WILLIAMS, CHARLES TRUETT (1918-1966). Charles T. Williams, sculptor, was born in Weatherford on March 24, 1918, the son of T. L. and Lucy (Hurst) Williams. He studied at Abilene Christian College in 1940-41. He married Virginia Beaver in Abilene in 1941; they had one son. As a member of the Army Corps of Engineers Williams was stationed in Paris from 1944 to 1946. He returned to the United States fired with enthusiasm to produce art. The Williamses lived in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1946-47. Following his wife's death in 1947, Williams moved to Fort Worth to study art at Texas Christian University. He received a B.F.A. degree in 1952 followed by an M.F.A. degree three years later. He married Anita Stuart in 1952; they had a son. A versatile and prolific sculptor, Williams worked with wood, cast bronze, copper, and stone. He was one of the earliest Texas sculptors to use found objects. His interest in nature was manifested in his use of natural materials and sinuous organic shapes, such as his walnut Torso (1949), in which the curves of the abstracted figure were accentuated by the grain of the wood. Williams favored a simple aesthetic, evident in abstract totems such as

Description
Williams was born at Newtown, North Wales, in 1878 and came to New Zealand in 1902. He first took up farming at Ohaka and entered the grain and produce trade with his own firm. He became very active in local farmers' co-operative and union affairs, and in politics as a councillor for Eyre County Council.
In 1927 he was elected a member of the Kaiapoi Borough Council and became mayor in 1948. From 1935-1946 he was Labour Member of Parliament for Kaiapoi. Williams developed a keen interest in tree planting and also founded the Maesgwyn herd of pedigree Ayrshires after draining peat areas on his property.
The collection relates mainly to the period of Williams's service in Parliament. There are four outwards letters and eight inwards, including one from Walter Nash and one from John A. Lee. The collection also includes manuscript articles and reprints; notes for speeches; leaflets; election pamphlets; reports; newspaper clippings; the electoral poll, 1938; electors' list, 1959; Labour leaflets and some photographic material.

ANTHROPOGENIC SAVANNAS OF THE ALLEGHENY PLATEAU:NONPRODUCTIVE WASTELANDS OR ELEMENTS OF DIVERSITY?
Charles E. Williams Savannas dominated by a sparse canopy of black cherry ( Prunus serotina ) and (or) red maple ( Acer rubrum ) develop sporadically in stream valleys, at drainage basin heads, and on high plateaus in the Allegheny Plateau Physiographic Province of northwestern Pennsylvania and southwestern New York. Locally called orchard stands, savannas were an uncommon component of the presettlement hemlock-white pine-northern hardwood forest that dominated the region. They are primarily anthropogenic in origin having arisen following the extensive logging and subsequent hot slash fires that occurred at the turn of the century (Hough 1945; Marquis 1975; Horsley 1985; Whitney 1990). In the Allegheny National Forest alone, it is estimated that anthropogenic savannas and treeless areas currently comprise ca . 10,000 ha, ranging in size from 5 to 200 ha (Allegheny National Forest 1986). STUDY AREA Studies were conducted in a stream valley savanna along Salmon Creek, Allegheny National Forest (Forest County, Pennsylvania), as part of a larger study of riparian community structure in the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau. The site sampled was

70. Charles Williams- A Note On His Life

http://www.geocities.com/charles_wms_soc/biog.html
The following biography of Charles Williams was written by G. W. S. Hopkins, in the Dictionary of National Biography, 1941-50. It is reproduced by permission of the Oxford University Press.
WILLIAMS, Charles Walter Stansby (1886-1945), author and scholar, was born in London 20 September 1886, the only son of Richard Walter Stansby Williams, clerk, of Islington, by his wife, Mary, daughter of Thomas Wall, cabinet maker, of London. He was educated at St. Alban’s School and at University College, London. In 1908 Williams joined the Oxford University Press as a reader, and remained a member of the staff, increasingly valued and much beloved, until his death. His duties, however, as literary adviser in a publisher’s office, although carried out with enthusiasm and wisdom, occupied a relatively small place in his life. In 1912 he published his first book of verse, The Silver Stair, and, for the next thirty-three years, wrote, lectured and conversed with a tireless and brilliant energy. In that time he produced, apart from anthologies, a number of prefaces, and a rarely interrupted series of reviews, over thirty volumes of poetry, plays, literary criticism, fiction, biography, and theological argument Williams was an unswerving and devoted member of the Church of England, with a refreshing tolerance of the scepticism of others, and a firm belief in the necessity of a “doubting Thomas” in any apostolic body. More and more in his writings he devoted himself to the propagation and elaboration of two main doctrines – romantic love, and the coinherence of all human creatures. These themes formed the substance of all his later volumes, and found their fullest expression in the novels (which he described as “psychological thrillers”), in his Arthurian poems, and in many books of literary and theological exegesis. His early verse was written in traditional form, but this he later abandoned in favour of a stressed prosody built upon a framework of loosely organized internal rhymes.
