— “A Step Away from Them,” Frank O’Hara
One view of criticism is that, whatever its ostensible subject and purpose may be, its real task is to slip the alert reader, by means of footnotes, odd comparisons, and incidental remarks, the directions to a party that it would be better not to make too public. An underground railroad of aesthetics, or ethics, or whatever was sitting where your particular bull session on the purpose of art saw the bottle stop spinning. I can say with some confidence that I’m not the only reader who looked into Jane Bowles because of a remark John Ashbery made, or at Henry Green because he was the subject of Ashbery’s MA thesis. And Ron Padgett was hardly the only poet to read the concluding lines of “A Step Away from Them” and feel a curiosity greater than could be satisfied by the Rexroth translation in the New Directions format that just fits in the breast pocket. Reverdy is labeled a cubist, and while it’s debatable whether it makes any sense to apply to poetry a term that underscores the motion of attention through time across the surface of a static work—poetry always already does that!—there are family resemblances. Typographically, his poems generally compress into the frame of a single page the findings of

Karen Volkman
Crash's Law
Poems Winner of the 1995 National Poetry Series, judged and selected by Heather McHugh.
Through myth, dream, and sensual detail, the poems in this remarkable first collection portray a hectic world plagued by a desire for psychic coherence. The book begins and ends in extremity: the opening poem, "Infernal," evokes the searing realm of an actual and metaphoric Miami, while the final poem, "New Heaven, New Earth," alludes to seeking a path through dense woods amid a blinding, obliterating blizzard. In their longing to define a set of terms for spiritual survival, these essentially lyric poems merge an evocation of contemporary consciousness with the oldest conventions of cry and song. "Volkman's poems are quintessentially . . . blood raw, soul-stinging, torqued by their forcefulness. A riveting, fresh collection."— Booklist "Volkman's style informs her work with an exciting confidence."— Publishers Weekly

Biography: Karen Volkman (1967- )
Karen Volkman was born in Miami in 1967 and attended the New College, Syracuse University and the University of Houston. She lives in Brooklyn, New York, and teaches at New York University. Volkman's first volume of poems, Crash's Law (1996), was selected by Heather McHugh as a 1995 National Poetry Series selection. The poems are set in Miami, blending a dreamlike disorientation with the realities of contemporary life. The book's jacket notes state that "the poems wrestle with the disjunctions and relations between mystery and reality, the metaphysical and the daily, intellect and eros, self and other, world and body." Her poems have appeared in a number of literary journals. Among her awards and honors is a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship in 1993 and residencies at both Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony.

05.07.02. A little something I wrote about a poetry reading The reading thatI attended was by karen volkman, in support of her new book, Spar .
http://www.pixiemartin.com/050702.htm
A little something I wrote about a poetry reading: The reading that I attended was by Karen Volkman, in support of her new book, Spar It is an odd experience to put a face and a voice to written words sometimes, and that was very much in evidence here. Unfamiliar with her work, I had no preconceived notions as of what to expect, beyond the glowing praise lauded upon her by the woman giving the introduction: Poet Laureate at the University of Chicago, winner of the Iowa Poetry Prize, printed by the U of I Press, studies in New York and France, blah de blah I almost expected Wonder Woman to come bounding out from behind some curtain, set to lead us in a highly emotional and spirit-charged poem-a-thon. Instead, a small, non-descript mouse of a woman stood up in the front row, and almost slinked to the podium with a book and folder in hand. Quietly, and rather anxiously, she explained that a lot of her work was influenced by the culture and poetry of France, and that she wrote untitled prose poems, titled lineated poems, and non-iambic sonnets. And then just as quietly, she launched into her reading. In an impossibly sing-songy monotone, she began to read her work, each poem rolling dispassionately off of her tongue, seeming to build towards something, but just ending mid-thought. Each poem felt like it wanted to be important and relevant, but was left dangling. Somehow the quality of each poem seemed to dissipate in a hazy fog of verbal diction, the experience being less colored by the content of the work than the hollow hiss and buzz of the microphone, the shuffling of papers and feet in the audience, and the slightly audible click-clack of her lips and tongue.
