THE DELAWARE TUNNEL? When the Benjamin Franklin Bridge opened in 1926, officials foresaw the need for a new fixed crossing between Philadelphia and Camden. The first plan - for a tunnel - was proposed by the Delaware River Tunnel Corporation. From 1928 to 1930, various bridge and tunnel proposals (Philadelphia-Camden and South Philadelphia-Gloucester) were submitted as countermeasures for constructing a toll bridge at the current site of the Delaware Memorial Bridge. The proposed bridge and tunnel locations were thought to be less obstructive to shipping and naval operations than the Delaware site downriver.
In 1934, the Delaware River Tunnel Corporation received legislative approval for a tunnel between South Philadelphia and Gloucester, near the current site of the Walt Whitman Bridge. Throughout the rest of the 1930's, officials sought to obtain $20 million in loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC). However, the outbreak of World War II postponed plans for the second crossing.
During the late 1940's, the Philadelphia City Planning Commission developed plans for an expressway network covering the Philadelphia-Camden metropolitan area, in anticipation of postwar traffic growth. The following two alternative plans emerged from the study:

Walt Whitman Wrote A Letter
February 9, 1888

Have you ever kept rewriting a story or poem because you just weren't satisfied with it? Walt Whitman wrote his poem about President Lincoln, "O Captain! My Captain!" in 1865, but he revised it in 1866, and again in 1871. After the wrong version of his poem was published in the Riverside Literature Series No. 32, Whitman wrote to the publishers on February 9, 1888. "Somehow you have got a couple of bad perversions in 'O Captain,'" he wrote, "I send you a corrected sheet." Do you know why Whitman wrote the poem about Abraham Lincoln?

I celebrate myself, and sing myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as
Good belongs to you.
I loafe and invite my soul,
I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass.
These lines, the beginning of the famous poem "Song of Myself," were written by Walt Whitman. This American poet, journalist, and essayist was born on May 31, 1819, in West Hills, New York. Whitman's style forever changed poetry around the world.

Walt Whitman and 19th-Century
Women Reformers
Sherry Ceniza Ceniza provides a dramatic rereading of Walt Whitman's poetry through the lens of 19th-century feminist culture. Sherry Ceniza argues that Whitman's editions of Leaves became progressively more radically 'feminist' as he followed the women's rights movement during the 1850s and that he was influenced by what he called the 'true woman of the new aggressive type . . . woman under the new dispensation.' Ceniza documents the progression of the National Woman's Rights movement through the lives and writings of three of its leaders- Abby Hills Price, Paulina Wright Davis, and Ernestine L. Rose. By juxtaposing the texts written by these women with Leaves, Ceniza shows that Whitman used many of the same arguments and rhetorical gestures as his female activist friends. The book also discusses the influence of women engaged in women's rights outside the National Woman's Rights organization. And Ceniza's opening chapter is devoted to a fresh interpretation of the life and thought of another strong-minded woman who influenced the poet's writing-Louisa Van Velsor Whitman, Walt Whitman's mother. Sherry Ceniza is Associate Professor of English at Texas Tech University.

    Whitman, Walt Whitman, Walt (Walter Whitman), , American poet, b. West Hills, N.Y. Considered by many to be the greatest of all American poets, Walt Whitman celebrated the freedom and dignity of the individual and sang the praises of democracy and the brotherhood of man. Career: Poet, essayist, short story writer, journalist, editor, printer, and educator The second of nine children, Whitman was born in 1819 on Long Island, New York, to Quaker parents. In 1823 the Whitmans moved to Brooklyn, where Whitman attended public school. At age eleven he left school to work as an office boy in a law office and then as a typesetter's apprentice at a number of print shops. Although his family moved back to Long Island in 1834, Whitman stayed in Brooklyn and then New York City to become a compositor. Unable to find work, he rejoined his family on Long Island in 1836 and taught at several schools. In addition to teaching, Whitman started his own newspaper, the Long Islander . He subsequently edited numerous papers for short periods over the next fourteen years, including the New York

    Walt Whitman: 1850-1900 The Idea of Wilderness
    Give Me the Splendid Silent Sun*
    by Walt Whitman, 1865

    Give me the splendid silent sun, with all his beams full-dazzling;
    Give me juicy autumnal fruit, ripe and red from the orchard;
    Give me a field where the unmow’d grass grows;
    Give me an arbor, give me the trellis’d grape;
    Give me fresh corn and wheat—give me serene-moving animals, teaching content;
    Give me nights perfectly quiet, as on high plateaus west of the Mississippi, and I looking up at the stars; Give me odorous at sunrise a garden of beautiful flowers, where I can walk undisturb’d; Give me for marriage a sweet-breath’d woman, of whom I should never tire; Give me a perfect child—give me, away, aside from the noise of the world, a rural, domestic life; Give me to warble spontaneous songs, reliev’d, recluse by myself, for my own ears only; Give me solitude—give me Nature—give me again, O Nature, your primal sanities! —These, demanding to have them, (tired with ceaseless excitement, and rack’d by the war-strife;)
