B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) - in full Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace British novelist, playwright, and journalist who produced popular detective and suspense stories and was in his time "the king" of the modern thriller. Wallace's literary output - 175 books, 24 plays, and countless articles and review sketches - have undermined his reputation as a fresh and original writer. Moreover, the author was a wholehearted supporter of Victorian and early Edwardian values and mores, which are now considered in some respects politically incorrect. In England in the 1920s Wallace was said to be the second biggest seller after the Bible. "This little autobiography is in itself a tribute to the system under which we live. There cannot be much wrong with the society which made possible the rise of J.H. Thomas or Edgar Wallace, that gave 'Jamie' Brown the status of a king in Scotland and put Robertson at the War Office as Chief of the Imperial General Staff." (from Wallace's introduction to his autobiography

Edgar Wallace (- 1933) The most celebrated old boy of our church school, St Alfege with St Peter's, Edgar Wallace was born at 7 Ashburnham Grove, Greenwich. His mother, Polly Richards, a touring company actress, promptly gave him to be fostered by the Freeman family who had a four-roomed cottage in Norway Court, off Thames Street, which was already bursting with 10 children. In this household the child christened Edgar Horatio Wallace became Dick Freeman, son of George Freeman, a fish porter at Billingsgate market. He grew up restless, street-wise, obsessed by the theatre with whole scenes of Shakespeare in his head. By his own account, Wallace was a difficult pupil at St Alfege with St Peter's ("I gave the infants class a miss"). It was Sunday School which introduced him to the pleasures of fiction.

At the age of 11, Wallace began an outstanding Fleet Street career by selling newspapers at Ludgate Circus at a spot now commemorated by a plaque. The motivation to achieve better things arrived with the discovery of his real name and father - Edgar, the son of a celebrated Victorian theatrical family. His second name, Horatio, was taken from Hamlet His talent emerged first as a writer of popular songs whilst serving in the West Kent Regiment. Posted to South Africa in 1896, he was soon to make his name as "The Soldier Poet". Buying himself out of the army, he made an easy transition to Reuters Correspondent and then War Correspondent of

THE EDGAR WALLACE SOCIETY
was founded in 1969 by Penelope Wallace
Edgar Wallace's youngest daughter, with the primary mission
To bring together all who have an interest in her father's life and work;
To keep his name alive in the memories of older readers;
To introduce new generations to his stories.
How to join the Edgar Wallace Society
Over the past thirty years membership of the Edgar Wallace Society has spread into over 20 countries with members including collectors of first editions - these who specialise in signed copies, original dust jackets, ephemera related to Edgar Wallace's activities in journalism, theatre and films - plus many who are just readers of his stories and do not mind the edition or condition of a book as long as it is readable.
From its start until the end of 1984 Penelope Wallace organized the Edgar Wallace Society herself. It was because of her personality and due to her many contacts throughout the World that many Edgar Wallace -enthusiasts became members of the Society. After handing over to a new organizer she remained president of the Edgar Wallace Society until her death in January 1997. It is now being orgainsed by Penelope's daughter Penelope.
The Edgar Wallace Society holds meetings at Edgar Wallace related locations, e.g. The London Press Club, The Edgar Wallace Pub in London or the former British Lion Film Studios in Beaconsfield. Most recently special theatre productions and showings of rare films have been part of these events.
