A LacusCurtius Text

LacusCurtius
Marcus Vitruvius Pollio:
de Architectura
Introduction and Table of Contents
Another orphan text that no one wanted to enter, but that many nevertheless will be glad to see online. (Why is it that the self-aggrandizements of Cicero, the lecheries and whining of Ovid and the blatherings of that debauched old goose Seneca made it onto the Net before the works that give us solid technical information about what Rome was really good at, viz. the construction of her great buildings and works of engineering?)
Anyway, the text has been thoroughly proofed, and I believe it to be errorfree (but if there are errors, please report them). I've already provided a very few preliminary annotations, but much other material remains to be added, first and foremost among which are the drawings.
If you are looking for information about the architecture of amphitheatres or circuses, or about the engineering of bridges or roads, this is not the place for it, surprisingly: Vitruvius never so much as mentions a bridge of any type, and as for his references to the others, they are very infrequent and utterly incidental. His references are:
amphitheatres and circuses (once each, in the same sentence: 1.vii.1)

Vitruvius on Architecture author Thomas Gordon Smith
Thomas Gordon Smith is a professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Notre Dame and a practicing classical architect. He is the author of Classical Architecture: Rule and Invention 288 pages, 8 1/4 x 10 5/8´´
200 illustrations, 25 in color
ISBN 1-885254-98-9
$45 paperback ($60 Canada, £30 UK) Approximately 2,025 years ago, an aged Roman architect named Vitruvius wrote down on ten scrolls everything he knew about architecture. He presented this work, known today as Ten Books on Architecture , to Emperor Augustus in the hope of changing what he perceived as a rampant lack of professionalism and educational rigor in the practice of architecture. The Ten Books, the most comprehensive architectural book written in antiquity and the only such work to survive, is a seminal volume in Western culture and continues to be an important and influential resource. Vitruvius on Architecture presents not only a new translation of the five books most relevant to contemporary architecture but also new drawings and watercolors that illustrate, certainly for the first time since ancient days, Vitruvius’s methods of proportion and composition. Architect and educator Thomas Gordon Smith re-created these finely detailed illustrations directly from the text, both the clear written descriptions and examples of temple architecture cited. (Photographs of these buildings and details of their architecture are also included in this volume.) The author, in an introduction both scholarly and personal, discusses what is known of Vitruvius himself as well as his influence on generation after generation of architects. This new edition of an ancient tome is intended for practical application, as an indispensable reference for classical studies, and as an incontrovertible example of the enduring value of the architecture of antiquity for contemporary education and practice.

Your interest in symmetry and your understanding that it is an important aspect in the perception of beauty is interesting. What Krier is criticizing is a simple mirror-like symmetry where right equals left. I do not believe that there is anything inherently ugly about a mirror-like symmetry, but the word symmetry means much more than that in classical architecture.
In Book I, Chapter II of Vitruvius' Ten Books on Architecture, Vitruvius describes architecture as depending on Order, Arrangement, Eurythmy, Symmetry, Propriety, and Economy. He then goes on to define each concept defining Symmetry as "a proper agreement between the members of the work itself, and relation between the different parts and the whole general scheme. Thus in the human body there is a kind of symmetrical harmony between forearm, foot, palm, finger, and other small parts: and so it is with perfect buildings. In the case of temples, symmetry may be calculated from the thickness of a column, from a triglyph, or even from a module..."
Vitruvius is in fact describing what we might think of as proportion where each aspect of a building's design has some relationship to the other parts. If you want to investigate the concept of symmetry further, then you might want to pick up a copy of the Dover Publications reprint of Morgan's translation of Vitruvius.

I won’t go into detail here, but you should read my description of Bubastis if you want to understand what my design is all about. This was not my favorite mission, and is definitely not my best city. Space here is very limited, and there isn’t much room for a creative design or an attractive layout. This was my first try at Sauty, and I didn’t do too badly. I think that the completion time of 412 months is pretty good, and the scores are all perfect, so I decided to post it anyway. I could definitely do better if I played it again, but I want to move on. This submission does have two unique features. First, I wanted to do something “special” with the three pyramids that you have to build. Space is very limited, but I found a spot where I could build all three together in a “V” shape. It really looks good. This was also a good idea for the construction schedule. All three being in the same location gave me an advantage during construction.

MARCUS VITRUVIUS POLLIO.

Marcus Vitruvius Pollio
Marcus Vitruvius Pollio, a first-century BCE Roman architect, was the creator of the original engineering handbook. His De architectura libri decem (Ten books on architecture) carefully described existing practices, not only in the design and construction of buildings, but also in what are today thought of as engineering diciplines. His books include such varied topics as the manufacture of building materials and dyes (material science), machines for heating water for public baths (chemical engineering), amplification in ampitheaters (acoustics), and the design of roads and bridges (civil engineering). His writing is prescriptive and gives direct advice: "I have drawn up definite rules to enable you, by observing them, to have personal knowledge of the quality both of existing buildings and of those which are yet to be constructed." (Preface, Book I, Morgan's translation) As a handbook, De architectura was wildly successful, and Vitruvius' advice was followed for centuries. Indeed, many of the illustrations included in this web site are taken from an edition of the ten books published during the Renaissance.
