By permission of the NLA Biography: Patrick White (b. London 1912, d. Sydney 1990), the first and to date only Australian writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature (1973), was born into a wealthy Australian graziers family with strong ties to England, and received his school education partly in Australia, partly at Cheltenham College, England. He then lived a few years in Australia, working as a jackaroo and preparing for university. At King's College, Cambridge, he studied French and German languages and literatures (1932-1935) and spent considerable time in France and Germany (particularly Hannover, the fictional Heimat of Voss and of Himmelfarb in Riders in the Chariot ). The experience of the Australian landscape on the one hand, and European literature and thought on the other were to become two major sources of influence on White's writing.

    • The collected essays, articles and speeches of the Nobel Prize winning novelist
    - Return to top of the page - Our Assessment: C+ : short pieces, characteristically strong, but mainly dealing with current events that are no longer very current. See our review for fuller assessment. The complete review 's Review The great authors and White is one of the great ones find, after their deaths, all their diverse and sundry writing collected. So White's letters now make a fine, fat volume (edited by his biographer David Marr) but before the letter collection came this thin volume of essays, speeches, and articles. They run the gamut, from his Nobel Lecture (which he did not personally deliver, as he did not travel to Stockholm to receive the prize) to a number of speeches against nuclear weapons and for the preservation of various parts of Sydney to a Credo. There are interesting titbits here. The Credo is fine, and there are some autobiographical details of interest in the Nobel speech and various others. However, there are also a number of pieces concerned with Australian politics that are dated and, for foreigners and those who are not Aussiephiles, of basically no interest whatsoever. Certainly the issues at issue are of significance, and White expresses his arguments well (and sometimes with an appealing bite to them), but it is not enthralling enough.

    White, Patrick
In fact I enjoyed every minute of my life at King's, especially the discovery of French and German literature. Each vacation I visited either France or Germany to improve my languages. I wrote fitfully, bad plays, worse poetry. Then, after taking my degree, the decision had to be made: what to do? It was embarrassing to announce that I meant to stay in London and become a writer when I had next to nothing to show. To my surprise, my bewildered father, who read little beyond newspapers and stud-books, and to whom I could never say a word if we found ourselves stranded alone in a room, agreed to let me have a small allowance on which to live while trying to write.
This exhilarating personal situation was somewhat spoilt by the outbreak of war. During the early, comparatively uneventful months I hovered between London and New York writing too hurriedly a second novel, The Living and the Dead. In 1940 I was commissioned as an air force intelligence officer in spite of complete ignorance of what I was supposed to do. After a few hair-raising weeks amongst the RAF greats at Fighter Command I was sent zigzagging from Greenland to the Azores in a Liverpool cargo boat with a gaggle of equally raw intelligence officers, till finally we landed on the Gold Coast, to be flown by exotic stages to Cairo, in an aeroplane out of Jules Verne.

White, Patrick Romancier australien (Londres, 1912 - Sydney, 1990).

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA White, Patrick Victor Martindale Australian writer. He did more than any other to put Australian literature on the international map. His partly allegorical novels explore the lives of early settlers in Australia and often deal with misfits or inarticulate people. They include The Aunt's Story (1948), written during his voyage back to Australia, The Tree of Man Voss (1957), based on the ill-fated 19th-century explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, and Riders in the Chariot (1961), exploring suburban life. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973. White became a fervent republican after the dismissal of the Gough Whitlam government in 1975, returning his Order of Australia in 1976, and supported conservation causes in his later years. White, a member of an established Australian pastoralist family, was born in London and educated in Australia and England. After graduating from Cambridge he lived and wrote in London and in 1940 joined the RAF as an intelligence officer. In the 1940s he returned to settle in Australia.

    Producers note
Sitemap Credits Bibliography Producer's note Patrick White was a great writer and an Australian. He is the only Australian writer yet to have won the Nobel Prize for literature. Many Australians though have not even heard of him and his work seems to have been pushed back into the unreachable shelves of bookcases. During his lifetime his writing was sometimes called 'unAustralian' and his style was criticised as being 'intellectual' meaning not for the ordinary Australian reader. The negative criticisms seem to have hung on even after his style and breadth of topic developed, and as the literary awards and comparisons came through. People still think Patrick White is a British writer and a boring one at that. I wish they could hear the raucous laughter he can cause a reader, the sighs of recognition and the rapture. I read my first Patrick White in 1971 when I first arrived in Australia. I reread The Tree of Man fifteen years later to see if it had the same impact. It did. I have since read and reread all his novels but one. I wish I could share the pleasure they have given me.

I am a 3rd year Ph.D. student in the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University in beautiful Ithaca, New York. My research interests all seem to fall under the general category of 'approximate proof'. That is, I'm concerned with things that can be trusted (or proven) quickly, but not inscrutably. This includes probabilistically-checkable-proofs (PCPs), result-checking, spot-checking, property testing. My advisor is Ronitt Rubinfeld. The field of computer science is in an exciting stage now, leaving its infancy in conceding that not all interesting questions can be solved precisely. Though some classicists skoff at the notion of approximate computation, a necessary evil which uncomfortably fills a vacancy until an optimal deterministic algorithm can be discovered, a more enlightened philosophy realizes that nothing is certain, even our own existence. But I have to go now.. South Park is on. I also play the piano and study celestial mechanics. And my favorite i-Mac color is "lime". And I love Ithaca. It is gorgeous. Selected papers: Tugkan Batu, Ronit Rubinfeld, Patrick White.
