Mission San José The history of tile in San Antonio dates from the early 18th century missions. The Franciscan fathers brought with them Mexican artisans, whose tradition of making tile was introduced by the Spanish in the early 16th century. Of the five missions in San Antonio, Mission San José has been associated with tilemaking.
Mexican Arts and Crafts Employees of the Mexican Arts and Crafts workshop stand in front of its stone barn now demolished next to the San Antonio River downtown. Founded by Ethel Wilson Harris in 1930, the workshop also housed artisans with the Arts and Crafts Division of the WPA (Work Projects Administration), which was under Mrs. Harris' supervision in the late 1930s.
Ethel Wilson Harris The founder or president of three potteries, Ethel Wilson Harris (1893-1980) is credited for reviving tilemaking in San Antonio. For two years while she ran Mexican Arts and Crafts, Mrs. Harris simultaneously was president of San Jose Potteries, a factory adjacent to Mission San José. In 1940 Mrs. Harris moved her household and kiln to the mission and established a workshop named Mission Crafts within the mission compound.
Mission Crafts Angel Rendon, Lucile Carmona, and Mateo Espinosa (left to right) were the three principal artisans at Mission Crafts, a workshop located in the north wall of Mission San José until 1977.

She was in the Savoy chorus for all intervening works for which such details are available. She was also in the crowd in court for a Nellie Farren Testimonial benefit performance of Trial by Jury at Drury Lane in March 1898. Ethel (Billie) Wilson Gammon
    Livermore Falls, Maine
Ethel "Billie" Wilson Gammon is a Mother, Grandmother, Teacher, Humanitarian, and the innovative Founder of the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center. A communityminded citizen and activist, Billie's background has included teaching Sunday School, being a Girl Scout leader and a youth leader of high school students, organizing the first senior citizens' group in the community and a reading club at the North Livermore Library. Billie's most enduring endeavor has involved the Norlands, historic home of the famous Washburn family. Billie became interested in the Norlands library in 1954, and that interest became a lifelong passion to pursue her visions of the Living History Center that the Washburn farm has become.
Billie became the volunteer Executive Director of the Norlands Living History Center, negotiating the establishment of a Foundation and the transfer of ownership from the members of the Washburn family to the Foundation in 1973. With some help from other volunteers, Billie has worked intently to preserve the mansion of 23 rooms, the large barn, church, library, schoolhouse, office building, two carriage sheds and about 450 acres of land. Extensive fund-raising efforts have been essential, and Billie has devoted much time and skill to this endeavor, working to secure grants and private donations over many years. Always a teacher, Billie has never stopped developing educational programs at Norlands. Young women from Maine and other states have come as interns for periods of six months or a year, and have lived, learned, studied, and worked to earn college credits. Many girls attending the learning center have gone on to become history majors, to teach or to work in museums because of Billie's influence.

ethel (wilson) Nelson. ethel wilson and Arthur Nelson married May 29,1925 at the home of the Reverend Bebee in Nelson, Nebraska.
    http://www.wrcommunityfoundation.com/nelson.htm
Ethel (Wilson) Nelson Ethel's parent's, Fred Wilson and Edna Whiting, were married on October 11, 1899 at the Whiting farm. They lived on the farm south of Nora. On July 23, 1902, Ethel was the first born of four children, Wilford, Clyde and Nona.
Ethel's childhood memories, spending time at Grandma Whiting's, helping Pop on the farm, pony she would ride (named Jimmy) knocked her off by running under a low apple tree branch, attending Beech rural school near Nora.
Ethel's college days: Attended the School of Agriculture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She graduated in 1923. While in Lincoln she stayed with her aunt and uncle who ran a boarding house and owned a grocery store. She ironed sheets and helped out around the boarding house and also stocked shelves at the grocery store. The grocery store is on Holdrege Street across from the home (both are still standing today).
Ethel Wilson and Arthur Nelson married May 29, 1925 at the home of the Reverend Bebee in Nelson, Nebraska. Their attendants were her sister, Nona Bucknell and Art's brother, Everett Nelson.
Ethel and Art settled on a farm east of Hardy, NE. Ethel taught school in Nora for two years. Art tended to the crops and animals. Their first-born was Gerald on August 10, 1928. He was a very adventurous child. Once they found him playing with a "nice kitty" only to find that he was petting a skunk! Other adventures: he was at the top of the windmill tower; he took his wagon down the hill to see what his Dad was doing. Ethel hooked him to the clothesline to keep track of him when she was very busy.
