Decline and Fall (1928)
Opening Lines:
Mr Sniggs, the Junior Dean, and Mr Postlethwaite, the Domestic Bursar, sat alone in Mr Sniggs' room overlooking the garden quad at Scone College. From the rooms of Sir Alastair Digby-Vane-Trumpington, two staircases away, came a confused roaring and breaking of glass. They alone of the senior members of Scone were at home that evening, for it was the night of the annual dinner of the Bollinger Club. The others were all scattered over Boar's Hill and North Oxford at gay, contentious little parties, or at other senior common-rooms, or at the meetings of learned societies, for the annual Bollinger dinner is a difficult time for those in authority.

22. The Capture Of Campion, Evelyn Waugh
By evelyn waugh.
http://www.cin.org/campcapt.html
EVELYN WAUGH The Capture of Campion See also Campion's Brag Blessed Edmund Campion (1540-1581) had a distinguished career at Oxford and could have won renown for himself in several fields had he chosen, but he preferred to go abroad and become a Jesuit. He returned to England with Father Robert Persons, S.J., and after a brief but dramatic apostolate, was captured at Lyford Grange on July 17, 1581. There followed the usual farce of a trial and execution at Tyburn on December 1, 1581. All went well at Lyford. Campion behaved with complete discretion; he refused to preach or to be displayed in any way to the neighbours; he conferred with the good women, quietly, one by one, said Mass for them early next day, and departed unobtrusively towards Oxford in the company of Father Collington, before anyone outside the house got wind of his arrival. Lyford, with its nuns and its two chaplains, was the religious centre of the district. That afternoon there were callers. Catholic gossip began, and the women could not contain their news; the famous Father Campion had been there; he had said this and that; he had dressed in such a way; this was how he had heard confessions; it was thus he had said Mass; they might have passed him on the road; he was barely thirty miles away at the moment. The neighbours were chagrined at what they had missed; how could the women have been so churlish as to keep their guest to themselves?

Evelyn Waugh
"He's supposed to have a particularly high-class style: 'Feather-footed through the plashy fen passes the questing vole' ... would that be it?" "Yes," said the Managing Editor. "That must be good style." from Scoop
The major English comic novelist Evelyn Arthur St. John Waugh , b. London, Oct. 28, 1903, d. Apr. 10, 1966, wrote some of the most brilliant and bitingly satirical novels of his day. His formal innovations, notably the assimilation of several inconsequential plots into an ordered whole, and his love for the bizarre and for black humor have influenced a generation of younger writers. After graduating from Oxford, Waugh studied art and taught school. He became a convert to Roman Catholicism in 1930. Later, as a reporter, he covered the Italo-Ethiopian War (1935-36), an experience that was given fictional form in Scoop (1938). When World War II broke out, Waugh joined the Royal Marines and later the Royal Horse Guard, serving in North Africa, Crete, and Yugoslavia. Upon his discharge he retired to Somerset, which he made his home until his death. A high degree of sophistication and a caustic wit displayed in highly polished, deceptively simple prose are the marks of such works as

Decline and Fall
Penguin 1963, 1967, 1937 A book review by Danny Yee When I read The Loved One at school I absolutely loathed it and, while I did enjoy Brideshead Revisited , it was not enough to induce further exploration. Recently, however, I have read three more of Waugh's books. Helena , a "biography" of Constantine's mother, is a failure as a historical novel. For one thing, it is tendentiously Christian (Catholic), pushing twentieth century parodies of Arianism and gnosticism back into the fourth century as straw-men. More tellingly, it never really conveys any feel for the period and doesn't offer much in the way of humour to compensate. Parts of Decline and Fall , Waugh's first novel, and some of the stories in Work Suspended are funny, but much of the humour involved seems highly artificial to me, and it has certainly dated (as became clear when I discussed Waugh with an English native of my parents' generation). Perhaps this kind of humour just doesn't age well, and it's interesting to speculate as to how well Douglas Adams (say) will survive the next fifty years. 18 May 1995

Waugh, Evelyn Arthur St. John , English writer, considered the greatest satirist of his generation. Educated at Oxford, he was briefly an art student and a teacher but spent much of his time traveling. He served with distinction in World War II. Waugh burst upon the literary scene with a group of hilarious novels satirizing 20th-century life with savage and sophisticated wit; they include Decline and Fall Vile Bodies (1930), and A Handful of Dust (1934). He was even more mordantly satiric in Black Mischief (1932) and Scoop (1938), both treating Africa, and Put Out More Flags (1942), a fictional comment on the English war effort. His most popular novel, Brideshead Revisited (1945), recounts the spiritual regeneration of a wealthy Catholic family. In a novella, The Loved One (1948), he examined the mortuary customs of Hollywood, Calif. His series of World War II novels includes Men at Arms Officers and Gentlemen (1955), and The End of the Battle (1961). In addition to these and other works of fiction, he wrote amusing travel books, biographies of Rossetti (1928) and Edmund Campion (1935), and the autobiographical

Waugh said of his work: 'I regard writing not as investigation of character but as an exercise in the use of language, and with this I am obsessed. I have no technical psychological interest. It is drama, speech and events that interest me.' Mark Amory called Evelyn Waugh 'one of the five best novelists in the English language this century', while Harold Acton described him as having 'the sharp eye of a Hogarth alternating with that of the Ancient Mariner'.
