Robert Penn Warren
A Biography
By Joseph Blotner
Random House, $30
ISBN 0394569571 Review by Roger Bishop Robert Penn Warren (1905-1989) was one of the twentieth century's most eminent American men of letters. He was a distinguished novelist and poet, literary critic, essayist, short story writer, and coeditor of numerous textbooks. He was a founding editor of The Southern Review . He was a popular teacher at Yale and other schools. Also, "Red" Warren, as he was known to his friends, and Cleanth Brooks influenced the teaching of literature to a generation of college students through their advocacy of close textual reading or, as it was popularly known, the New Criticism. Warren hated that term. Not a system, he wrote, "but intelligence, tact, discipline, honesty, sensitivity these are the things we have to depend on, after all, to give us what we prize in criticism, the insight." Warren received many honors including three Pulitzer prizes, one for fiction ( All the King's Men , 1946) and two for poetry ( Promises , 1957, and Now and Then , 1978), still the only person to win in both categories. He also received the prestigious National Medal for Literature and the Bollingen Prize for Poetry, a MacArthur Prize "genius" grant, and was named the country's first Poet Laureate in 1986. Warren was able to achieve as much as he did while overcoming formidable obstacles the loss of sight in his left eye and a difficult and painful first marriage.

Robert Penn Warren, America's first Poet Laureate, three-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, founder of the New Criticism, and one of the most prolific American poets of the twentieth century, wrote more about race than perhaps any other white literary figure of his generation. His was a crucial voice speaking to other white southerners fearful of the impact of integration on their way of life. Tracing connections between his changing views on racial politics and his varying poetic theories and themes, Anthony Szczesiul offers a new, revisionary reading of Warren's diverse and extensive canon of poetry.
Szczesiul delineates the political and ideological implications of Warren's evolving aesthetic, revealing that Warren's poetry was in an intensive and ongoing dialogue with its changing social and historical contexts. Politically, Warren made the dramatic transition from a segregationist to an integrationist position. Poetically, his career successfully bridges the modern and postmodern eras of 20th-century American poetry. Szczesiul demonstrates that Warren's work evolved not simply as a natural consequence of artistic maturity and development but through difficult negotiations with issues of self and identity, politics and aesthetics, individual will and social change, and race and cultural pluralism. He maintains that Warren's aesthetic conflicts become especially apparent when we consider his poetry alongside his racial politics.

Robert Penn Warren: An Appreciation
By Philip Vassallo
Did I clamber these miles of distance
Only to quiver now in identity?
You are yourself only by luck, disaster, or chance,
And only alone may believe in your reality.
To describe in brief Warren's remarkable life and work would be to ignore his essence as one of American history's few renaissance men. Among the many honors he received were three Pulitzer prizes, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and, in 1986, recognition as the first Poet Laureate of the United States. Besides writing poetry, fiction and nonfiction prolifically on numerous subjects, he was for 45 years a professor of English literature and playwriting at Southwestern, Vanderbilt, Louisiana State, Minnesota, and Yale. While in those positions, he helped edit landmark textbooks on fiction, poetry, and writing based on a controversial "new criticism" approach to literature, which would pave the way for generations of scholars to come. Warren’s Early Years Warren was born on April 24, 1905 in Guthrie, Kentucky, which he described as a small town of 1,500 set in the rolling farmlands, woodlands and streams of the Cumberland Valley, "a country well adapted to the proper pursuits of boyhood." He often spoke of his maternal grandfather, whom he idolized, a Confederate officer during the Civil War and a tobacco farmer. Warren spent his boyhood summers with him and marveled at the old man's literary interests. He enjoyed when his grandfather would read history and poetry to him, moments that would affect him for the rest of his life.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Understanding Robert Penn Warren Grimshaw presents an overview of Warren's life and his literary criticism, the latter offering a lens through which readers can gain a better understanding of Warren's fiction, poetry, and drama. In addition to providing thorough readings of Warren's fiction and poetry, Grimshaw explores Warren's little-examined contributions as a playwright. Grimshaw renders a fresh perspective on Warren's plays as he points out the profound influence of William Shakespeare, the impact of such nineteenth-century authors as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Thomas Hardy, and Warren's connection to such twentieth-century writers as T. S. Eliot and John Crowe Ransom.

