Conversations with Margaret Walker
Edited by Maryemma Graham
"I read somewhere in Newsweek where Margaret Walker is one of those moral writers and that is supposed to be a form of derision. But to me, I could not have a greater compliment."
Photo credit: Diana Young Margaret Walker (19151998) began her writing career as a poet in the late 1930s. But she was cast into the limelight in 1966 when her novel Jubilee was published to wide critical and commercial acclaim. In interviews ranging from 1972 to 1996, Conversations with Margaret Walker captures Walker's voice as she discusses an incredibly wide range of interests. The same erudition, wit, and love of language on display in Jubilee comes through in conversations, as well as her sense of moral authorityimbued by a resonant Christian humanismand her attention to historical detail. In a long 1972 conversation with fellow poet Nikki Giovanni, Walker argues about the tribulations and triumphs of motherhood, the presence of black women in literature, and race relations in American culture from 1900 to the present. With Marcia Greenlee in 1977, she talks extensively about her family's history and her love of botany. In several of the interviews, her friendship with Richard Wright rises to the forefront. Even in her interviews with Claudia Tate and John Griffin Jones, in which the interviewers try to direct the conversations toward the mechanics and thought processes behind Walker's writing, the talks often sweep into broader issues of African American culture, family history, and the past's influence on the present.

77. Jubilee, By Margaret Walker Alexander
Jubilee, by margaret walker Alexander. It is a novel, with a fine narrative flow. The protagonist, Vyry, is based on margaret walker’s greatgrandmother.
http://www.wual.ua.edu/bookreviews/jubilee.html
Jubilee , by Margaret Walker Alexander Not long ago there was a great literary brouhaha over the publication of The Wind Done Gone , the perhaps too imitative send-up of Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind . That whole controversy was ugly and unnecessary, for there has been in print since 1966 a superb novel of life among the slaves and freedmen of the Deep South, the novel Jubilee by Margaret Walker Alexander. Margaret Walker, who was the first African American woman to win the Yale Younger Poets Prize for her book For My People in 1942, was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1915, received a B.A. from Northwestern in 1935, and then did her graduate work at the University of Iowa, where this novel was her doctoral dissertation. She worked at Jubilee slowly, carefully, from 1942 to 1966, researching every facet of mid-nineteenth century life in Georgia and Alabama. At the level of realistic detail the novel is unimpeachable. We learn how people farmed, how they cooked and what they ate, at every level of society. We learn about blacksmithing and carpentry and healing with roots and herbs. We learn about the economics of plantation life and sharecropping. We learn what rich and poor wore and, in the case of the poor, how they made what they wore. We learn of slaves’ superstition and voodoo, about the Underground Railroad, how slaves escaped, or at least attempted to, and what happened when they were caught.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
When she won a major award (the Yale Younger Poets Award), Walker was put in the public eye, but her writing always had a public dimension to it. Students might want to explore the pressures a writer would face if he or she were called upon to speak from more than a singular perspective. Can general experience form an urgent literary message? Can the students detect any change in Walker's style from the earlier poems and those published in the 1980s? In the language of her novel, Jubilee , the rhetoric is shaped in part by a need to be informative about a subject that many people had never explored or even considered. In her poems, the use of "public" forms of expressionchants, litanies, and sermonsto generate structure as well as feeling should be explored and compared/contrasted with the novel.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
Freedomin all its simplicity and complexityis clearly the main subject of Walker's work. Much of her writing is informed by the experience of the Great Depression (she was fourteen years old when the stock market collapsed), and so racial freedom and economic freedom are intermingled in her consciousness. In some ways, the promise of post- Reconstruction political freedom for African-Americans (and equally important, the nonfulfillment of that promise) stands behind her "call" to both the future and the past. The concern with hope and tradition neither being ultimately satisfying by itself, but both being indispensable for a full consciousness of the story of her peopleis a personal focus as well as a subject matter she must engage.
