Throop Roebling at left flank. Jack Monroe off to the right. Gio found a seat next to an important-looking man. I leaned against a pillar, at a 45 degree angle from where Vollmann would stand about 25 feet from the podium, right in his line of fire. It's odd that all these clean women have shown up to hear him read. Why's it odd? He skipped the first chapter How can Vollmann be dead?

STIM: In The Atlas , as in many of your books, the lines between fiction, journalism and autobiography are blurred. In what sense is The Atlas a work of fiction? Vollmann: My aim is always to write beautiful sentences and to create something that is a work of literature. The artistic value of the sentences, the paragraphs and the stories is far more important to me than any literal value they have. It's important to me that everything be literally true when I write a work of non-fiction but that's not the case with these stories. [In The Atlas ] some of the stories are completely true, some are partly true and some are completely made up. It doesn't really matter. Truth, then, is only important to you in your journalism? I'm not so anxious to write my autobiography. People will often assume that because something happened to one of my protagonists it must have happened to me. That's just not true. Sometimes it has happened to me but it doesn't really matter, you know? You might know me better than you think and you might not know me at all. However, you, William T. Vollmann, are often present in your stories. Sometimes you even use your first name...

Om "Avant-pop"-litteratur En kortare version publicerad i Dagens Nyheter I Steve Ericksons Arc d’X nödvändigt Hela tiden faller askan från slavbålet över texten, som ett svart regn. Över Jefferson. Över läsaren. Science Fiction? Dokumentärroman? Surrealism?

CHAPTER 13 COUNSEL'S PREPARATION FOR TRIAL It would be a mistake to believe that Bethea's attorneys did not care what happened to him. It is true that they were not paid for their services to an indigent client, since this was considered their dutysomewhat a return to the state for the privilege of practicing law. Nonetheless, they understood the seriousness of the charge and the impending irrevocable nature of the penalty likely to be imposed. Before the trial, William W. "Bill" Kirtley and William Wilson, at their own expense, drove to the Jefferson County Jail to interview Bethea, in an attempt to fashion a defense, but their client ultimately proved to be uncooperative. Bethea told Kirtley that he had signed one confession because he was threatened with a black jack and another confession because he was "doped." Bethea insisted on pleading not guilty at trial, but the various inconsistencies in his version of the facts produced frustration for the lawyers. Kirtley decided to move the court for a change of venue, which meant that he wanted the trial to be conducted in another county. To support a motion for a change of venue, the attorneys were required to present affidavits signed by two people who were willing to state that the defendant could not obtain a fair trial due to excessive publicity. Two people were located who signed affidavits, but the two later tore up their statements, leaving counsel for the defense with nothing upon which to base their motion.

    THE 'REAL' REAL.
[AVAILABLE SINCE: 18 JUNE, 2002] I need to talk to you about irony for a few minutes. There is a common and falsely held belief among the more thoughtful members of the smug t-shirt generation - myself included - that it is far superior to be in a "real" moment than one that started as real but is now only appreciated through an ironic filter. To explain this theory, I'll use the example of the Cocktail Lounge. To begin with, when I speak of Cocktail Lounges I don't mean the new generation of bars that call themselves lounges. You know - rusty lighting, fashion-mohawked bartenders, crappo drum-n-bass, white leather stools, expensive chartreuse cocktails, and a faint but distinctive German aroma. I am thinking of the well-preserved post-war Cocktail Lounges where hobos eat pickled eggs and whores count their change. These bars often serve two kinds of liquor - brown and clear - and feature bulb-lit signs behind the bar advertising beers no longer available outside of mining towns. More often than not, the Cocktail Lounge has three immediately attractive qualities, missed by their intended clientele but craved by the younger, more ironic set waiting to descend upon them:
  • A great old sign outside (usually depicting line art of a martini glass and a few hiccup bubbles)
  • Potentially cheap cocktails
  • A jukebox that makes you go, "holy shit - these guys have Hank Williams, Sr. AND the theme song from