In a Dark Time ...
The Eye Begins to See October 19, 2001 Times Winged Charriot PARADOX OF TIME
I. GRAVITY OF STONE AND ECSTASY OF WIND
Each day now more precious will dawn,
And loved faces turn dearer still,
And when sunlight is withdrawn,
There, over the mountain's black profile,
The western star reigns
In splendor, benign, arrogant,
And the fact that it disdains
You, and your tenement Of flesh, should instruct you in The paradox of Time, And the doubleness wherein The fleshly glory may gleam. Sit on the floor with a child. Hear laugh that creature so young. See loom its life-arch, and wild With rage, speak wild words sprung From vision, and thus atone For all folly now left behind. Learn the gravity of stone. Learn the ecstasy of wind. Robert Penn Warren in Rumor Verified I know that this "tenement of flesh" is all too temporary. I learned it in Vietnam, leaving too many friends behind. The media has never let me forget it. I know all too well the gravity of stone. My grandson Gavin helps me rediscover the "ecstasy of wind," forcing me to live in the moment. He has no name for me, but when he sees me he reaches out his arms to be picked up. That's name enough for me, a print-oriented bastard who surely spends too much of his life looking for meaning in words.

W ITHIN the confined universe of commercial literature it is not uncommon to recognize in the writing of one author an allusion or event recalling the work of another. References are a natural way for writers to pay tribute to peers and predecessors. One well-known tribute in American literature comes near the end of The Catcher in the Rye , when Holden Caulfield finds and erases an obscenity scrawled in a school stairwell, an obvious tip of the literary cap by J. D. Salinger to F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose Nick Carraway, twenty years earlier, was dismayed to find an epithet in the same spirit etched on Jay Gatsby's steps in The Great Gatsby
Occasionally, however, a work comes along in which the motivation for literary cap-tipping seems less straightforward. In such a work references and passages found in a previously published volume are echoed so insistently as to leave the reader wondering whether the similarities constitute a deliberate though unacknowledged homageor not.
Jay McInerney's ambitious new novel of the American South is such a work: it contains such an uncanny series of likenesses to Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All the King's Men (1946) that to attempt a comparison of the two novels becomes almost irresistible.

Contrast the two sides of Willie Stark.

One side of Willie Stark is power-hungry and goes out to get what he wants, while the other side is the side he wants his constituents to see: a family man with a wife and a son and an old father still living in his old farmhouse just like everyone else. The farmhouse symbolizes Willie Stark: it looks average to the passerby, but carefully hidden from strangers are modern improvements to add comfort. Describe what readers learn about Jack Burden.

The Non-Existent Lorenzo Milam RALPH: Just read your article on Robert Penn Warren - mostly agree about poetry, totally disagree that the Cass Mastern papers are not an integral part of the story of Jack Burden and Willie Stark. A careful reading will also reveal that Anne's affair with Willie is not only not out of character but also essential to the unfolding of the novel. Delighted to see that others are still reading and teaching this great book. Betty H. Moss

Go to the original review Subject: The FOLIO arrived today. RALPH: An hour or two after the completion of the fact, it suddenly came into my head to be aware that I had, once again, walked into the house from the mailbox with the magazine, seated, myself comfortably, and read every page and word before stirring toward any other pursuit. Don't know what this signifies, but wanted you to know. None of the other publications that arrive here have that effect (The New Yorker, The Economist, Rolling Stone, five or six sailing magazines), nor do I necessarily understand it. Possibly a phenomenon resembling an impedance match.
