The Wells Family

My great great grandparents, Captain Mike Wells, circa 1870, and his wife, Christina Johnston, in the late 19th century. Both were from Nova Scotia; he was from Guysborough, she from adjacent Antigonish.

for a family tree starting with Captain Mike's grandfather, Michael Wells(born circa 1770) of Wexford, Ireland.
for an interesting story told by their son, my great grandfather Edward Michael "Pa" Wells. Captain Mike also had a brother, Captain William N. Wells, who was lost at sea. What happened to his eight orphaned children I don't know.
"January 29th, 1897: Capt. William N. Wells, master of the schooner Helen G. Wells, washed overboard from the schooner on LeHave bank. He was a widower, 48, a native of Guysboro, N. S., and left eight children."

This picture is of the SILVA FAMILY, late nineteenth century. It shows a formal setting, and probably dates to 1895 or 1896. The father is Joaquim Silva, the wife is Frances Clara (Cordoza) Silva, and their four children are a son, Manuel, and three daughters, Caroline "Aunt Carrie," Helen (Nana Wells, my great garandmother) and Mary "Aunt Mae." Joaquim and Frances Clara, called Francesca, emigrated separately from the Portugese Azore Islands; certainly from Saint Michael, possible one came from Faial. They settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Dot Wells Ryan, born in 1908, knew both of her Silva grandparents. Dot once told me that Grampa Silva had a hole in the flesh of his back, into which a young child like Dot could insert her fist up to the wrist. (!)

Census Records 1841 - 1881
(last updated 30.10.2001)
  • Return to Home Page
  • A census of the UK population has been taken every 10 years from 1801, but the 1841 census was the first to record individual names. These records provide a 'snapshot' of the people in a particular house on a particular day, and can provide useful insights into family relationships. However it must be borne in mind that visitors to the house will also have been included, and any members of the family who were away from home at the time of the census (eg visiting relatives, in the forces, in prison) will not have been recorded at their home address.
The 1881 census has been fully indexed by both name and location, and is available on micro fiche. A country-wide search of this index for Bagust has been conducted, and the results are shown in the table below (1881 Census), although I suspect that they are still incomplete. The material for other years have been provided by many other contributors, and is even more patchy, not having been systematically indexed. So far I have not checked any of the entries against the original records.

Features Paperback Reader Reviews Dwelling place for the Soul, January 28, 2003 Reviewer: A reader from Syracuse, NY United States An unexpected surprise and joy, well scripted and paced, this book has got to be made into a movie. A Cajun adventure of the heart, with unsophisticated but never crude characters, and a story about not giving up on love. These characters are real people, middle-aged (like me), who love, sweat, fear, laugh, and connive. Logan is a 40 something widower, and single father, who has turned to the swamp for solace and escape, only to find deliverance of a kind he never expected, nor will you. He is a swamp fox, both agile and deliberate, depending on whether he is dealing with insane, depraved, or violent situations, as the need arises. I loved this book. Now, is Ken Wells related to Rebecca Wells, the Ya-Ya Queen?

    CREYGHTONE, KEN AND KIDDER
Dean Ralph Bathurst was appointed in 1670 when Creyghtone became bishop. Dr. Bathurst was a man of eminence, President of Trinity College Oxford, chaplain to the king, fellow of the Royal Society and one of the foremost scientists of his day. He was a long serving dean and saw four bishops come and go. Restoration both of the fabric of the cathedral and of the spirit took place during his tenure.
The saintly bishop Thomas Ken was appointed in 1685, the year of Monmouth's rebellion when puritan soldiers again wrought havoc in the cathedral and turned part of it into a stable. Some were finally imprisoned in the cloisters .The work of restoration had to be done all over again. Ken himself was for a time imprisoned in the Tower of London for refusing with six others to accept the repeal of the Act of Uniformity. He later refused to take the oath of allegiance to William and Mary because James II had not formally abdicated. He was forced to retire to Frome and is best remembered for his prayers and hymns and his charity to the poor.
Bishop Kidder who succeeded him was killed during the great storm of 1703 when two chimneystacks in the palace fell on the bishop and his wife asleep in bed. This same storm wrecked the Eddystone lighthouse and blew in part of the great west window in Wells.

WSJbooks.com Floating Off the Page: The Best Stories From The Wall Street Journal's 'Middle Column' Ken Wells, Editor FOR MORE than five decades, readers have been reveling in the unexpected, odd and amusing topics of The Wall Street Journal's front-page middle column, or "A-hed." Whether they’re features about current events, trends or just quirky facts and findings, each strikes its own particular chord with readers. Veteran Journal reporter and Page One editor Ken Wells presents some of the classic columns in an anthology, "Floating Off the Page: The Best Stories From The Wall Street Journal's Middle Column." Originally developed to give harried business readers a diversion from the day's business and economic news, the A-hed has evolved into a symbol of American feature writing, judged by readers as their favorite part of the paper. From the column’s debut story in 1941 a feature about the shortage of American flags due to a surge in patriotism during World War II to today’s stories of civilians narrowly escaping the Sept. 11 attacks, it continues to mirror cultural change. The ability to tell a story with wit and whimsy in 1,500 words or less as its biggest charm, the column contains the stories a reader unfamiliar with The Wall Street Journal wouldn’t expect to find in such an august publication. A 1971 Fortune magazine article on The Wall Street Journal helped to secure the A-hed's place as an icon of contemporary journalism by describing it as a story often so engaging and light "as almost to float off the page."

on featured books. WSJbooks.com A Conversation With Ken Wells Ken Wells, author of "Floating Off the Page," discusses the art of the middle column. How does the middle column manage to still captivate the readers of The Wall Street Journal, even after all these years? First of all, our readers know it's there and they count on it for a sweetener, the way a savvy diner relishes dessert. Second, because it still is a decentralized art, it reflects a rather contemporary view of the quirky side of the American and global socio-cultural landscape. It still seems fresh because it is fresh: it's reporters in the field, on the ground, at cocktail parties or church or garage sales, keeping their eyes open for A-hed possibilities. How did the idea for "Floating Off the Page" come about? How did you narrow down thousands of stories from the middle column when selecting them for this book? We sent out an all-cities e-mail asking for nominations. Probably a third or more of the stories in the book reflect a kind of consensus among the staff of what the universally admired "classics" were. (The Carrie Dolan story, for example.) I also queried past editors of the Journal who could remember memorable stories from say, the 1950s through the 1970s, and thus could guide me to some of those earlier "classics."
