She was born in Wisconsin, lived in Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and South Dakota (then Dakota Territory) with her family often at the front edge of the sweeping westward wave of pioneers. Only the influence of her mother, who wanted her girls to have an education and some stability, kept Laura's ever-restless father from continuing to move ever onward. Laura's life was not greatly different from many of the other young women who were her contemporaries, save that in her later years Laura revisited her childhood in memory, sharing her stories in a series of books that came to be known as "The Little House Books."

    Becoming Laura Ingalls Wilder
    The Woman behind the Legend
    John E. Miller
Although generations of readers of the Little House books are familiar with Laura Ingalls Wilder's early life up through her first years of marriage to Almanzo Wilder, few know about her adult years. Going beyond previous studies, Becoming Laura Ingalls Wilder focuses upon Wilder's years in Missouri from 1894 to 1957. Utilizing her unpublished autobiography, letters, newspaper stories, and other documentary evidence, John E. Miller fills the gaps in Wilder's autobiographical novels and describes her sixty-three years of living in Mansfield, Missouri. As a result, the process of personal development that culminated in Wilder's writing of the novels that secured her reputation as one of America' most popular children's authors becomes evident. Miller places Wilder's life firmly within its historical context. Building upon his analysis of her activities and writings and mining documentary sources, including various drafts of Wilder's novels, he shows not only the extent to which her writings emerged directly out of her own experiences as a girl and young woman, but also how they were shaped and embellished by artistic intent. Wilder depended heavily upon her daughter, Rose Wilder Lanean established novelist, biographer, and magazine writer in her own rightfor editing and polishing her manuscripts. Without Lane's encouragement, publishing connections, and example, the novels never would have been written.

Laura Ingalls Wilder has said that she and her sisters were busy and happy as children but loved Pa's stories the best. When Laura was 60 years old, she wrote her first book, Little House In The Big Woods, so those stories would not be lost. She thought about how she had seen the settling of the frontier the woods, Indian Territory of the Great Plains, the frontier towns, the coming of the railroad, and homesteading on the prairie. She thought of writing the story of her childhood in eight volumes that would cover each aspect of the American frontier. These became the Little House series.
    The Little House Series
    • Little House in the Big Woods . Pa, Ma, Mary, Laura, and Baby Carrie live in a log cabin in the big woods near Pepin, Wisconsin, in the 1870s. Little House on the Prairie . The Ingallses leave their cabin in the big woods and travel by covered wagon to Kansas Territory where they accidentally settle on land belonging to the Osage Indians. Farmer Boy . The story of Almanzo Wilder's boyhood growing up on a farm near Malone, New York.

    Little House on the Prairie
My fascination for the "going west" era stems from reading Laura Ingalls Wilder books as a child. My favorites titles were These Happy Golden Years and The Long Winter , but I enjoyed them all. Wilder used her childhood as a basis for her books, which were neither exactly biographical nor fiction. Her books made reality fun and a little more glamorous than real life. True biographies of her life, including one by William Anderson, have added to our knowledge, but the "real" Little House stories are the ones that have captivated children since 1932 when they were first being written. Ma Ingalls often showed her ingenuity when the family had little in her cooking. She could make something out of very little, especially in The Long Winter . Barbara M. Walker researched food in the Little House series and wrote The Little House Cookbook . The book is not just a collection of recipes, but a saga, replete with book quotations and description of pioneer cooking. My favorite "biography" of Laura is A Little House Sampler edited by William T. Anderson. It is not exactly a biography but is a collection of Laura and her daughter
