21. Candide: The Musical
A synopsis and information on the musical by Lillian Hellman, richard wilbur, and Leonard Bernstein (revised by Hugh Wheeler and Stephen Sondheim.)
http://www.theatrehistory.com/american/candide_001.html
CANDIDE Purchase The Movie The Cast Album Sheet Music Book by LILLIAN HELLMAN Lyrics by RICHARD WILBUR Music by LEONARD BERNSTEIN A revised one-act version includes a new libretto by HUGH WHEELER and additional lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM CANDIDE was first produced at the Martin Beck Theatre, New York, on December 1, 1956, with Robert Rounseville as "Candide," Max Adrian as "Pangloss," Barbara Cook as "Cunegonde," Louis Edmonds as "Maximilian," and Irra Petina as "Old Lady." A revised one-act version by Hugh Wheeler and Stephen Sondheim opened at the Chelsea Theatre Centre, Brooklyn, on December 19, 1973. V Making their escape, Candide and Cunegonde, along with the Old Lady, board a vessel heading for the New World, but, as luck would have it, the vessel is attacked by pirates, and Cunegonde, along with the Old Lady, is carried off for another round of ravishment. When he arrives in the New World, Candide is surprised to find both Paquette and Maximilian alive and sold into slavery. Candide brings them up-to-date on what has happened and swears that he will rescue Cunegonde once more and marry her. Maximilian, however, is still a Thunder-Ten-Tronck, and furious at the suggestion that his sister should marry a bastard, begins chasing Candide madly. Candide hides behind a statue and, as luck would have it, accidentally knocks the statue over, crushing Maximilian to death instantly.

A Fable
    Richard Wilbur
  • A Fable Securely sunning in a forest glade,
    A mild, well-meaning snake
    Approved the adaptations he had made
    For safety’s sake.
    He liked the skin he had—
    Its mottled camouflage, its look of mail,
    And was content that he had thought to add
    A rattling tail.
    The tail was not for drumming up a fight;
    No, nothing of the sort.
    And he would only use his poisoned bite As last resort. A peasant now drew near, Collecting wood; the snake, observing this, Expressed concern by uttering a clear But civil hiss. The simple churl, his nerves at once unstrung, Mistook the other’s tone And dashed his brains out with a deftly-flung Pre-emptive stone. Moral Security, alas, can give A threatening impression; Too much defense-initiative Can prompt aggression.

    Founded in 1997, the Richard Wilbur Society promotes discussion of the poetry, verse translations, and prose of Richard Wilbur (born 1921). The second Poet Laureate of the United States, and the former Chancellor and President of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Richard Wilbur has won the National Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize, the Bollingen Award, and every other major American literary award for his contributions to verse and the art of translation. Wilbur's poetry is widely regarded as a high achievement in American formal verse since the Second World War, and his translations of Moliere and Racine are brilliant, profound, and definitive.
    The Richard Wilbur Society sponsors events regularly at national conventions of the American Literature Association, the Modern Language Association, and various regional, national, and international meetings of scholars and literary critics. We share views on the interpretation of this poetry, its historical and cultural context, the modern New England poetic tradition, the situation of formal verse at the turn of the twenty-first century, and the complexities of major themes in the Wilbur canon. Membership in the Society is open to anyone with a serious interest in Wilbur's achievement, or in any of the above or related issues.
