OSCAR WILDE
"There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written or badly written. That is all." Birthplace

Dublin, Ireland
Education
At school in Ireland (the same one Beckett later attended) he was, according to contemporary accounts, "unpopular with his schoolmates, a large, ungainly boy with inert habits... untidy, inclined to flop about, slovenly in both appearance and dress"; his nickname was "Grey Crow". At Trinity College, Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford he shone at classics.

Wilde, Oscar The Artist as Critic Critical Writings of Oscar Wilde . Edited by Richard Ellman. xxviii, 446 p. 1968 LC: 82013361 //r91 Class: PR5812 Paper COBE $19.00tx 0-226-89764-8 Spring 1998 Although known primarily as the irreverent but dazzlingly witty playwright who penned The Importance of Being Earnest , Oscar Wilde was also an able and farsighted critic. He was an early advocate of criticism as an independent branch of literature and stressed its vital role in the creative process. Scholars continue to debate many of Wilde's critical positions. Included in Richard Ellmann's impressive collection of Wilde's criticism, The Artist as Critic , is a wide selection of Wilde's book reviews as well as such famous longer works as "The Portrait of Mr. W.H.," "The Soul Man under Socialism," and the four essays which make up Intentions The Artist as Critic will satisfy any Wilde fan's yearning for an essential reading of his critical work. "Wilde . . . emerges now as not only brilliant but also revolutionary, one of the great thinkers of dangerous thoughts."Walter Allen

Tributo a Oscar Wilde

Originaltitel: The Selfish Giant

The legend endures: Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde
A century after his death, who is the real Oscar Wilde - a witty Irishman abroad, or a political subversive as relevant now as 100 years ago? BBC News Online's Olive Clancy looks for an answer. "To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance," he said. Indeed, Oscar Wilde's witty self-praise underpins a long-running, if chequered love affair between the Irish writer and his public. Oscar Wilde's grave in Paris still attracts visitors
Wilde was born in Dublin in 1854 to Sir William Wilde, known as a good - if grubby - surgeon and even more so as a womaniser. His wife, Lady Jane, was a political intellectual and socialite who wrote poetry under the pen-name Speranza. The relationship between Wilde and his mother was close but difficult, and careered between resentment and outright adoration. Wilde was a brilliant student at both Dublin's Trinity College and at Oxford in England and went on to become the toast of London at the close of the 19th Century.

    Originaltitel: The Happy Prince
