Foggy conditions can transform even familiar surroundings beyond recognition and artists have used fog and haze to depict the world around them in new and occasionally unexpected ways. Some, like Victor Pasmore , have used the shrouding effects of fog to reveal the underlying structure of the scene before them. Others, like Whistler , used mist to hide the defects of a landscape, transforming an industrialised view into a beautiful, dream-like vision. Painters from Claude to Monet have responded to the way in which clouds of fog capture and reflect light to stunning visual effect. Artists have also exploited these optical effects for emotional ends: in Millet’s stunning depiction of moonlight through mist the atmosphere fuses man with nature in an almost mystical manner. In sharp contrast is the oppresive smog that hangs over Lowry’s hellish vision of industrial decay. autumn changing seasons clouds constable courbet extremes fog and haze japanese printmakers martin rain rainbows the sea spring stormy moods summer sun as symbol temperature wind winter The Lake Laurence Stephen Lowry Thames below Westminster Claude-Oscar Monet ... Biographical Sketch
Leonard Russell, editor and literary anthologist, was born in London in 1906. He began his career in journalism at the DAILY TELEGRAPH registering the editor's incoming review copies. Cyril Lakin later made Russell an assistant when Lakin was appointed literary editor of the DAILY TELEGRAPH in 1929, and of the SUNDAY TIMES in 1933. When Russell succeeded Lakin literary editor of the SUNDAY TIMES in 1945, he contracted talents such as Cyril Connolly, Harold Hobson, Raymond Mortimer, and Hugh Trevor-Roper, who helped make the SUNDAY TIMES a leading voice in the literary community. He remained literary editor of the SUNDAY TIMES until 1954. In addition to these accomplishments, Russell founded THE SATURDAY REVIEW in 1941, worked briefly on GO magazine after leaving the SUNDAY TIMES, and later returned to the newspaper, where he edited a succession of serials that changed the character of Sunday journalism and increased the SUNDAY TIMES' circulation dramatically. Notable serializations under Russell's direction include Lord Montgomery's memoirs, Somerset Maugham's TEN NOVELS AND THEIR AUTHORS, and William Manchester's DEATH OF A PRESIDENT. In his later years Russell was involved in several publishing projects, including THE PEARL OF DAYS, an unofficial history of the SUNDAY TIMES.

The window originally in the old Chapel was etched by Laurence Whistler who stayed at the House in 1968. The Following is an extract from the Annual Report for 1968 produced by Miss Dorothy Raikes.
"The Chapel has been enriched by two engravings on the windows by Mr Laurence Whistler, when he and his wife spent a week at the Retreat House. On one pane there was the emphasis on the beauty of the year's seasons, Spring with its daffodils, Summer, the sheaf of wheat and opposite, the bundle of grapes - Bread and Wine of Life - Winter, the starlit sky. In the centre was the monogram of the name of Christ. On the opposite pane was engraved the words of Henry Vaughan:-
"They are all gone into the World of Light"
