Biography
Edith Wharton
Writer USA Born 24 Jan 1862
Died 11 Aug 1937
Edith Wharton was born Edith Newbold Jones in New York in 1862. A member of a distinguished New York family, she was educated privately in the United States and abroad. In 1885 she married Edward Robbins Wharton, who was 12 years her senior and from whom she was divorced in 1913. She spent long periods in Europe, where she gained her intimacy with numerous continental languages and settings for her books. From 1910 until her death she made her home in France. During the war she was an unflinching worker; in France she ran a workroom for unemployed skilled women workers in her quarter; she fed French and Belgian refugees in her restaurants below cost price; she took entire charge of 600 Belgian children who had to leave their orphanage at the time of the German advance. In 1915 the French government gave her the cross of the Legion of Honour. She died in 1937.
Edith Wharton was a unique American novelist, distinguished by her literary powers and at the same time by great popular appeal. She started writing in 1897, but it was not until 1905 that she had an outstanding success with 'The House of Mirth'. During her life she published more than 40 volumes: novels, stories, verse, essays, travel books and memoirs. While 'Ethan Frome' (1911), the stark New England tragedy, is possibly her best-known work, it is the least typical of her art. This found full expression in her 'society' novels, such as 'The Custom of the Country' and particularly 'The Age of Innocence' (1920), for which she won the Pulitzer Prize and in which she brilliantly analysed the changing scene of fashionable American life, and contrasted the manners of the New World with those of Old Europe. Other works include 'The Reef', 'Summer', and 'The Muse's Tragedy and Other Stories'.

Wharton, Edith Newbold Jones 1862-1937, American novelist, b. New York City, noted for her subtle, ironic, and superbly crafted fictional studies of New York society at the turn of the century. The daughter of a socially elect family, she was educated privately in New York and in Europe. In 1885 she married Edward Wharton, a Boston banker; after the first few years of marriage Edward Wharton became mentally ill, and the burden of caring for him fell upon his wife. Finally, in 1913, after she had settled permanently in France, Edith Wharton terminated the marriage by divorce. Her early stories and tales were collected in The Greater Inclination Crucial Instances (1901), and The Descent of Man The House of Mirth (1905) and The Age of Innocence Ethan Frome The Valley of Decision (1902), a historical novel of 18th-century Italy; The Custom of the Country Hudson River Bracketed (1929) and its sequel

    Wharton, Edith
(1862-1937), writer Born in New York, New York, on January 24, 1862, Edith Newbold Jones came of a distinguished and long-established New York family. She was educated by private tutors and governesses at home and in Europe, where the family resided for six years after the Civil War, and she read voraciously. She made her debut in society in 1879 and married Edward Wharton, a wealthy Boston banker, in 1885. Although she had had a book of her own poems privately printed when she was 16, it was not until after several years of married life that Wharton began to write in earnest. Her major literary model was Henry James, whom she knew, and her work reveals James's concern for artistic form and ethical issues. She contributed a few poems and stories to Harper's, Scribner's, and other magazines in the 1890s, and in 1897, after overseeing the remodeling of a house in Newport, Rhode Island, she collaborated with the architect Ogden Codman, Jr., on The Decoration of Houses . Her next books, The Greater Inclination (1899) and Crucial Instances (1901), were collections of stories.
