilities on earth and set themselves up as a dictatorial Peace Authority. Fast forward several years. The inevitable underground ragtag band of heroes is none too pleased with the Authority. This group includes the inventor of the bobbles and a super-genius kid. Together, pursued by the master hunter of the Authority, they set out to eliminate the Authority and restore freedom to mankind.

A Deepness in the Sky is a prequel to Vernor Vinge's A Fire Upon the Deep, but it doesn't share much plot, character or mood with that Hugo-winning space opera. What the books have in common is sheer excellence. More Stories

Deepness has much less technology faster-than-light travel hasn't even been invented yet and feels almost claustrophobic in its focus on two starships orbiting one planet. Not too slow for thrills Slower-than-light (STL) settings are rare in science fiction, and for good reason. It's hard to believe that any society could be held together by the years of travel time between stars. How do you manage a civilization where each outpost is a hundred years from its nearest neighbor?

... Singulary Group Singularity: A preview of the next 30 years

Tuesday, October 9, 2001
Vernor Vinge was the first to conceptualize the Singularity. He is an excellent science fiction writer who I recommend highly (Gawd, his books are good). My personal conviction that the Singularity was going to happen came out of reading Vinge's "Across Real-time." In a note at the end of the book he said, and I am paraphrasing (which adds its own value): "I don't know about you but it is clear to me we are headed for a technological Singularity." That simple statement is all it took for me to "grok" the vision. Vinge's Singularity Vision Complete bibiliography More : Summary data and contact info. 1. What Is The Singularity?
The acceleration of technological progress has been the central feature of this century. We are on the edge of change comparable to the rise of human life on Earth. The precise cause of this change is the imminent creation by technology of entities with greater-than-human intelligence. Science may achieve this breakthrough by several means (and this is another reason for having confidence that the event will occur):
  • Computers that are 'awake' and superhumanly intelligent may be developed. (To date, there has been much controversy as to whether we can create human equivalence in a machine. But if the answer is 'yes,' then there is little doubt that more intelligent beings can be constructed shortly thereafter.)
  • Large computer networks and their associated users may 'wake up' as superhumanly intelligent entities.

    Abstract
Within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly after, the human era will be ended. Is such progress avoidable? If not to be avoided, can events be guided so that we may survive? These questions are investigated. Some possible answers (and some further dangers) are presented.
    What is The Singularity?
The acceleration of technological progress has been the central feature of this century. I argue in this paper that we are on the edge of change comparable to the rise of human life on Earth. The precise cause of this change is the imminent creation by technology of entities with greater than human intelligence. There are several means by which science may achieve this breakthrough (and this is another reason for having confidence that the event will occur):

Arterati On Ideas: Vinge's View of the Singularity
    by Natasha Vita-More
Arterati on Ideas is an on-going series of conversations among outstanding and creative thinkers covering a wide range of views and the talents that produce them. In notable style, Arterati on Ideas, in the person of Natasha Vita More, talks with the eminent Vernor Vinge. Says Natasha: Vernor Vinge (pronounced Vin-jee) is a delight. My first impression was marked by the sparkle in his eyes and welcoming smile. Suddenly, the Singularity seemed not such a distant and unsettling event, but one that was certainly plausible, given its author. We met just north of San Diego at his favorite Greek restaurant. Sitting in a warm and hospitable atmosphere, listening to insightful analogies, detecting words such as "kindness" while admiring his acknowledgement of others whose vision influences his own, Vernor Vinge talks to me about the Singularity.
There have been some misinterpretations about the Singularity. Can you explain what you mean by the term?

THE MAN WHO FINALLY WON THE HUGO
by Jim Frenkel Among serious science fiction writers, Vernor Vinge is considered one of the most highly respected writers in the field. For years, professional writers and editors would walk around saying things like, "Boy, that Vernor Vinge is really terrific. Its really a shame that more readers havent discovered his books." And for a number of years, this was quite true. Vernor Vinge was better known in the late 1960s and early 1970s than he was in 1983. His debut novel, GRIMMS WORLD, was quite highly regarded for its imaginative premise, well-worked out science, evocative depiction of life on a planet with an unusual geology, and its general "sense of wonder".
