The popular MICA Gun Club is notable for its very artistic web site with tributesto authors Hunter S. Thompson, william Burroughs and william T. vollman.

The Return of College Gun Clubs by Dr. Michael S. Brown Special to Right Turn Few would deny the shift in attitudes about guns that has taken place since the election of 2000. One interesting sign is the resurgence of college gun clubs. Just a few years ago, the idea of college students starting a gun club would have invoked universal horror among administrators and politically correct student organizations. Even now, they sometimes attract the ire of the traditional liberal media, as was the case last week with the Second Amendment Sisters at Mt. Holyoke College. The New York Times published a misogynistic op-ed, “Chicks With Guns,” decrying the fact that the women of Mt. Holyoke College might have an interest in armed self-defense and implying that only “country hicks” are comfortable with guns. But something has changed. Student gun clubs are now springing up at schools that could never be called rural or conservative. Law student Alexander Volokh founded the Harvard Law School Target Shooting Club last fall. It now boasts about 115 members who enjoy shooting together at nearby ranges.

We are happy to announce the coming of three more books which we feel you will like because they are being created by people you like and we like even more:
Edited by Paul Collins And so begins an odyssey into the heart of wartime Berlin, and a plunge into a harrowing year of solitary confinement and imprisonment at Ruhleben, a horsetrack-turned-internment camp that is now considered the model for Germany's concentration camps. Starving and freezing, British prisoners housed in Ruhleben's horse stables tried to recreate productions of The Mikado from memory, and held university classes in the face of disease and a tyrannical commandant. After an escape in broad daylight, and a perilous dash across the German countryside to the Dutch border, Pyke returned home at the age of 20 to write To Ruhleben And Back , the first eyewitness account of a German concentration camp. New York Times The Times (London) Returned to print for the first time since 1916. MARCEL DZAMA: THE BERLIN YEARS Marcel Dzama is a very young Canadian artist who might very well change everything we know about art that involves alligators and men in bear costumes holding guns. Dzama is from Winnipeg, and his work shows frequently in New York and elsewhere. He is also the founder of the Royal Art Lodge, a Canadian art group that gathers around and creates hundreds of drawings in hours and sells them for $25 each.

Totally Juicy Quotes
Compiled by: Alex Sandell
Ever look at your life from thirteen different angles and still see that it sucks? Ever come to terms with the fact that you keep going because your life doesn't suck quite as bad as everyone else's? Ever look for some kind of message? A reason to be here? Ever feel like you'll never fit in, and everyone is staring at you from the same thirteen angles that made you question the validity of your existence in the first place? I know the feeling. And every time I want some answers, I look to these quotes. They never actually explain anything, but they do help me remember that there are others out there just as fucked up as me. And that makes perfect sense, so I go on with my life. I finally got up the nerve to open up my musty quote book and share some of my favorite quotes with all of you. Hope you enjoy 'em. If you don't, I suggest you run out, look at the world around you, and pick up a clue. Enjoy! "Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center. Big, undreamed of things - the people on the edge see them first. I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over."
-Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

COVER STORY
BY SAM DEARHEART A crystal eye sees the crystal mind; seeks the crystal shore. And so on. A discovery. A correlation. A shift. Bliss, and pain. The language is altared now, but the heart is still the cradle. Installation and performance artist Marshal Weber has more than a passing interest in sacrifice and memory. For some of you there will be a bit of a leap in ideas there. A visit to the shallows should clear that up. Most of us are familiar with the search for the Northwest Passage - that imposing, ice-laden thoroughfare through the frozen Arctic and the subject of a great deal of folklore. Expeditions that sought to chart a navigable route to the riches of China and East India met with failure again and again. History books are full of recountings of voyages like the one led by Danish Captain Jens Munk. He set out to unravel the mysteries of the Passage in 1619. Reaching Hudson's Bay in late August, he was forced to winter at the mouth of the Churchill River. Sixty-one of 64 crew members perished. Subsequent attempts met with varying degrees of failure, but ever onward pressed the Northern Europeans as the glimmer of untold wealth twinkled in their eyes. But the voyage that has sparked the greatest interest left the shores of the British Isles in May of 1845, captained by Sir John Franklin. A University of Alberta team's 1981 discovery of part of a bleached human skull just off the coast of King William Island led to three subsequent scientific expeditions, during which were found the fully intact frozen remains of three sailors from the ill-fated Franklin Expedition. The discovery of these "early Victorian ice men" gave the first significant insight into the events that led to the destruction of what some historical renditions refer to as "the greatest enterprise in the annals of Polar Exploration."

http://www.freewilliamsburg.com/may_2001/vollmann.html
The Royal Family
(Published by Viking, August 2000) I met Bill Vollmann in 1990. I had read Rainbow Stories and read a few stories of his in Conjunctions . I lived in San Francisco at the time, and except for a few people and friends, nobody knew who he was. Vollmann had lived in San Francisco off and on since 1981, but I had no idea how to contact him. I found out later that he was living in New York City at this time and was writing Fathers and Crows.
I asked a few papers in the Bay Area about doing an article on Vollmann. They weren't interested, because he wasn't part of the PC fads. In 1993 and 1994, I finally got to do some interviews with Vollmann and I saw him a lot during these years. Many of these magazines were apprehensive about doing anything about him, but I soon made them believers.
I remember one time when I met Bill in Noe Valley. We walked down to Mission Street and all the way to the 16th Street Bart Station, talking about the hotels and the people who would later show up in The Royal Family . Today you see articles in the Bay Area newspapers and magazines much as you see articles about lesser writers such as Amy Tan and Anne Lamont, who have been over-praised and had too much attention given. I mean if some lesbian built a table, as long as it worked, as was a nice looking table, I wouldn't care who built it. The Royal Family is a novel about two brothers. Henry a detective who is looking for the Queen of the Whores. John a lawyer who is thinking about the loss of his Wife, Irene.

Somebody stole my secrets, säger hon. Somebody stole my secrets. Det är först dagen efter som den unge mannen förstår att hon menade ”cigarettes”. Scenen återfinns ungefär mitt i William T Vollmanns storartade och märkliga roman The Rifles (1994), den hittills senaste i sviten Seven Dreams: a book of North American landscapes . Romanserien omfattar i nuläget tre band, förutom The Rifles även The Ice-shirt (1990) och Fathers and Crows (1992). Det ska bli sju. I all tysthet har han åstadkommit en ny sorts roman.
